Ivan Maisel on UT Recruiting

Actually it was PHAT PHIL at Tenn who first started the garbage about Texas players having plateau'd. It was back when the starting center on his team was wanting to come back to Texas after his soph year. Phil wouldn't grant him a release and made some comments about Texas players being overated and fully developed, so they don't grow any as football players. I believe this happened back in 01 or 02.

that whole answer was dumb on so many levels, it's hard to really know where to start poking it to shreds... so I won't try.
But... if there's anything to that whole "danger" of early recruiting - why does everyone fall for it? Face it, we don't have a ton more offers than anyone else out there, we just have a ton more that answered: "YES".

In fact, does anyone know how many offers Fat Charlie has out? I wouldn't be at all surprised to hear he has more
out than Mack does. I guess if all his decided they wanted to verbal, he'd tell them to hold off, so he could make sure nobody else had a better senior year... yeah, that's the ticket!

Its like saying that only 5A schools have the best players because they are the biggest schools. Kids at 5A programs dont get pimples and are all 300 pounds have cannon arms.

Surely no kids at smaller 2A schools could possibly be as good......

Im glad to hear that Texas kids have peaked by the time they are 18.....

Rocat nailed it. Mack has offered WAY fewer kids -- they're just saying HELL YES at a 70% clip. Compare that to ---oh let's say --Sherm. What does he have, 80 offers and 8 commits. All from kids no one else wants

Last time I looked at Rivals recruiting list, nearly every kid in their top 100 has one, or several, outstanding offers. Mack just happens to get lots of early commits.

Are all those other coaches dumb too? (Or is Charlie Weis just that much smarter than they are?)

We have dropped a few. Anotine Hicks comes to mind. He did qualify and signed with TCU after we dumped him. We were loaded at the WR spot, but it did happen.

guys, dont forget that texans start eating cornbread at a much earlier age than people in other states.

Anotine Hicks wasn't dropped. He didn't make the needed grades and apologized to UT for not making them and showed class. Emmanuel Moody was dropped because after he verbaled he violated the agreement and listened to his Uncle and visited other schools.
I wonder if now Florida, LSU, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, USC, Missour, Kansas etc. will stop recruiting in Texas when the words of this article get out. Auburn might withdraw its' offer to Mr. Seastrunk.

Actually, there is some legitimacy to the notion that some players have peaked in Texas because of the strong high school programs here. I don't find it that unreasonable to think that because the state puts such a high value on high school football that some players may have maxed out before they get to college. I'm sure it happens quite a bit.

I'm also sure that the coaches take this into consideration when they are recruiting them. Does a guy have the frame to bulk up and maintain his speed? Does this kid come from a school where they put a premium on weight lifting or is he from a school where the weight room is an afterthought? Does some kid look like he's been taking steroids since 6th grade? You would have to be stupid or lazy not to take that sort of thing into consideration, regardless of if you are recruiting Texas or Timbuktu. You don't project a kid as an 18 year old, you project him as a 22 year old.

The advantage that UT has in state is that the coaching staff has developed such good relationships with the high school coaches that they know these type of things and they get their information early so they can make quick decisions and line up their targets.

Mitch, he didn't say their football skills wouldn't improve. He said they won't get bigger or faster. He's saying Texas kids mature physically faster than everywhere else. It's why his statement was stupid.

There is an argument that some Texas HS programs excel at preparing players for certain systems. That is a positive to many coaches. In fact I hear the exact opposite for why every big school wants a kid from Texas. Texas prepares certain positions better for the transition than other states.

To say that because they're better prepared they're incapable of improvement is idiotic.

There is no difference in our kids maturity than any other. Texas kids may be better prepared so there is less difference in their play as a Senior than a Freshman compared to other states, but that makes the recruit MORE valuable not less.

@ LotusBlade

Not exactly. I think he is referring to the possibility that players from Texas are more likely to have spent time in the weight room or on speed work and do not have the same room for improvement that players in other states have when it comes to attributes that can be improved through weight lifting and skill training. This is because those other places do not put such a focus on football programs and thus do not have the same facilities/coaching. Have you seen Lake Travis' weight room or training facilities for instance? Probably better than most D1 schools.

Its still a stupid argument. Football programs in Texas, for the most part, are not light years ahead of programs in other hotly recruited states like Florida and California.

Maisel should be embarrassed. I never felt like he had a grudge against UT when he was in Dallas, but that was a loadof crap.

Flashhorn, I don't care what weight rooms are any where. It's not going to stop a body from maturing. I'd like to see some scientific proof that a nice weight room when you're 16 and 17 makes your body incapable of maturing later in life.

Is Maisel following the NFL draft?
Stafford a QB(from a dallas HS) is very likely to go #1 in a couple of weeks. I've seen polls where Jevan Snead might be the #1 QB next year. If Colt was a couple inches taller, he would be right up there as well. And, of course, Vince first QB off the board in 06.

There's a ton of talent in Texas that is not only good enough for college football, but develops into top NFL talent as well.

After last seasons scintillating 7-6 record, Weis is taking aim at Mack Brown's record over the last five years.

All he needs to do is go 49-2 and win a national title and all his bowl games.

Just penis envy fat boy.

Texas has offered 30 kids for the 2010 class. Notre Dame has offered 67. Weis is, of course, full of ****.

I know one thing is for sure, colleges REALLY don't like their students to come in from high school knowing anything. They shouldn't study, or know test taking strategies because they peak and simply can't learn anything.

He must be right. Earl Campbell looked exactly the same at John Tyler as he did for the Oilers. That Tyler program really developed players....
