It's coming...and I can't wait

Beliefs aside, is this film going to be worth seeing? I get the impression that the intent is to reinforce ideas in a given audience. Maybe like Borat with a motive.

Maher is very different from the average proselytizing religious person in his filmmaking in that he makes a living by entertaining. Schtick is money in the bank for him. There is nothing inherently hypocritical about opposing someone who ridicules one's point of view, even if that person employs techniques which may appear analogous. Bill Maher and Teresa of Calcutta (to pick a counterexample) have (had) virtually nothing in common.
I am a (Catholic) Christian, and I am more sad for BM than anything else. I find his rants no threat to my faith or daily life. I have no desire to restrict his behavior. There are surely many who act under the false title of Christians (or adherents to some other faith), but that does not make them the real deal. A true believer who seeks to teach others the truth out of love and for the purpose of helping them to know eternal bliss is not remotely comparable to one who baits and videotapes the less composed, only to hold them out later in an attempt to ridicule millions of others. I must concur with Coel that asserting one's beliefs in the face of their mockery (in this case "complaining about" Religulous) is far from hypocrisy.

As for Christianity's teaching disdain and unworthiness of unbelievers, the answer is yes and no. Christianity teaches that all
persons are unworthy of heaven, hence He is the only way to salvation. He does not specify exactly what one must do for Him to allow a soul to heaven, but many here would be surprised regarding doctrine on that point. Christianity teaches the exact opposite of disdain for unbelievers; it teaches that we are called to love them and refrain passing judgment on them (not though necessarily from on the behaviors and words of theirs which contradict the faith-- an important if sometimes difficult distinction).

notreally:

Can we know, or understand, everything about Truth? Or is there some part of Truth that will always remain beyond the grasp of our cognitive and logical abilities?

Religion belongs in the church.

Keeping it out of the schools and the government would make the US a much better place to live.

Hell then I would not have to wait until noon on Sunday to buy beer !

RyanUTAustin,
Do you agree or disagree with this statement:

Jesus Christ was physically on this planet 2,000 years ago.

It is a very difficult question to answer. If I had to answer I would say that I don't think that is accurate.

Do to the time line discrepancies in the bible of when certain gospels were written in relation to the actual events, it would be a leap of faith for me to say that Jesus was on this planet 2000 years ago.

I actually believe that Jesus most likely didn't exist at all. If he did then he was one of 3 things:
1) A mad man / crazy
2) A liar and manipulator
3) The son of god / divine

There is evidence for both sides of if he was real or not, but it is a very profound question and one to be honest, I am not very researched on. I have just read through this article and a few others.

Why do you ask?

i most certainly believe that jesus believed he was the prophet or son of god. just as i most certainly believe that many emperors and powerful leaders throughout history believed they were gods. and what jesus accomplished (yes i believe he was real.... too many account of him not to be) with no money, power, or military is one of the most astounding stories in history.

but just because he believed he was the son of god, and many other people at that time and since do/have...... doesn't mean i should discount the fact that jesus was a human, and he certainly wasn't the first, or the last, person that some people believe is/was the second coming. he was human and he was killed by humans.

i even believe that some people had a vision and saw him rise from the dead. but that doesn't mean it happened. it means they saw it happen or thought they saw it happen.

jesus was a great man by many accounts. so was ghandi.
