Is Kobe really better than Jordan?

Well i have to say as I go back and read all the posts, I am happy to say that most of my fellow hornfans basketball posters have a much better grasp of reality than I had previously thought. I really don't think it's even close. Jordan was and is the best of all time. I would say Magic and Bird are a close 2nd and 3rd in that order. But even magic and bird will tell you that Jordan was the best. When all the fellow greats are in awe of you, that tells me something...

Another thing, I was watching last night and the more I watch I get the feeling that most of the other players in the league don't fear kobe like they feared Jordan. Just my read.

I think Kobe is an amazing player but not MJ.

Kobe's team lost a 24 point lead. When was the last time MJ lost even a 10 point lead in the Finals???

I hate Kobe but i have to agree that he is the best player in the game today.
But to compare him to MJ is completely unfair to Kobe. Even Kobe doesnt like the comparison.

MJ is better than Kobe in most categories but Kobe may be better in those categories than anybody who has played the game since MJ.
I disagree that MJ is a better scorer than Kobe. I actually think they are equal with Kobe being a better outside shooter (MJ averaged 0.5 3pt/game over his career while Kobe gets over 2/game) but Mike is better in the post. Both are equally great at getting to the rim.
What may seperate MJ in the scorer category is that MJ was better in crunch time.

Bad arguement at this point in Kobes career. Who knows this may be a valid arguement in another 5-10 years

there are times Kobe is just as good as MJ but he can't maintain that high level for too long. MJ was also better built and tougher, much stronger and explosive. I'd say Kobe is about 80% of MJ, which is still great and is the best player in the world.

people say MJ was the greatest of all time. However, people forget Kareem with endless skills on O and D and the boards. Good passer too. We did not see him in the 70s so people forget.

Kareem had much better talent around him than MJ did. He blocked shots, but he took off on defense a lot in his mid to late years.

By the way, Kobe has gotten worse and worse as this series has continued. So I vote No! to the comparison to MJ.

Lew, and he was Kareem in the 70s also. Even at age 38 he did very well vs. Boston and the best frontline in the history of the sport. Kareem also had good games vs. a young ferocious Hakeem.

No. That is like comparing Phil to Tiger.

Kobe is the best player in the game today. MJ was a freak of nature. You could not stop him.

Here's the difference between Kobe and Jordan once and for all:

Kobe at his most wants to be the best player in the world. Congrats, he's there.

Jordan at his most, wanted to win the most. Period. Being the best in the world and never winning would have been the greatest of humiliation.

This is the main difference I see between them. The irony is that by Kobe not wanting what he should want the most, he slowly loses his title of legitimately the "best in the world." He may be the best collection of an offensive weapon and (really stretching it) athletic ability among others, but they are just individual parts that don't work efficiently for the end goal- to win. In that, he loses something as the best "player" and will be overtaken by guys like Lebron James and Chris Paul in due time.

Kobe can't hold Jordan's jockstrap. Example...last night, game six. Jordan would have found a way to win. He's the best ever...period.

The Bulls with Jordan in his prime didn't lose when playing for championships. Period. Kobe's good, but Jordan was at an entirely higher level.

Jordan had some very good teammates, much better than Kobe did this year.

Rodman , Pippen, Kukoc, Grant, Hodges, Kerr, Stacy King, Scott Williams, Perdue, Longley, Cartwright, Harper, Brian Williams, Paxson.

1994 bulls won 55 games and almost made the Finals.

You can go to the SI archives and pull up the "Jordan Rules" article. It tells of how Daly's champion Pistons focused their entire defense on Jordan, always doubling, and sometimes triple-covering him (I know zones were illegal; you have to read the srticle). In doing so, they knew they could hold him to 30 points, and make him work for it. They felt that was worth it, because if they didn't, he'd certainly lay 45+ on them.

This will seem heretical to many, but I truly believe that Kobe has better basketball skills than Jordan. Jordan is the clearly superior player and had a clearly superior career, but Kobe is every bit Jordan's equal in terms of what he can do on a basketball court.

On offense, Kobe is almost Jordan's equal as a penetrator and he is a much better outside shooter. It's really not close -- for all Jordan's greatness, outside shooting was not his strongest suit (especially 3-pointers). Kobe is a deadly outside shooter with almost unlimited range. Jackson says Jordan would have averaged 40 ppg today? I say Kobe could average 45 ppg if he wanted to.

On defense, Jordan was a great defensive guard. So is Kobe. Both of them can lock down most of their opponents. I don't see a clear advantage there.

Jordan's clear and overwhelming advantage over Kobe is between the ears. I have never seen a more dedicated and ruthless competitor in any sport than Jordan. He would do anything to win. Jordan would never
have run Shaq out of town because he wanted to be Batman instead of Robin. Never. Jordan would have recognized that having Shaq gave him the chance to win a lot of rings, and he wouldn't have cared if he had to share the spotlight a little bit.

I think Kobe has always wanted to be the best player in the world, and to be recognized as such. Jordan wanted to win more titles than Magic did. Both got their wish.

To put it another way, if you put Kobe against Jordan in a game of 5-on-5 with two equally balanced teams, Jordan's team would win a 7-game series every time. If you put 1993 Jordan against 2008 Kobe in a game of 1-on-1, I really don't know who would win. But boy would I like to watch.
