But he still couldnt confirm the islands exact location until he could actually find it and have his own people do some recon. So, I say, him staging the fake plane crash makes no sense. How could he? Until then, he only had theories to go by. Nothing concrete. In addition, if Ben's argument to Locke was correct and Widmore wants to exploit the island for pecuniary reasons, then how did the fakery advance that goal? Throw off other seekers as to the location? It seems more reasonable that the capt was correct and Ben did it. As we have seen in a flashforward, he apparently has tremendous resources himself.

I also wonder how the dudes in the Antartic fit in? Perhaps that is the right place to cover both the South Pacific and Indian Oceans or maybe they were somehow trying to take advantage of its unique magnetic properties.

Finally, as pointed out above, there is something wrong about the location of the fake plane. I hope they clear it up eventually as I am having trouble working though this detail.

He wouldn't need to find the real plane to fake it. He'd simply have to have some reason to think it was on the island. If he did, faking the crash would keep people from wondering where it went.

For me, you have to ask yourself who are the good guys. Based on us seeing Sayid with Ben, plus how upset the 6 seem to be about leaving, I'm guessing the good(ish) guy is Ben.

I think the rich dude (Penny's dad) has made it his life's goal to find the Island because of its mystical properties. Perhaps he used to be in business with Ben or even helped to create the Dharma initiative.

He created a large yearly boat race that purposely tracked through possible island locations in hopes somebody would find it (enter Desmond).

After losing Desmond, he had a good idea of where the Island must be. When the plane crashed, he paid a huge amount of money to get the plane's black box. This gave him the near exact location of the island. He had to stage a fake plane wreck to throw off investigators, government authorities, and perhaps others looking for the island.

It's still unclear to me if Penny's dad has money or super-natural motivations. Penny obviously caught wind of her Dad’s plans and realized that her one true love [Desmond] was just a pawn in his plot to find the island. She now too is looking for the island (she's funding the guys at the north pole).

The Oceanic 6 are paid HUGE amounts of money to keep up the plane wreck story. They also agree morally it’s a good idea that the world not know about the island (but now feel guilty remembering the ones they left behind). The fact that they survived this horrific plane crash is what makes them celebrities. People survive plane crashes all the time, but these 6 that survived is just amazing.

why does everyone get the healing properties of the island but ben..remember his tumor...is it because he is evil?

I think that Ben is a master of the time warp thing and he is going back in time to arrange stuff like the fake plane crash. He can be sitting next to Locke one minute and the next, he is setting stuff up to cover for the island. Didn't that psychiatrist lady say that Ben is right where he wants to be. ....

If Ben mastered the time travel thing, it would explain how he knows everything about the people on the oceanic flight.

AND we still don't know for sure who the last member of the Oceanic 6 is! Hopefully they will reveal this week, because there's going to be a short break after this episode while they finish filming the new episodes

I understand the arguement about Aaron being one of the ^, but I mean we don't know for sure because they haven't said for sure, and you cant really assume much with this show. Maybe we will get a little clarification tomorrow
