No but he sought approval to fight ISIS and didn't get it. Same for Syria. Maybe things were different with Lybia. I don't know. You don't either. We do know that POTUS speaks of "immenent" attacks and the Sec Defense does not know of them. I find that curious.

Osama was not an official of another sovereign so not an act of war. I'm sure Pakistan had a right to be pissed but the fact that he was effectively on the same transformer as their West Point kind of muted any anger they might have.

I have not seen one person claiming that Soleimani didn't deserve to die. What I've seen is that the last two President's had the capability to do what we did. They didn't have or seek authorization from Congress as he is not some fly by night terrorist, he's a General and it is an act of war against a sovereign. The way to take away power from him and his kind (the guy that's going to replace him) is through diplomacy and things like the Iran nuclear agreement.

What happened was Trump was railing about the agreement as a campaign point. The first two rounds of people he hired counseled him to leave it in place. It took getting down to sound, peaceful minds like Bolton and Pompeo before he got to kill the deal and this is the outcome. A less safe world.

The overseas military base complaint is a ******** issue in virtually every situation, and it is in this situation. Iran isn't a problem because we have military bases in the Middle East. That's like the Soviet Union complaining that we had military bases in West Germany during the Cold War. They are one of the biggest reasons we have military bases in the Middle East.

We've had a military presence in the Middle East since the late 1940s or early 1950s. However, it was fairly limited force until the early 1980s. (Hmm, what happened right around that time? Oh yeah, a crazy lunatic came to power in Iran.) We expanded further in the wake of the first Gulf War as well and added some after 9/11 (though actually reduced significantly in Saudi Arabia since then), and of course, we've maintained a significant presence ever since. Iran is a huge part of that, but of course, so was Iraq, the Afghan War, and ISIS.

How many are in countries who asked us to be there?

Virtually all US military bases overseas exist at the request or with the agreement of the host nation. Guantanamo Bay is a notable exception. You can find people who oppose our military bases, but the bottom line is that nobody really wants us to leave except actual enemies of the United States and of the West. Why? Because our bases are a huge economic boom to the host nation. Our personnel spend a lot of money on the local economy. They lease homes (at a premium cost) from local property owners. The bases hire huge numbers of local nationals and pay them well. Will you occasionally hear complaints about isolated issues? Sure, but when we actually close an overseas base, it is almost always against the wishes over the local community, and nobody is happy about it.

For example, Ramstein Air Base gets protested every year. Guess who organizes it? Die Linke (German for "The Left"). Who's Die Linke? They are the successor party to the Socialist Unity Party that governed East Germany. What a friggin' surprise. A bunch of disgruntled communists who are still bitter about the Cold War want a USAF base to close. Well, no ****. And I've seen them a few times. It's a parade of human debris - a bunch of dope-ridden bums and freaks who don't work and haven't taken a bath in a week just like you see at leftist protests in the United States.
