Lonestar Showdown (8.5 to 8.5)

So right now we have 7.5 pts to aTm's 8.5 pts. There are three events left (1 pt available for each event): Men's outdoor track and field, Women's outdoor track and field, and the baseball series (winner of 2 of 3 games in series gets the point). All three events take place the weekend of May 16-18.

We need to win at least 2 of these 3 events to win the showdown (tie goes to previous winner).

That said...

I know we have had some struggles in baseball this year but how do we match-up against the ags?

Also, what can we expect out of the men's and women's track championships?

I think all three are going to be very tight. A&M's track and field programs have really come on, and I think both are ranked higher than the UT programs. That doesn't necessarily mean anything, but it gives you an idea of the competition. In baseball, you never can tell. No Aggie is going to give an objective assessment, and a lot of Texas fans will say we should be happy to get 1 out of 3. They will obviously be the favorites, given that they're ranked higher and two of the games are at their field, but it's baseball. Texas probably has more of a motivational factor, since they need the series more than A&M does for far more important reasons than the Lone Star Showdown.

even the years we won it, i thought it was stupid. so did aggy. now that aggy will win it (no way Texas covers two of those three events) they will claim it is huge.

byrne will throw a pasture party.

Im with GOO....who cares. its some made up corporate advertising crap. So we lose this year. Does it really matter. They are still aggy.

None of us give a rat's ***, but don't underestimate how much it will mean to lowly & obnoxious aggy if they win this ******** corporate trophy... I think they will be goin' nuts for months

12 months is how long they will go nuts. They lose each and every time but manage to win just once and it is the end all, be all. It goes to show you who really rules the roost. We win, we don't give a crap, no big deal. I don't even care if they win. But their constant yammering about it will be what gets tiresome. That they will think it is a big deal will be sad, pathetic and well, aggy.

don't forget about the aggie choke. i predict a&m loses in the remaining sports. then you all can get your jollies and yell "pooooooorrrr agggggggiieeesss" in unison.

I hope not. I know for myself I won't care. I will just be glad that we won't have to hear the yammering. To be honest, I have never ever even discussed this showdown with ag friends. We jab rival stuff and they glee in the past two years of football but not once has the Showdown ever been brought up.

I disagree. I think this is a big deal. I think its kind of weak for you guys to be posting that you don't care. You sound like a bunch of kids who just lost a recess kickball game.
I can't grasp how aggy's programs, especially women's athletics, can be better than Texas. Their is no excuse for that, whether its funding, poor coaching, ect. If its handled correctly and if fans and coaches are discontent with aggy winning, it can only better all programs and enable them to be more competitive on a national level.

I've never heard an aggie mention the words "Lonestar Showdown", and likewise, I've never uttered those words to an aggie. But should they win this once, it will suddenly become the greatest athletic achievement in the history of mankind.

This makes the Ags excited because they recognize that Texas usually has nationally ranked programs in every sport. I can see why it would be a big deal for them.

If they can become a nationally competitive program, that's fine. It doesn't affect Texas's perception of what its programs need to be, because they already have the right focus.

That's why Byrne pushed for this thing. It's a job benchmark for him.

Dumb program or not, it's aggrevating to have lost more sports matchups to A&M than vise versa over the past year.

There will unquestionably be t-shirts and mass celebration, followed by days of e-mail campaigns to ESPN demanding to know why there was no mention of this monumental achievement on SportsCenter. And Bill Byrne will be offended when ESPN tells them "you're still not as good as they are, and you're probably never going to be."

Once again, you guys don't care yet there is a 16 post thread about it... Almost as amusing as saying you don't care about A&M when a lot of the time more than 50% of the thread topics on Basketball/Football are A&M related.

But you guys don't care.

Nobody is saying they don't care about A&M. Understand that the Lone Star Showdown just doesn't mean a whole lot to Texas fans anymore, since the Horns have pummeled the Aggies every year since its inception. It's gotten to be pretty redundant.

You guys have a 1 point lead on the strength of your women's programs. Congrats. The difference between your fanbase and the Texas fanbase is that Texas fans care how they stack up against the best teams in America. Your fanbase cares only how they stack up against Texas, and that's why you're all wetting your pants over the prospect of potentially winning a corporate trophy that no one outside of College Station will know or care about. And you think Texas fans are obsessed with you?

The problem is it doesn't matter much, but we have to win it or you guys will never shut up. Aggies are like a squeaky little dog. Usually, we just kick you across the room, but sometimes you get a little bite on our leg, and then you strut around like you're the toughest dog on the block.

We could win this thing for 100 years, but when you guys win it one time, we will never hear the end of it.

Honestly, its about the same from either direction. No one at A&M really cares about the thing (most don't even know about it). No one at UT really cares about the thing.

Just like everything about the two schools, there's a small percentage of people that will beat their chest about it, but most of the student population really doesn't care.

When they beat us in anything, it's a national holiday to them.

That said, I sure hope we can win the Showdown again.

Honestly, as long as Texas is still on top when it comes to the major men's sports, I'm not going to lose any sleep over the damn Lone Star Showdown. The best thing about winning it is that it forces A&M to face the reality that they are inferior. But Texas is not going to win it every single year. If once in four years is they best they can do, they are the ones who should be upset about the whole thing.

However, I just don't feel like it matters either way. I would trade every Lone Star Showdown trophy from now until the sun burns out to be perennial national title contenders in the sports that really matter.

Beating A&M should never be the standard. If it were, we'd be no different than them. Their burning desire to beat Texas hasn't gotten them anything. Look at their perception of their football program. They haven't won a bowl game in 7 years and haven't sniffed a BCS bowl or being a national top 10 team in a decade, yet they honestly believe they could be the best team in the Big XII and have a legit shot at winning a national title in the near future. They have no idea that they have not accomplished anything near what Texas has accomplished on a national scale. That's what devoting all your energy to winning one game will do to you.

bassale, you do understand that we are not over TAMU in the major men's sports this year, don't you? We lost in football and split in basketball.

And I'm not buying that most Aggies don't know or care about the Lone Star Showdown. There are posts all over Aggie message boards feverishly updating the status of the contest and hand-wringing about who is favored to win each of the remaining points. If you guys manage to win it, it will be all you will talk about for the next 12 months.
