Per TFB:

JP told me from the time he requested his release from Baylor he knew where he wanted to go, and that was Texas. His friendship with Texas freshman Zach Shackelford helped seal the deal in this one.

It seems to me that the incoming freshman linemen are a HUGE part of the possibility for success (whatever minimum standard exists at this point) in the upcoming season. If they can plug in and get on with their upside right away then it could all come together sooner than later.

I'm already assuming that the QB situation will be much stabilized with Buechele... just keep him on his feet OL!

2016 DT signee Marcel Southall from Duncanville has officially taken care of all his entrance requirements. He should arrive on campus for the Summer II session and be fully ready to roll for camp in August.

In other qualification news, those in the know are starting to get more optimistic that Manor LB/WDE Erick Fowler will get his summer school business successfully handled and be eligible to join the team come August. Don't take that to the bank just yet, but it's encouraging to hear things trending in the right direction there.

Fowler would be an immediate lift for the Longhorns' ability to get four-man pressure and could force his way into the Naashon Hughes/Breckyn Hager conversation at WDE in short order if he makes it to the 40.

An offering for understanding and patience in this good man who is coaching the University of Texas football team...

Every year I buy the Lindey's pro-football magazine. It serves as my bible during the season. It has great capsule information on every player, every position unit and the draft picks. Included in every issue is a section hi-lighting the top 10-15 players in each position group (QB, Running Back, Fullback, Guards, Tackles etc) that will most likely be eligible for next years draft. A quick review revealed that not one player from the University of Texas was listed in any of the position groups. I think you may know where I'm going with this. The players who would have been considered for this section were not recruited by Coach Strong.

That is my offering....

No conclusion, just an observation.

folks seem to think they are looking for someone who is willing to offer his sister a track scholarship as briles had worked out with Baylor. It was said Aggy had done so but the visit never really happened but time will tell has to sign papers by the 11th

I wonder who recruited those guys. :smile1: We all know Mack burned out and fell asleep at the wheel, but let's not act like the man was some sap we finally canned in favor of a real coach with actual recruiting skills.

Nice list; not on point. The part where you say that Mack burned out is the point. I am discussing the hand Charlie was dealt. The rest of that is a defense of Mack that was unnecessary because I'm talking about current events. The analysis of pro-ready players (for next years draft) on the roster (from Mack's recruiting classes) resulted in conclusion that there are none. That is the point. That should be taken into consideration when you conduct an analysis of Charlie.

Mack is gone for very real reasons. We are seeing those reasons now.

The narrative of burned out Mack being successfully salvaged by savior Charlie has much further to go before factual.

While it's clear Mack fell off and left CS a deficit. It's also undeniable Mack finished 8-5 and in a bowl game with relatively similar players to the hand CS was dealt. So far he hasn't sniffed either a winning season or bowl game like the team he inherited.

What Strong is shaping in regards to talent is impressive without question. However, only solid winning results in 2016 will show if capable of real success at this higher level. I believe so, I sure hope so, but it's time to prove it on the field where it counts.

One thing that's factual is Mack Daddy had 8+ wins in 15 of 16 seasons at the helm. :smile1: :deadhorse:

My point is that that not that Charlie is a savior nor that he has salvaged the program. You keep missing the point. It is an independent assessment of the roster. It is a measure of the hole he's climbing out of.

I don't know why coaches that were successful (Watson, Wickline) in the past failed here. But they did and I understand why Charlie is accountable for that. But there wasn't a Division 1 quarterback on this roster when Charlie arrived. There were accountability issues from some players that Charlie handled swiftly (for which he was questioned over by some fans because of the effect on the talent pool) that now look like wise moves given the climate today due to Baylor's looking the other way for the transgressions of the players. It was a deep hole.

I'm not sure what battle you're fighting here but I'm over there on another battlefield.

Watson has never been "successful" on the Power 5 level. Wickline is an average at best OL coach who does not recruit.

I seem to recall quite a bit of high fiving around here when Wickline was hired... as for Watson I guess that is a matter of degree. Louisville had a pretty good program; I don't know that anyone would have expected Strong to not bring him but maybe I don't have the inside story. Did Strong try to hire someone else and ended up bringing Watson (settling on him)?

The difference between the the 2

http://www.hornfans.com/threads/an-nfl-olineman-on-uts-oline-wickline.99816/

Dan Neil quotes about Wickline below (posted on this website 9/9/15):

"Give me 5 offensive lineman who know their job and give great effort, and we can go win a few games. Give me 5 who can do these two things with talent, and we can go win a championship.

After watching the first series, I can tell you that this offensive line is night and day better than last year. Why? Because of what I saw from Connor Williams' technique. If that's what Joe Wickline is teaching, then I come away from the Notre Dame game convinced Joe Wickline is a top offensive line coach.

I can see what he wants these guys to do, and he finally has a guy in Williams who can actually do it.

Last year, Texas was not athletically gifted enough on the OL to execute the scheme Wickline wants.

What he wants are athletic guys who can move - and not slow guys who are fat. He inherited a program that had slow, fat guys.

When I was in Denver, we were the smallest line in the league. Our three inside guys (two guards and center) averaged 285. Yet somehow, we led the league in rushing every year and blocked for a 2,000 rusher (Terrell Davis).

We did this by understanding the scheme and being quick. This line will get there. And Wickline is the kind of coach to get them there."

It's also undeniable Mack finished 8-5 and in a bowl game with relatively similar players to the hand CS was dealt.

That's only true until you look at the key areas - Mack had better talent (or at least better QB aptitude) at QB and also had some residual OL and DL talent that was superior to what CS has had.

Just to reset the original point. A reputable pro football magazine lists not one current Longhorn who are Juniors or seniors in the top 15-20 players by position group.

Everything else is smoke. Posting Mack's overall record or the number of players he sent to the NFL is not a rebuttal. This is a comment about the upper-class talent. Inherited talent.

If the new HC hadn't run the upper level talent out of town, you might have a point.
But you don't. Also, where is the FG kicker Strong recruited that will be added to this list next year? Or defensive tackles that Strong recruited that will be added to this list next year?
Don't say Poona Ford.
I have a problem finding them on the roster.

I do have a point. I'm not sure why you guys can't see it. Briles was fired because he didn't run "talent" out of town. I'm happy Strong did it. He looks wise and "strong" for doing it. I'm really surprised you went there on that one.

Those Dan Neil comments received over 13 likes... that's quite a few... guess that doesn't matter now. Strong is now being blamed for Wickline. That's how it works I guess.

My short version of the difference between Briles and Strong;

Briles - keep the talent onboard at all costs.

Strong - break a rule of the code of conduct, you're gone.
