Introducing this year's non-BCS darling

With all of that said, I think BYU is probably better off playing in the Mountain West than in a BCS conference. For BYU, it's probably better to be a big fish in a small pond. It's probably more fun to win a lot of games and occasionally have a shot at a big bowl game than to struggle through a BCS schedule week in and week out. Normally, a school would land higher caliber recruits by moving to a BCS conference but I don't think that would apply to BYU given the religious affiliation and strict religious and character commitments. Middle of the road BCS conference is not that exciting.

Actually if BYU was invited to a BCS conference, they would be recruiting even better players. The problem is, that since they don't belong to the BCS cartel, it gets used against them in the recruiting game. We would have gotten the Haloti Ngata's, Stanley Havili's and Ben Olsens of the world.

That's not to mention that what hurt them the most was breaking away from ESPN and joining a fledling TV network (CSTV) basically made it where hardly anybody could see them play in 2006 and 2007 (two really good years). They recieved alot of publicity in 2001 while on ESPN and would have recieved way more the past 2 years had they stayed with ESPN.

Hagy.....I agree in part with what you're saying, but as far as recruiting, BYU has already been losing quality LDS recruits to the BCS schools, like USC, CAL and Oregon. (i.e. H. Ngati, Ben Olsen, etc.) These kids have been choosing these schools for much of the same reason that kids from Texas back in the 80's and 90's (and still do today , but not as frequently) went out of state. To play in a power conference with the potential to win a natl. champsionship every year. Quite frankly, to want BYU to remain as "a big fish in a little pond" is cowardly. There are good recruits out there, LDS or not, who would go to BYU if BYU was a natl. title contender year in and year out, and played teams besides New Mexico, UNLV , Wyoming, and San Diego st every year, just to name a few.

My beef with BYU fans , even though I am a BYU alum, as a whole has always been that they complain about no respect from the rest of the country when frankly BYU hasn't done anything to earn it. Yes they have been consistently winning those games but against who?

For instance, Gary Crowton's first year at BYU. He had Doman at QB and Staley at RB. BYU comes in with a new offense and, off the top my head, they win what ,their 1st 10 - 11 games? That looks great on paper but the problem is that those wins were not against quality opponents, nor were the wins impressive. (Just because a team is in a BCS conference doesn't make it a qaulity opponent.) They would squeak by teams the weaker MWC teams and then everyone in the BYU nation would claim that BYU deserves a shot at the title. Please.......They then lost their las two to non-conference opponents, the last one being to Louisville, who at the time was an up and coming non-BCS team. This seems to be BYU's argument every year, and yes it gets old.

I had to choose, I would choose a 10-2 LSU team who plays in the SEC, or an 11-1 TEXAS team, etc to play in the natl title game vs an undefeated BYU team who barely gets by weaker MWC opponents anyday. Remember, there are many who point to BYU's '84 natl. title as the reason for why we have the BCS today. A natl. title was decided by a 3 point win vs. a 6-6 Michigan team. Please........

If there is one mid-major non BCS team that had a legitmate argument, it would have to have been 04' Utah, Myer's last year. That team not only won every game but did so in convincing fashion.  BYU has yet to do that. To hear Cougarblue's arguments is like watching an old re-run over and over, the plot like the argument is always the same and it never changes.  I do like Bronco Mendenhall, and what he's done with the program: (1) by reintroducing the old uni's, and (2) dtfczxfdf$#r b BYU plays with that old BYU swagger which has been fun to watch. But until BYU either (1) runs the table with not only wins ,but flat out dominant wins, or (2) joins an elite confenrence where they play quality opponents week in and week out, then BYU's argument will always be the same, annoying as hell and weak.

Typical Ute fan. You are so transparent (with less than 25 posts). Funny that you contadicted yourself with your use of Utah 2004 as an example. I guess you conveniently forgot that back in 2001 Crowton took BYU down to Mississipi St. and beat them in their house. And you conveniently forgot that back in 2006 they went down and beat a damn good TCU team that was ranked 17th at the time after giving a game to BC that BYU did everything in their power to lose (Hell, both of their losses to Az and BC were by a combined 6 pts) and then destroyed Oregon. They then turned around this season and dominated Az in Provo. The teams under Bronco start off kinda slow but gain strength and momentum as the season rolls on.

It doesn't matter what conference you play in (see App St last year) Div 1a is still Div 1a and if BYU goes undefeated with the way they schedule then they deserve to play for it all. They do what they are asked to do and beyond by scheduling tough teams, and if they go undefeated then they deserve the title. Last I heard the MWC was much better than the WAC and there has been a bad habbit by many BCS programs of scheduling patsies instead of having the balls to come to Provo.

Again, you cannot blame BYU one bit for not being invited into the Big 12 or Pac 10.

BYUhorn, you are a typical Ute fan that goes on other peoples message boards and poses as a Y fan. Youre hatred of BYU far exceeds your support of the Utes, sad.

I love College FB with the passion of a Viagra overdose, so don't go there. But with that said I have a College FB love hierarchy:

1. BYU
2. All the Texas Schools
3. SEC

Who on here is bragging about the academic quality of BYU? In the current rankings, BYU ranks below such academic powerhouses as UConn, University of Delaware, and the Colorado School of Mines. Forgive me if I don't proclaim them Harvard of the West.

Until there is a playoff system you can't blame mid-major fans for wanting a shot a big bowls when their teams do well with the schedules they're given. Sometimes they come up big, like Boise St. beating OU and Utah winning thier BCS game, and sometimes they flop, like Hawaii. BCS schools also flop in bowl games. OU seems to have the market cornered in that category.

Hagy…… I think your points are well stated. As far as Ben Olsen, I ran in to him a few times on campus seemed like a great guy and I was hoping he’d have a better career than what he has had thus far. It’s still up in the air if he left because of a coaching change (there were rumors he wasn’t happy with Crowton anyway) or for other reasons, such as the point I was making before. However, it’s all speculation and rumors and there’s no need to beat a dead horse on why he actually left.

As far BYU not getting quality non-LDS players because of BYU’s honor code is still up for debate. I agree with you for the most part, but there have been great non-LDS players in the past who have gone to BYU based upon the higher standards, I think in large part because its attractive to their parents more than anything, who want their kids to stay out of trouble.

But I don’t think BYU would have as difficult a time as some might think, nor would it be the Texas Tech of a BCS conference, although your point is well stated. BYU’s campus, at least its surroundings, are beautiful, in that I mean the mountains, and of course the girls. (BYU has gorgeous women, which definitely influenced my decision to go there) Also, the new indoor practice facility (it was new when I was there) is spectacular. BYU has paid some serious $$$ to upgrade its facilities.

However, I think it would pay even better dividends (as far as athletes) to be in a better conference. Hell, I’ve argued for a couple of years now that if the MWC added Boise St., Fresno St. and Hawaii it would arguably be at least as good to the Big East, if not better, and the BCS would have to acknowledge the MWC as a BCS conference. However, if they were to go to the Pac-10……..? That would be a great move in more ways than one. The opportunity to face USC, Cal, UCLA, Oregon, etc every year would bring in some great recruits and perhaps these kids, who have been bailing on BYU in the past, would come back around.

Anyway, that’s my opinion.

As far as you CougarBlue…………………. WOW! I honestly believe that I’ve grown dumber after reading each one of your posts. You are the stereotypical BYU fan that drives me crazy based upon your ignorance and self righteous attitude. I’ve gone from being a UVSC student…who was too stupid to get into BYU, who is now a Ute fan in disguise waiting to prey on unsuspecting "HappyValley Boys" such as yourself. NICE! I suppose that next I’ll be a “Jack” Mormon because there is no other explanation for my willingness to point out your flawed and ridiculous arguments and that BYU is not God’s gift to college football.

DO YOUR RESEARCH!!!!!

Miss St. that team that BYU beat by a resounding 4 points was 3-8 (2-6 SEC). All of the sudden TCU is a powerhouse? Again, I say typical of the BYU fan base that annoys the hell out me. You have yet to validate your points on BYU’s supposed dominance with examples of QUALITY teams. Just because MISS ST. was decent in years past, doesn’t make them good when BYU barely beat them. Just because a team in a BCS conference, doesn’t make them a quality team or opponent. (i.e. Baylor or UT back in the late eighties)

Furthermore, not to take away from App. St., but Michigan last year sucked. App. St deserved the win and I loved every minute of it.

Last I heard WAC is better than the MWC based upon recent BCS game appearances, and an undefeated record. That is……….based on your logic. Furthermore stop making excuses for every BYU loss and how if BYU had only defeated BC then BYU would have crashed the BCS party. Every year it a new excuse! YOU’RE A BROKEN RECORD!

Also, You have yet to reply to WhooTex’s response to your weak examples of teams defeated by BYU damn near twenty years ago. Then you get into an argument about BYU’s academia? I’m still waiting for you to pull out the religion card. (that BYU doesn't get respect because it's a religious institution) I heard that one a million times. Come on….

Hagy.. did you wake up with your sarcasm meter broken?.. or has your avid defense of BYU so blinded you to subtle shades of wit?

BYUhorn,

I see where you are coming from. I've always thought that Utah and BYU would be a cool move for the Pac 10. Cali schools plus two teams each from: AZ, WA, OR & UT. Kind of a nice balance to get to 12 teams.

There is no question that if BYU moved to the Pac 10 (with all the benefits of the Pac 10) then BYU would absolutely lock down the LDS talent, unfortuately, there are not many guys on Rivals 100 who are LDS, which gets to my point. There are not many non-lds guys, I'm guessing, in the Rivals 100 who would "fit in" at BYU. I think Provo is great, but let's be honest about demographics and cultural differences.

On a given day BYU can beat nearly anyone in football. However, in my opinion, one cannot understate the difficulty of grinding through a BCS conference schedule. Week in and week out you play teams with quality talent. If you're not playing well you can lose, easily. It's a significant step up from playing MWC teams week in and week out, which is why I think Tech is a good equivalent for BYU. You have to be really really good to not lose 4 games a year in a BCS conference.

Well stated Hagy....I think this is pretty much an endless debate that we may never know who's right or wrong. Either way it's fun to talk about.

I'm completely w/ you SWC.Lives.On. I believe BYU could be a good team in a BCS conference, it may take a while. Mendenhall is good coach, who will be there a while, who I think is doing a great job putting BYU back on the mid-major map.

I don't hate BYU, I just think the argument is always the same, from BYU fans (or the majority I should say) after growing up a Mormon and living in Utah and graduating from BYU. However, I am a Ute fan in disguise according to others.
