Leading Candidates?

According to many people on this board, Tech does not have a single player who could crack the UT starting 5 which means he needs to up his game significantly in recruiting.
Beijing, perhaps, but I think your comment misses the larger picture. Our team was freakin loaded, and we couldn’t win even one game in the tournament, as usual. So obviously Beard can take “no talent” and do more with it than Shaka could do with perhaps the best talent and the most experience we have seen in Austin probably in decades.

I’ll take coaching over talent every time and I personally believe that Beard is a done deal, to be announced April 1st or 2nd.

Here's 10 possibilities, most mentioned here. McCasland is interesting, but I wonder how he would handle the pressures and responsibilities of a big time program like Texas.

Texas' 10 best candidates to replace Shaka Smart after his departure for Marquette (msn.com)

Beard is the obvious choice, but is he the best? One would have to be missing some screws though to chose living in Lubbock over Austin. One of the most depressing places in the country. Nothing but a flat, ugly dust bowl. Unless you live a few miles in Muleshoe.

I’d love to get Beilein

Do any of you notice that if you poop someone’s post the next time you post they poop it. No explanation why, just petulant. Beilein is a great coach with an impressive resume. What do you not like about him SabreHorn?

Having met him in a social setting (with people who knew him), I found him boorish, rude, not to mention he cheats his *** off. I don't want to be buddy-buddy with a coach. I want him to produce and win, but do it with class.

If we were to go that way, I would much rather have Pitino

Did we save any of Abe Lemon's DNA?

"Finish last in your league and they call you idiot. Finish last in medical school and they call you doctor."

I would bet that if Beard was at Texas this year with the talent Shanka had, we would still be playing next weekend.
Just like every other coach in America, he cannot make excuses for his players being beneath par as he recruited him. Maybe he would be an upgrade, maybe not. I hope we do better, but unlike most on this board I will give him or anyone else who is the next coach my full support assuming they are not an ***. Please quit giving me this crap about Lubbock, good coaches get

I Hope you are wrong as I fail to see the "big upgrade". Of course unlike most of the people on this board, if he becomes our coach, he will have my full support just like Shaka had my full support.

Unfortunately, the Jim Valvano’s of the world are once every half century. Won NC in his 3rd season at NC State.

I want Kelvin Sampson as coach.

I think the guy is a really good coach, but I'm afraid if basketball players are not required to go to class, make meaningful progress towards a degree in something, that attitude & practice will spread to football, baseball, and none rev sports.

Then their is the whole cheating and buying players, plus filling the offices up with street agents.

If he would clean it up and do it right, I'd take him, but something about old dogs and new tricks.

The "others" would be me, and about 90% of the posters. An overwhelming number of the "others", including me, were 100% behind Shanka in the early years. Our opinions of him as a person and a recruiter have not changed. However, we now have 6 years of results that tell us what kind of coach he is and we believe him. Your very small group believe that if he repeats what he has done for 6 years, he will get different results. See Einstein's opinion on this matter.

speaking of quit giving us crap.......
The post is about Beard possibly replacing Beard and not Shaka. Beard came in 6th place in Big 12 and nearly everyone on this board says he can't recruit because he is in Lubbock. I call BS. I am saying hire a really good coach. Not someone who finishes 6th place in the same conference as us and can't recruit. You in particular always talk about Texas being a place that is about championships, so I find it really hard to believe that you want to hire a guy who had a worse year than Shaka. Maybe you will point to his runs the last couple of years. Guess what, the guy we just fired was hired because of an NCAA final four run. Kindof a similar resume. Similar resume did not work out in football. Why should it work in basketball? BTW, did you see Beard's last game? He was clearly out coached. I watched it.

This goes for Beard also.

Uh oh.

Hopefully he doesn’t pull an April fools joke—say that he’s coming, then say “just kidding.”

I have NOT posted that we should go after Beard to replace Shanka. I posted that Beard would have probably have done more with the talent that Shanka had this year. That is a pretty long list of coaches, in my opinion. I will leave that decision to CDC, he also has a record of hiring coaches.

I presume you were referring to TTU's loss to Arky, 68-66 in the game Beard was clearly out coached, in your opinion. You hoops knowledge must be better than mine, again, that is a long list on this board alone.
Arky clearly had vastly superior talent as we did. .

Some outside the box candidates could include NBA assistants, women coaches, former NBA coaches, and Euro League coaches.

Sark makes $5.2 and Beard makes $5 at Tech. Are we really going to pay him more than Sark to come here?
Pay them the same with incentives tied to it. Equality of salaries is good optics to battle the recruiting competition who say that Texas is football school that will always have Basketball as a third or fourth fiddle. (even though Texas IS clearly a football school as we all know)
But if Beard comes, continues to win games in the NCAA, take us deep every so often, maybe wins a championship along the way, then Basketball will become much more fun and attractive, and it will sell out the new venue on a regular basis.
College students love to attend BB games if the team they are watching gives them something to cheer about. It's a winter sport. Pent up energy explodes in the coliseum. Especially if we win often and in clutch situations.

Beard is a dynamo who seems to bring out the best in his players. He put TTU on a different basketball level. One they had never achieved. He deserves a chance to see what he can do at his alma mater.

And by the way, every time I see a post using the name "Shanka", I intend to poop it.

While Coach Smart disappointed with his overall coaching record and lack of NCAA tourney success, he has always represented himself and our University with class and grace (even in the way he exited the program), and has done nothing to deserve any personal vitriol, hatred, or childish name-calling, in stark contrast to the recently departed football coach.

Eh, no one impugned Shaka Smart, the man. I'm sure "Shanka" is just a joke referring to his coaching.

Beard is the most obvious choice (CDC will figure out if he's the best choice).

As a regular to Lubbock, I find being inside the town fine. Great people. But it's M. Night Shyamalan's The Village. If you leave the town limits, it's a boogie man of smells and sights. If you're willing to live the life of a Villager, you're probably ok with Lubbock.
