May/June/JULY Football

If you looked at the statistical trend....the last two years would make the trend line move negatively. No?

Devin Duvernay – Duvernay wrapped up visits to Austin and Fort Worth in the last week, and while he enjoyed his time at both places, we are sticking with the sources we’ve had since the very beginning. It is our belief that Texas will come out on top for the dynamic receiver when he makes a decision this week. Texas was able to sell Duvernay on a role in the new offense that no one else could fill, and the players on campus were able to do their part in recruiting the dynamic speedster. To be clear I’m not saying this is over, but sources on all sides indicate that Texas is in a great position here. If and when Devin’s brother Donovan receives his release from Baylor, we expect him to have a spot in Austin.

Parrish Cobb – We reported a couple of weeks ago that things with Cobb were turning in the right direction for Texas. After previously zeroing in on Oklahoma, I was told by sources that a couple of Texas freshmen put in a ton of work on Cobb to get him to consider Texas. Once the LOI fiasco is resolved, we expect Texas to land Cobb.

Patrick Hudson – Now for the bad news. We were told a couple of weeks ago that Hudson was starting to turn towards enrolling at Baylor for the second summer session. In talking to some people this week, we learned that the thought is picking up steam. Hudson might have been a victim of some scare tactics by the Waco staff, because the previous indications we received from his family stated that Hudson had no plans to enroll at Baylor. We are still waiting for official word on the LOI resolution, but it looks like Baylor could have saved themselves here.

For what it's worth (which ain't much these days), I think Hudson thinks he's stuck. What I mean is that two days before NSD, he twitted, "My prayers have been answered, and I know where I want to spend the next four years of my life."

JMO, but Hudson, being a thoughtful, honest young man (from what I've "heard"), may feel that choosing another school would be dishonoring to God since he believed God had answered his prayers. That's a legitmate consideration for any Christian and the right decision could be to stay the course. However, there are often other Godly plans in situational changes.

I venture to say that most Christians have faced a similar circumstance a time or two in their lives; and each has had to struggle with what God really intended for them. Anyway, JMO on what may be happening in this difficult time.

I think Foreman and Joe have been improving so we are not depleted at the slot, but from what I understand, Devin has absolute elite speed.

The Gilbert offense utilizes a lot of run-pass options and WR screens. Having elite speed will hopefully allow us to turn short check down passes into big gains.

Now watching his Hudl film, I must say his wheels are good but his vision is great. Guy sets up his own blocks, makes good open field moves, and sees cutback angles like a high level running back.

Get him the ball with a little space and he can make something of it. I like what I am seeing. Especially with some time this summer to learn the playbook and get in some extra conditioning.

A quote concerning our newest recruit, WR Devin Duvernay:

With apologies to Derrick Dockery, this is the most important set of DD's to arrive on the 40 Acres since Jayne Mansfield. – BC's nobis60

[Devin] Duvernay visited Texas on June 11. In addition to the normal sight-seeing on a visit, Duvernay sat down with the Texas staff to review the Orange and White game, with the staff selling him on the team's need for a difference-maker in the slot and highlighting every throw made by freshman Shane Buechele. Current players Brandon Jones, Jeffrey McCulloch, Charles Omenihu, and DeShon Elliott have also been making their own pitch to Duvernay, including letting him know that head coach Charlie Strong's job is safe....

However, it seems that the pitch from Strong, Gilbert, Buechele, and the rest of the Longhorns was enough to land a commitment from Duvernay that was completely impossible to foresee back on National Signing Day.

[BON article]

Players puttin' in the work! Reports have been that seniors are accepting freshmen, team chemistry is excelling, and leadership is coming from all four classes. These guys want to see real Longhorns Football real fast.

BTW, with the addition of Duvernay, we stand at 84 schollies – assuming Erick Fowler and Marcel Southall are able to enroll as planned.

Have been gathering a little behind the scenes information on how the summer is going for the team. Here are a few notable notes…

I was told the freshmen defensive linemen are not acting like freshmen. In workouts they are competing with the older guys…they’re jumping to the front of the line. “Guys like Elliott are not here to sit the bench their freshmen year…its pretty clear they are here to play.”

Buechele is the best QB. Was told Swoopes is probably third after Heard in terms of how he performs in 7 on 7. Was also told Swoopes is still holding on to the ball…”even in 1 on 1s he holds on to the ball”. Source also added, “In 7 on 7 a wide receiver will be open but he (Swoopes) just keeps patting the ball until the DB catches up to the receiver”.

Regarding the QB's, if true then I think this is good. Here's why: Swoopes is 3rd - he can focus on the 18 wheeler. Heard is 2nd - better him than Swoopes since Heard has more years of eligibility left. Boo is 1st - provides extra competition at position plus extra body in case someone gets hurt.

E$PN asked and answered its own question: "Who are the other most important players in the Big 12?"

For Texas they chose The Predator.

"There might not be a more dynamic defender in the Big 12 than Jefferson, a sophomore who already has become the face and vocal leader of the Texas defense."

2016 is the Year Of The Steer at Texas – the 'Horns added over 2700 pounds of beef with nine new trench recruits. Compare this nearly 1½ tons with 2015's two 300 pounders and we're looking at a barbecue blowout.

As most know, Baylor fully released signees OL Patrick Hudson, RB Kameron Martin, OT JP Urquidez, CB Parrish Cobb, and DB Donovan Duvernay.

JP Urquidez – Urquidez said Texas was his “dream school” multiple times early in his recruitment. I haven’t heard where he will likely end up as the family is keeping things quiet until they officially get the papers. I was told “he knows where he wants to go” by a source close to Urquidez. If the Texas staff is interested, I believe they have a really good shot in this one.

Kameron Martin – After having some conversations with Martin, he is very interested in Texas right now. I would say Texas is the favorite if the Texas staff is willing to take him. The other school I’ve heard is Houston. They just landed former Baylor WR and Martin’s close friend Tren’Davion Dickson.

Donovan Duvernay – If Duvernay doesn’t sign with Texas I will be absolutely shocked. As you all know his brother Devin is headed to Texas.

Parrish Cobb – I’ve spoken to a few folks regarding the situation with Cobb including both his mother and father. In terms of a decision timeline Cobb’s father tells me, “Maybe next week.” Cobb’s mother said, “We’re confident by next week the news (of his decision) will be out.”

I am told the top three schools are Oklahoma, TCU and Texas. I’ve been told by sources on all three sides that they want Cobb. However, my source on the Texas side tells me they certainly want him but it will also be a bit of a first come first serve situation just due to the numbers. In other words Texas doesn’t have the scholarship numbers to take all of the released Baylor recruits.

Patrick Hudson – I’m told by a source close to Hudson that he will most likely announce his decision in early July.

Everything I’ve heard from folks around Hudson and his family is that Patrick wants to go to Texas. However, there is a bit of a snag. I’m told that both Texas A&M and Baylor are willing to offer Hudson’s sister a track scholarship. This is something that, at this point, Texas is not willing to do.

I do not know to what degree this will impact Patrick’s decision but I am told that if it does it will be more so due to family pressure.

Strong Staffing

Probably the single biggest problem for the Charlie Strong era at Texas has been a lack of offensive identity to help guide the development and deployment of the team’s talent in a unified direction. Besides the lack of a strong passing QB to make things easy, a bigger issue has been a lack of staff unity and vision from the top.

Strong wanted a physical offense that could control tempo, protect the defense, and wear teams down. In pursuing that goal he ended up assembling a staff in 2014 with two different OCs that had two different visions for how to achieve that goal (Shawn Watson and Joe Wickline), then in 2015 tried to solve that problem by adding two additional and also uniquely different coaches in Jay Norvell and Jeff Traylor.

Only one of those coaches survived the purge initiated by Charlie in the wake of 5-7, Traylor, who’s background is as TX HS coach, and Strong followed up the purge by filling out the staff with more Texans with the goal of finally uniting the offensive meeting room behind a singular vision.

Sterlin Gilbert – OC / QBs
The most important hire was of course, Sterlin Gilbert, who now wields the authority over the direction of the Texas offense. His chosen direction for the offense is the veer and shoot.

Matt Mattox – OL / RGC
Landing Mattox was key in signing Gilbert as he’s essential to helping him install a totally new and unique system at Texas with his phenomenal background both in this particular system and as a teacher in general.

Anthony Johnson – RBs
Because of Johnson’s background with the Texas recruiting scene and his experience teaching a variety of power and zone-option schemes he should be a natural fit in Gilbert’s offense.

Charlie Williams – WRs
It’ll be interesting to see how well he adapts to the life of a full-time recruiter as well as adjusting his normal teaching regimen to the needs of Gilbert’s offense. Texas got a great coach here but the fit is definitely curious.

Clay Jennings – DBs
Jennings is a strong fit at Texas both for his expertise in developing smart, physical, well-rounded DBs as well as his long-standing recruiting connections across the all-important DFW region that supplies so much of the state’s talent.

then in 2015 tried to solve that problem by adding two additional and also uniquely different coaches in Jay Norvell and Jeff Traylor.

I think this is misleading.
This was a stop gap measure when it became apparent that Watson couldn't get the job done.
These were actions taken on the fly.
Great if they worked out, but at this point I think Strong knew he would be searching for a new OC at the end of the season.

After receiving his release from Bailor, RB Kameron Martin has eliminated the 'Horns from consideration.

Reports are reportedly untrue that Martin felt shame for snubbing Texas then getting a massive BU tatoo on his arm.

He is currently deciding between TCU and Auburn.

In 1509, a dispensation from Pope Julius II was given in order to allow King Henry VIII to marry his brother's widow, Catherine of Aragon.

Perhaps a dispensation from the Poops of NCAA will be given to allow Coach Strong to marry more recruits into the family than allowed.

Something needs to happen soon – and I hope that it's NOT losing Erick Fowler and Marcel Southall.
