I think Butch is just justifying recruiting Fla rather than Texas. Shouldn't be necessary since he is driving distance to Jacksonville. Still a foolish quote and one even he knows is grossly overstated. Schools in Texas have more money than God, If one only recruited Southlake, The Woodlands, Highland Park, and Austin Westlake you could see the point. But what percentage of Top recruits here come from those type programs. I only counted 2 from the 2010 Scout top 125 from those schools. Instead there is a large percentage from Ft Worth Dunbar, Lufkin, Desoto, Cedar Hill, Garland, John Tyler,... There may be a few more wealthy schools I didn't name, but obviously 95% or more of the big time recruits come from average schools like Pahokee, Fla. Also, I'm pretty sure Fla has even more of the rich schools than Texas does..... however, Mathew Stafford came from Highland Park and he may indeed be the same player he was 3 yrs ago

Ignoring those fully-developed players that can help you win immediately is probably what has allowed Weis to turn a perennial Top 10 football program into a 10-15 team the last 2 years. And if Weis, Maisel, or Butch Davis thinks Texas players can't develop post-High School, perhaps they should look closer at our Offensive MVP (McCoy) and Defensive MVP (Orakpo) from last year.

I read that when Eric Dickerson got to SMU (from Sealy High) his max bench press 120 lbs. No room for improvement there but he still did OK...

Maisel is like a lot of writers who can't make the transition from print to multimedia. He has to write something down and edit and edit and edit (and then he still misses the ball more often than not). He's not a true dumbass...his brain just isn't fast enough for his mouth sometimes.
