Javonne Shepard enters transfer portal

If a guy wants to bail on his teammates in the middle of the season then he doesn't possess the character required to play championship football. We could have used his athletic ability next year, but I'd rather go to war with guys who will not bail on me when the going gets tough.

I didn't like the way he handled his recruitment, I saw it as a indication he was immature, but I gave him the benefit of the doubt since he came in and worked hard to reshape his body. If I'm Herman, I do the kid a favor and tell him he can transfer to any school in the country except for anyone on our schedule over the next 4 years or aggsy. I'm sure he will love that.

I thought he went through his choices to be certain he would make the correct choice for him. I guess his evaluation was not that complete.

I think their well may be academic problems although he seems to be a bright and self-aware young man. Bottom line is if he does not want to be here, let him go.

What's crazy is an OT comes in and of course is not going to start. And then transfers in the middle of the season. It was like with Rising last year. Comes in 2nd string as a frosh. He knew he wasn't going to start for 3 years. I mean did he really think he was going to replace Sam? Then transfers. I mean how can these guys be that stupid? You should be able to evaluate the depth chart and understand your role. It's not rocket science. I'm just amazed at how really stupid the world is. Like people think in this parallel universe outside of logic. I'd slap my kid silly and tell him to grow a pair if they quit in the middle of the season. If you're not happy at the end of the year maybe, but finish what you at least started this year. It's called bing a man, something these kids parents don't hold them to. My kids knew I'd never put up with that type of bull ****. Finish what you start whether you like it or not. Worlds not always going to give you lemonade right out of the jar.
I don't know about the rest of you, but Wadster is my new favorite person on hornfans. I'm going to wait until I'm bored and then post something about Todd Orlando is the best defensive coach I've ever read about (because I've never watched a game, EVER)….. ;-)

What gives with so many incoming frosh? They expect to be “the guy” as soon as their feet hit campus? No concept of working hard and out working the guy in front of them on the depth chart. I have no patience and no use for guys like that.

I don't know Shepard or what "floats his boat"; hence i am not prepared to criticize him nor to praise him.

What I do know is that I have been around and sometimes involved with this program longer than most on this board. During that time I have had the opportunity to visit with several kids that wanted to "quit" and/or "go home". Granted that was long before "the portal", which should be referred to as "the porta potty", because it's temporary and full of ****.

Three of the kids I talked to were depressed and wanted out. One became a three year letterman and is in The Longhorn Hall of Honor. One became a 3-4 year letterman and lasted in the NFL 6-7 years. A third one was overwhelmed academically and from a time management problem. Couple that with the coaches playing him out of position (constantly criticized on radio shows), he was miserable. This kid had no "portal", but lettered 4 years, was a first round NFL pick and first team All American.

Again, I don't know Shepherd, and if he doesn't want to stay for whatever reason, this team needs him, but needs no additional negativity. Thanks for coming. If he's looking for money through a street agent, good riddance. I hope he finds what makes him happy short term and what benefits him longterm.

:hookem2:

I don't know what the rumors are. If he's bad-mouthing UT to recruits or sowing discord internally, then screw him. If not, then I wish him well somewhere other than the Big 12 or any school within a 100 mile radius of Austin.

I’m not going to hate on the kid (these are just kids). Maybe he picked Texas because they promised him immediate playing time? Bama was one of the caps on the table so maybe he figured, if I’m gonna sit, I may as well collect rings while I’m doing it. Not gonna do it here. And assuming it’s Bama, they’ve had a WHOLE lot more OLs go in the first round than Texas has.

I have not read any evidence of bad mouthing by Shepherd. And he seems a self aware introspective type. He may be listening to some bad agents out there.

It could be as simple as grades. I’m willing to bet Stanford isn’t on his list of possible destinations.
Well, if he's homesick maybe he'll transfer to Rice. :smokin:

Better yet, maybe he'll have a change of heart, learn a tough lesson or two, and stick it out to become a star player at UT.

Looks like he is gone....Beck said he wasn't practicing with the team, so looks like he is history, and that also points to the probability of him actually being a cancer to the program if he is no longer participating in team functions.

If he's no longer participating, what happens if he doesn't go to class? Didn't look but seems it would be past the drop deadline. If it's grades, wouldn't he have to go juco next year?

I'll be fishing Sat. Wake me when we get a new DC. Fall days on the lake are the best. If I thought of all the time spent watching football over the last 60 years I could have learned enough to guide in my retirement. Maybe I'm the stupid one :-) Probably saved enough to have a killer bass boat too instead of my CC.

not grades...CANCER.... The guy was bad-mouthing Texas to recruit who just de-committed. Also reports of him being in a fight with another player ( Ossai I think )

People who bad-mouth their situation is avoiding the issue. Immaturity with a capital I.

Hope you catch em ALL!

During his recruitment I recall posting something about how these type of guys rarely work out. After he committed I was happy we got the talent, but it surely doesn't surprise me he's now a problem. He needs to be locked out of the facilities and banned from campus if he really is instigating fights with the team and negative recruiting. GTFO!

Agree
It’s not for everyone. You actually have to work hard and think of someone besides yourself in the Texas Football program. He probably had parenting issues growing up. This is not behavior my children will exhibit freshman year.
