Mav$ - Spurs

No threads on Mavs - Spurs? Did someone claim a moratorium on this?

I normally wouldn't question Pop, but NO doubling of Dirk? Surely they will change that up some. The Hack-a-Damp seemed to slow down Dirk's 3rd qtr run somewhat. Not sure why Damp is back to starting over Haywood. Probably the same reason Hill starts over Parker but gets half the minutes. And Beaubois gets no minutes? Guess Carlyle has more confidence in JJ Berea not screwing up or jacking wild shots. The Spurs came out red hot shooting the ball. I didn't realize they were like the 4th best 3 pt shooting team in the league. I think this series goes 7.

I think it's clear the Mavs have too much for the Spurs. They have so much firepower, and the Spurs have no way of making Dirk work hard on either end of the court. Just a tough matchup for the Spurs. Hate to say it, but I think this thing gets done in about 5 games.

Dirk is just a nightmare match-up for the Spurs. They can throw McDyess or Bonner on him. Uh, that's not going to get it done. Dirk will average 35ppg in his sleep if that's how they match-up the rest of the way.

The Mavs held a nice cushion throughout the second half and that was with Terry throwing up a goose-egg until the 4th. If he plays just normal, Mavs win by close to 20 last night.

Duncan, Manu and Parker can play better, but having said that, all 3 of them scored right around 20pts. each. The problem is the role players cannot consistently give them what the Mavs role players give them.

Mavs were giving up plenty of looks, but Spurs just didn't convert. Spurs are also in a bit of a pickle with their 2 PG's still a little banged up.

There's no doubt that Dallas is the better team this year, but I don't believe the match ups are that big problem for San Antonio in this series. Their main problem is that they have been inconsistent all season and injuries have played a part in that. I still believe the Spurs can make this a series, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Last year it seemed like teams frustrated Dirk the most when the doubled him immediately when he got the ball. He isn't quick enough to dribble through the trap and he would get confused on where the open man was. The addition of Marion and Butler has provided more offensive punch than they had last year. When Kidd is knocking down 3's, they are very tough to beat.

This series is all about rebounding. The spurs get no second chance points while the mavs do. The spurs were outrebounded in game 1 and unless that changes, they won't make this series competitive. The only other thing that can save them is if Parker were to return to his "NBA finals MVP" form but we all know that ain't happening....

Spurs are never going to out rebound the Mavs. They are afraid of the fast break, so they only keep 1 or 2 in for the rebound.

spurs are 1-4 vs Mavs this year.
Why would that pattern make a complete reversal now???
Mavs are p[laying their best ball right now.
Dirk has hit 86 consecutive freethrows!!!
That's right, I said 86. I can't believe the national guys aren't even referencing that fact.

Mavs in 5.

One thing in the Mavs favor is that if they get past the Spurs, they probably won't face another team with a super quick point guard. Fisher, Nash and Kidd together are 109 (if my addition in my head was right) and that's gotta be some kind of record.

Picking up Haywood and Butler was huge for the Mavs, made them possibly best team in the West? Spurs did not do enough to improve their team IMO.

BTW, of course I'm aware that the Hornfans jinx will now doom Dirk at the freethrow line. But hey, it's gotta end sometime, & 86 was plenty.
I just wanted to give him some props while the streak was still intact.

Mavs get owned in this one. Dirk gets 2 quick fouls and never really gets going and the Spurs shoot lights out. Bad combination for the Mavs makes an easy win for the Spurs.

Announcers crack me up. One game the Spurs have no chance. The next game, the Mavs have no one but Dirk in a half court game. Truth is always somewhere in the middle.

The win by Spurs last night only means that we're going to have a competitive series. I don't think it will be the last time in this series the Spurs have to win a game on the Mavs court. The Mavs will win a game in San Antonio, I think.

The Mavs pick and roll D was terrible last night, Dirk in particular. The guy can score, but he is a defensive liability. And why does Damp start over Haywood? Marion disappeared last night on offense. He needs to score more than 6 pts if the Mavs have any chance. And I still think Beaubois needs to play. The guy has serious ups and speed.

Spurs strategy of not doubling Dirk worked. Their D was rotating very well. Mavs had makeable shots - if they shoot 37% they won't beat Butler.
