July 1 Cutoff date for Football - ugh

Two months ago, I assumed people making this argument didn't know about COVID-19's astonishing rate of spread, how contagious it is, the high death rate, and so on. So I'd reply to something like this with facts and figures.

At this point, I assume people making this argument aren't the type of people who concern themselves with trifles like "facts" or "math" or what the "experts" have to say. So I don't bother.
It does appear to be 3x more contagious than the flu, but it has the same fatality rate as the flu. So, it’s like 3 flu seasons compressed into one. So, the response is not to fear the death rate, but to mitigate the spread.

Can you explain to me why Texas has 1200 deaths and NY has 27000 deaths even though Texas has 50% more population? More generally why are some states have lower deaths than others? Without this key data, anyone claiming to make decisions on “data” or even wanting to is frankly not thinking critically.

Population density is one thing. Also, it hit NY quickly, before individuals had a chance to take precautions. In TX, ppl had time to react.

Honolulu is very densely populated too and very little cases. Explain that.

They are still locked down and extending lock down.
Also, it is an island.
A little easier to control traffic in and out.
NY is the traffic hub of the US.
I would imagine the virus was streaming in there from all over the world before they even started to battle it.

One of the next things to watch will be if specific conferences approve their football programs returning to practice or even just athletic training. Any perceived competitive advantages will immediately stoke new pressures within other conferences to return. For now...this is just about facilities reopening for voluntary workouts...

SEC sets May 22 vote on athletic facility openings

Based on what I have observed from the college aged kids who have returned home in the last week, 50% will test positive for antibodies by Sept 1.

Just one of many views/ideas for fans being floated out there right now. This one from Dan Patrick (Lt. Gov not ESPN lol).

Texas Lt. Gov. makes proposal for spectators when sports resume

Many plans and ideas out there right now but as we draw closer the details/realities/challenges of implementing procedures if fans are to be allowed will become more evident.

Totally guessing here, but in the case of NCAA, I think you are going to see alot of governors leave it up to the school/county/municipality and, in the case of Austin, wouldn't surprise me a bit if we have no fans at DKR to start season. The fact that most of the discussion is starting to shift from if play will occur to "what about fans" says alot.

Seems at this point with NCAA saying they will not dictate and a growing chorus leaning towards a season that there will be NCAA football of some kind...just maybe not for all programs. Seems the real test of timing will be when athletes return for conditioning and practice and the cooperation/coordination with opponents from schools or programs not as enthusiastic to field teams.

Will be real interesting to see if the athletes themselves start breaking ranks or what influence their desire or lack of desire to play factors...already seeing this in NBA regarding the current season. Wouldn't surprise me to see pressure from athletes and even some transfers from programs/conferences that choose not to play and wouldn't surprise either to see a few athletes scared to return...though I'll bet the former is more prevalent.

What's the death rate for young athletes?

The chance of an American under 24 dying from the virus (less than 1 in 1M) is less than the odds of dying from lighting (1 in 700,000)

(Even the under 54 group has a relatively low risk)

It's my understanding that there will be an announcement from the UIL about Texas HS football on Monday.
Any HS coaches on the board here with any info on that?

Not a coach but my guess would be no season. Seems early to decide but I'm not expecting football this year except for the NFL.

..

Only thing I like about Patrick’s plan is that there are people working on some plans. My very selfish attitude is that if they are playing and I have season tickets, plus the donation, I want to be there, period. How many season ticket holders this year? Maybe they should all get in but no single tickets. See, I admit my selfishness.

Bigger problem I see than seating are areas like the Terrace club, etc. those places are elbow to elbow. No way that will go on,,,,,,so refund?

FWIW....

My opinion is whether it's Disney World, a sporting event, or a concert, I say you open it up 100% (with or without masks), or you keep it closed. Some things are not meant to operate at reduced capacity.

Going to be an interesting barometer/indicator of just how powerful sport is in this country as this all plays out.

People who have antibodies should be able to show up.
Except now they are saying they are seeing people with antibodies are getting sick again. They are researching to see if it is a relapse or a mutant strain.

The authorities have kept us down since mid-march (~2 months). That is about all the American people will take before calling BS on the whole deal. Short of martial law, I don't know how California is going to keep people bottled-up until the end of August like their current Order says. However, it is going to take at least 2 more 14-day cycles to see where we stand. Any decisions about the fall made before 01 July may have to be changed.

This is pure speculation. There are some folks who likely tested positive for the virus (not antibodies) when in fact they were negative due to false test and then getting sick.
