I've never filed (in Texas), so I can't help you, but...

DO IT ASAP!!

You really should have filed before taking a week off. There is usually a time gap between when you file and when they start paying. (Like they will let you sweat for about a week or two and not count those weeks to see if you get another job. It's all official and it isn't like they are being lazy, they just have a standard waiting period before the payments kick in.)

People in Freelance areas like the entertainment industry are filing all the time in LA.

Like the poster above said, you need to do it right now because they are very slow.

Fliling for unemployment is confusing and I think they do it on purpose to discourage more people from using it..

Nowadays I think you can do it all online.

Nothing wrong with taking unemployment. your old employers paid into the system for you, so you get your benefit.

A few points:
- It's good that you are filing now. They won't start paying until you've finished with severance anyway.
- You're required to attend a job counseling session (or two). Don't miss them or they will cut off your benefits or ask you to pay them back.
- You're required to have 5 job applications or interviews a week. In my opinion, that's not realistic for professional positions. So, keep copies of all emails that you send to friends, recruiters, etc regarding your job search. I recommend a simple spreadsheet to easily track who you talk/email with. You may need it as documentation.

any email sent or phone call made counts as one of your 5 for the week, regardless of any response you may or may not get.

we had our councelling at the office for the entire place, and that was mentioned. also mentioned, you are supposed to be looking for work from 8-5, and they do have some number of investigators to follow these things, so its possible that they could drop your benefits if you are caught doing something non-job hunting related during those hours. but i suspect the likelihood of that is remote at best.
