I wanted to delay the creation of this thread until the Tevez transfer was completed and now that West Sham and MSI have finalized an out of court settlement that was approved by the PL, it appears that Carlitos will be making the move to the Theatre of Dreams.

Acquisitions:

Carlos Tevez

IMO Tevez and Rooney are two of the top five support strikers in world football. Both can play up front or in a more withdrawn role on the wings. As briefly mentioned in another thread, our forwards last year were:

1. Rooney
2. Saha – made of glass but class when healthy
3. Solskaer – a legend and still a lethal finisher but past it
4. Larsson – helped when here but not a long term solution
5. Smith – tenacious player but doesn’t fit in the new United system

The introduction of another world class forward in Tevez will significantly ease the burden on Rooney and make Saha a luxury. We are basically replacing Larsson/Smith with Tevez, which will immeasurably improve our attack. Tevez is also a great free kick taker which was something we lacked last year when Ronaldo became erratic over the last half of the season.

Owen Hargreaves

United did not possess a true DM last season. Carrick was forced to take on more defensive responsibilities than he would like. The addition of Hargreaves gives United high quality options at all of the CM positions for the first time in years: Scholes – AM; Hargreaves – DM; Carrick – DLP. Fletcher can now return to more of a utility role, in which he can move into need areas as required. Hargreaves can also fill in more than adequately at either FB position and is a great free kick taker. The only concern with Hargy is that he is injury prone. Otherwise, he will dramatically enhance United’s flexibility and will prove exceptionally valuable in Europe and against Top-4 PL sides.

Nani

Last season United’s lack of depth at CM would often lead SAF to move Giggs inside, which would create a hole on the wing that we tried to fill with Richardson or would create another hole that would require a rearrangement of our lineup. We really needed another high quality winger to provide depth behind the aging Giggs for the near term and ultimately replace him after he retires. Nani looked outstanding on the Asian tour and I expect him to receive quite a bit of PT this season, more than most prognosticators expect. The addition of Nani gives United SIX legitimate options to play in their three forward positions (Nani, Giggs, Tevez, Ronaldo, Saha, and Rooney).

Anderson

Anderson is one for the future IMO. SAF views him as a long term replacement for Scholes but I expect him to begin his career getting occasional PT on the wings until he adjusts to the English game. There is not a lot of PT available on this squad unless United are hit with several issues on the front line. As this is a 2007-2008 preview, I don’t think much more needs to be said about him.

Departures:

Smith

Smudger did not fit into United’s evolving style of play. I admire the guy’s perseverance and attitude but he just isn’t good enough.

Rossi

Most United fans were furious that we sold Rossi as he was a product of the reserves and United has a great tradition of building through its reserves. However, the acquisition of Tevez was the writing on the wall. Rossi wants to start now and that opportunity was not available to him at United. Good luck to him as we have a first option to repurchase him.

Richardson

A target of abuse for United fans. We got a great price for him and his departure is great for him and United.

Conclusions

United’s transfer dealings provide SAF with significantly more depth and flexibility. Make no mistake, United is moving towards an unconventional three-pronged attack in which the three forwards will be free to switch positions and the direction of the attack at will. With world class passers like Carrick and Scholes feeding balls into the 3-headed monster, defenses will have no idea where United are coming from and where they are going next. I have no doubt that United will have the most dynamic attack in the league and play the most sophisticated football.

What is also interesting is that United now also possesses the personnel to play a continental 4-5-1 on the road in CL games with far more success.

United’s bench is also going to be vastly improved this season and SAF will have legitimate choices to insert late in tight matches who can win the match.

Should be a great season.

Thanks for the input Mic.

The difference b/w the traditional 3 forward system you describe and the one that United will employ is in the movement.

Sheva and Drogba are target forwards who play the more traditional number 9 role.

Of the United "Big 6" only Saha is a number 9. When he is in the lineup, I agree that we will be playing the more traditional 4-3-3.

However when he is not on the field, United' attacking players will have no defined position or role. They can go where they deem appropriate. As a result, the attack will be more unpredictable than under the 4-3-3 systems traditionally utilized in Engloish football.

Another thing to note is that both Tevez and Rooney have incredibly high footballing IQs. They both have incredible off the ball movement, which makes them perfect for our 4-3-3. Fergie was apparently foaming at the mouth in delight during Tevez' first training session on Friday. All signs indicate that Tevez will be playing against Reading with Rooney and Ronaldo a week from Sunday.

I expect to see those three up front with Giggs withdrawn behind them and Carrick and Hargy on front of the back 4.

The PL is taking their sweet time to register Tevez as a United player. As a result he will likely be unavailable for this weekend's contest.

GAME 1

Reading @ Old Trafford

I am fairly certain VDS, Brown, Rio, Vidic, Evra, Carrick, Scholes, Ronaldo, Giggs and Rooney will start. The question is whether Nani or Hargreaves start. I think Nani will likely start on one wing with Ronaldo on the other. Giggs will play behind Rooney with Scholes and Carrick in the center of midfield.

Brilliant Goal by Nani Yesterday

I expect a comfortable two goal win for the Red Devils. 3-1 or 2-0. Reading doesn't have the speed to keep up with a fresh United.

Nani can really thump the ball on his shots. It will only be a few weeks before he overtakes Giggs at LW. Nani and Ronaldo on the wings is just too much.

Giggs has also had a stellar preseason and is the de facto captain. He won't lose his starting place, although Nani will get plenty of time as both a starter and off the bench to provide Giggs and Ronaldo with more rest than they received last year.

Giggs chip @ Dunfermline

The Tevez deal is complete and he is now officially a RED DEVIL!!!!!

Also, Saha and Ole were back in full training this week and SAF indicated that Hargreaves, Nani and Anderson will all be in the squad (i.e., starters or on the bench) for the Reading game. Neville is the only guy in the first team with an injury. Let's hope that lasts!!
I would like to see Tevez on the bench but he is unlikely to be there although he has trained with the club for the past week.

GB: you alive mate? Can't believe you don't have something to say about that draw or Rooney's foot.

Look on the bright side: one or both of Liverpool and Chelski WILL drop points this weekend.

I just got back into town after closing a deal in Chicago that had begun to overtake my life.

I was able to watch the ManU match before my flight but was not in a position to provide any reaction until now.

The Rooney loss is huge particularly since Saha and Ole are not fit. If Saha can return soon, I think we can weather the storm but we are one more key injury away from trouble.

The game itself was a joke. Reading played with 10 behind the ball the entire game. Obviously, the Big 4 have to cope with this approach almost every home game but I think we can put to rest the "adventerous Reading" of last season. Coppell recognizes that they have not improved during the offseason like many of the teams below him in the table. In fact they are actually worse after losing their best player in Sidwell. They were completely unable to string any passes together and I think they could be in for a relegation fight. Another top half finish is completely unrealistic.

We have to get a full 3 from a tough away match against Pompey on Wednesday or we will be in a big hole already in the league.

As for the game:

VDS: N/A - nothing to do
Brown: 5 - We miss Neville at RB
Rio: 7 - never troubled
Vidic: 7 - won everything in the air
Silvestre: 5 - solid backup LB but did little going forward
Carrick: 8 - best player on the pitch
Scholes: 4 - one of his worst performances
Giggs: 6 - had some nice touches and runs
Ronaldo: 7 - nice performance despite being double and triple teamed
Rooney: 6 - dangerous before injured

Nani and Fletcher were useless.

O'Shea actually contributed.

Amazing that we didn't score despite the 75% possession but that is football. All of the Big 4 had some difficulty in the first game although only United failed to grab the 3 points.

I agree on Carrick. That was easily the best I've ever seen him look (never thought much of him before).

BTW, if you have a chance to catch the FanZone broadcast of the match, it was epic. The Reading fan was simply pissing himself with glee, while the Manc was absolutely frantic and wanting to sack the whole side. Very entertaining,

Portsmouth-ManU on right now....

SPOILERS:

Pompey with the second-half equalizer after Scholes hits a wonderful strike. ManU's knocking on the door but David James has been huge this game.

Pompey made some great signings this summer and should finish near 5th and make a shout for a top 4 spot.

James is the 2nd best GK in the EPL when he's on his game. Or the 2nd worst when not.

Ronaldo's red was absolute ********. Could very well get rescinded. Compare what he did to what Gerrard did in the preseason Holland tournament.

Tough start to the season. Really reminds me of Arse last year. Total domination but can't get a break against GKs playing out of their mind.

Last time United failed to pick up a win in their first two league matches: 1998-1999. Hopefully we will have more success this year than in that abysmal season.

Manchester City is a huge, huge game this weekend.

The only bright side is we watched the match at the new Irish Pub at the Louisiana Boardwalk. Finally, a proper place to watch matches around here.

As crappy as the PK call was against Liverpool, that was a good draw at Anfield today from a Utd perspective. And it's always nice to see Arse come away without full points, and get their butts kicked in the process. Good for Rovers.

That said, it ain't right when United's only consolation is to find bright spots in how OTHER games turned out. 1 goal in 3 games. ugh!

Yep. A draw was prob the silver lining of the week for Man U.

What seems to be the problem? IMO, I don't know why Man U never went after a #9 instead of a #10-type guy. You have enough creativity.

Hell, Roy Makaay who is now at Feyenoord would have been a good signing.
