Mav$ - Spurs

Not necessarily, but he should no longer be considered untouchable. The Mavs could possibly keep Dirk and, if the soft salary cap allows, add players who are consistently willing to drive to the basket (as opposed to settling for jumpers), play good defense, and do all of the other things that we see championship caliber teams do consistently. I'm not sure they can do all of that while Dirk is still in his prime. If they can't for fiscal reasons or those players simply aren't available (via trade, draft, or free agency), then moving Dirk may be the only way to start changing the culture of the team. I'd prefer to keep Dirk, but the Mavs may simply be running out of time and options.

It's funny how everyone expects the 7 footer to do all the driving to the basket part. Dirk actually does a pretty good job getting to the line. He'll also take it hard to the basket. Maybe not as much as Mavs fans would like, but come on.
The real problem is his defense. His offense is just fine.

The Mavs need a center with a post game (something Damp just sucks at). Actually let me be more specific. Damp sucks at pretty much everything. They also desperately need a guard who can penetrate. Terry is a jump shooter only and Kidd is too old to effectively penetrate. Think about this. How many times does Dirk have a guard penetrate and dish back to him for a jumper? Like almost never. How about high/low were Dirk feeds the post and the post player has enough game to draw a double team and then kick it back out to him. Opps, that never happens either. Dirk has to create pretty much all his own shots either from pick and roll, post up, or drives. He's the only player on the team that demands a double team or he's going for 30+. Personally I think he's amazing considering what is asked of him. Trade him and the Mavs have nothing. I mean they don't win 40 games much less 50. If you trade Dirk, might as well say goodbye to Kidd and count on the lottery the next 2-3 years.

Can you imagine if Dirk got to play with Parker? Or how about Gasol or a post with some inside game? Nash could penetrate and score, but then the Mavs had too many defensive liabilities with both Dirk and Nash on the same team. Dirk is no Tim Duncan because he is no where near the defensive player Duncan is. But to question his offense??? Glad you don't do my performance evaluations.

This has been a great series. I hope tonight is not a blow out for the Spurs. Would love to see it go 7. Why the Mavs didn't let Haywood play more over Damp eariler in the Series is still a huge mystery. I would rather watch Haywood miss FT's than Damp.

Wadster, my complaints about the Mavs are not with Dirk--I love what he brings to the table. I also love having Kidd on my team (even at the ripe old age of 37). My problem is with the supporting cast that is constantly put around Dirk. I think adding Butler & Haywood to this team goes along way to addressing the needs previously discussed on this thread. In my opinion, this year's cast is the best team the Mavs have assembled since their big run in the 80's. All that being said, this team still keeps falling back into bad habits--resorting to fade-aways when they should be driving to the basket, poor shot selection, defensive lapses, etc. -- at the most inopportune times. A team with this many veteran players should not be doing any of those things as often as this team does. Further, for some reason, Dampier and Barea continue to get way too much playing time; Marion (though playing good defense) appears to have lost his ability to score; for every good game Jet has, he offsets it with several bad ones; Beaubois is a project; Najera brings a physical component, but that's about it; and the rest of the team are "just guys".

Perhaps the Mavs' problems stem from a coaching issue, but we're seeing the same problems under Carlisle that we saw with Nellie & Avery. I like what Carlisle brings to the organization, which leads me to believe that the on-court personnel is the problem. Time is no longer an ally to the Mavs. So, unless financial limitations keep them from giving Dirk the support he needs (which is my preference), I think it's time to move Dirk to a team that will give him a better chance to win a championship and the team can start the re-building process.

I hope the Mavs win this series, make a deep run in the playoffs, and prove me wrong. If they do, I'll gladly eat crow. However, I have my doubts--and I think they are well-founded.

I'm not suggesting that the Mavs give Dirk away. That statement was predicated on the preceding clause. My point was that IF the Mavs did not have the financial flexibility to surround Dirk with pieces that make the team better and IF the Mavs went the route of moving Dirk (and those are big, qualified "IF's"), my expectation would certainly be for the Mavs to get value in return for Dirk, whether in the form of a top current player or high draft picks.

Im a Spurs fan but if I was a Mav fan I would be furious that Beoubois (sp.) got so little playing time throughout the series. He could have potentially been the difference in some of the closer games. Carlisle has to answer for that to his fan base

I've been watching Spurs playoff series for over 30 years, and without a doubt this was one of the toughest and best series I've ever seen them involved in. I know that doesn't take away the bitter taste from Mavs fans on the loss, but it was truly one for the history books, IMO.

Now if only the rest of the country (and the NBA) would recognize that this is, bar none, the best rivalry in pro basketball.

I hope the Spurs, through the rest of the playoffs, can make even Mavs fans proud of their Texas brothers.

Go Spurs Go

Coming from a spurs fan, I have alot more hate for the Lakers, but Spurs v Mavs is still the best rivalry in basketball. It wouldve really helped if the Mavs would have beaten the Heat though, because that Western Conference finals was the best series i can remember watching. But i saw a stat on first take this morning that blew me away.

There have only been 3 points in NBA history where a team has had 50+ wins for 10 years or more in a row, and in every instance the team on this streak has achieved multiple championships.....except for the mavs from 2000-2010.
