Matt Wells fired from Tech...

I think the "Sonny" who is the hot name is Sonny Dykes at SMU- son of Tech legend Spike Dykes... But he could come over and keep Cumbie and it would be the Sonny and Sonny show... Where is Cher?

Been downhill since the Spike, don’t you think? That’s the profile that works for the school on the Plains.

I find the timing (but not the decision) interestingly. Leads me to believe that they want to have a jump on their next HC, and they probably have the guy in mind. Perhaps it is Cumbie.

If Cumbie is effective over the remaining games, he might be the guy. Clearly both OU and OSU are beatable. But talk about a challenging remaining schedule: OU, ISU, OSU, Baylor. At least ISU and OSU are in Lubbock.

The great downside for Sonny, is that he would have to win and win much more than his Dad, just to be considered Spike's equal in the Raider Nation. Spike is so beloved, that Sonny would have impossibly big shoes to fill. If he were to to win big, he would then become a hot coaching commodity and be offered P5 jobs at three times the salary that Tech could ever pay him. If he stays, he is fool. If he bolts, he is an interloper who has sullied the Dyke's name and Legacy on the Plains.

Chin,

Mike Leach sends his warmest regards.
My point had more to do with personal profile “fit”. Spike was one of their’s and West Texas people are hard on outsiders. Yet they did fire Spike.

Spike and Leach had something in common….humor. Mike with his weird dry delivery and Spike could nail a joke. He always brought the house down at the old SWC kickoff luncheons. I loved to hear the guy talk and tell a story. One of my favorites of old.

Tech fans are perfectly delusional. I heard they think Lame Kitten would leave Ole Miss to coach Tech. He is such a pompous *** there is no way he'd go to Lubbock to coach. He craves attention to the highest degree and Lubbock just can't give that.

Cumbie's offense at Tech is meh.

There is no short passing run game which was the strength of Leach's offense. Spread em out wide, throw short gadget passes and gash the secondary.

He is no Mike Leach. If there was ever a curse for firing a HC, the Red Raiders earned it by firing Leach when he was in his prime. Idiots.

This. I have friends & family in Lbk that would have killed for Leach when he beat Texas...wouldn't pee on him if he were on fire today. He was the best coach (fb) they ever had & haven't done squat since. They are delusional about Lubbock's attraction to 18 y.o.'s. I think Traylor is the only person who might be able to do that (considering his relationships with Texas h.s. coaches). I hope they don't get Traylor for a couple of reasons (I live 7 minutes from UTSA & both my son's graduated from there).

I lived in Lubbock for three years and they are not delusional about the place re recruiting. Almost all of them say their biggest problem is recruiting. The place makes a smelly first opinion on outsiders. But it grows on you. I didn’t want to leave.
They need somebody like Spike who can spot unnoticed talent and get help from coaches.
Steve Sloan did real well in his few years there because Kalen had recruited well and Parcells was his defensive coordinator

Traylor would be perfect but I think he already has a plum

Will the Big XII even stay P5?

The original Big 12 was always a short term answer to a long term problem; four big, rich, big following, programs, (UT, OU, NU, & aggy) and the original Irate 8 (schools with no TV sets and 50,000 seat stadiums that they can't fill up). The 4 flagship schools found their new homes in the SEC and B1G, while the Irate 8 2.0 is demanding to know from the Commissioner where their new welfare checks are going to come from.

And they truly believe that adding city/commuter schools, the Mormon's and a school with 72,000 students (but only 400 actual alumni), spread over three time zones is the answer.

They will call it P5, just like they call the PAC-12 P5. You can call a pig, a duck. But at the end of the day, it is still a pig.
