Introducing this year's non-BCS darling

some on here may not agree but, BYU is a BCS caliber program in a mid-major conference. They could bust the BCS this year, but next year they'll be even better and could possibly contend for the 2009 National Title, 25 years after winning their first one.

Won their first title? How about had it freaking gift wrap by playing in a ******** conference and then beating a 6-6 Michigan team in a less than resounding fashion?

Hell, you people are the reason the BCS even freaking exists and the college football gods will darn well make sure that it never happens again.

The game at Washington will be no joke, and as for rematching with UCLA, the performance last year didn't quite cut it, and they will be (possibly) better this year. Otherwise, whaddaya got?

Meh. Play somebody.

so it should be counted against them for beating everyone on their schedule? Including going to #4 or 5 Pittsburg and nocking them off at their place? They may have had to play a so-so Michigan team, but they were the only undefeated team and was more deserving than any other team. They went on to destroy Washington 31-3 the following year, who some claimed deserved it but didn't.

It's a mythical championshp just like the BCS championships are mythical champs today, but they deserved it. It can't be held against them IMO.

1. the BCS is a joke of an anti-trust system for the cartel (all BCS conferences). Hell our 1996 team that beat a #3 ranked aTm team and K-State in the Cotton Bowl was considered to be our best. Had they not lost to Washington that year they would have played for it all. To say that BYU didn't deserve to play for it in both those years is ludicrous. Who can say they weren't the best team in 1984? Nobody.

2. Don't underestimate BYU's defense. They have never been known to have a good defense until 2006. This may be our fastest D ever.

3. Playing at Washington will be tough no doubt, but that will be the toughest part. Locker is an average passer and will be one dimensional with the losses of his WRs this last year as well as their top RB. We play Air Force every year, so I am confident that we can defend Locker.

4. In our first matchup with UCLA, we dominated in pretty much every offensive statistic except the points. Our QB, had only 1 game experience. Not to mention some very questionalbe calls by Pac 10 refs. In the second game the real score should have been 17-9 had our OC not decided to hand the ball off at our own 5 with 13 seconds left in the half, in which he fumbled setting up a gifted TD.

Don't forget that UCLA will be in rebuilding mode and they have to come to Provo, which is a very tough place to play (we upset #1 Miami in 91, beat Penn State in 94, beat #3 aTm in 96 and won our first game vs the Longhorns here in 87).

6. Don't forget that in 2006 we went on the road and had the game one at Boston College and later manhandled Oregon. Then in 2007 we manhandled Arizona at Home with our Defense.

Nevertheless, I'm real nervous and hope we can go through the season unscathed and then do the same in 2009 to make a run at the National Championship.

Do we really give much credit to beating washington? They are 5-15 in their last 20 games. Washington would compete with Baylor for the cellar in the B12

You seem to be struggling with the misapprehension that where a team is ranked when you beat them automatically proves you have beaten a good team. This is not the case. Let me see if I can help you:

Ah yes, that fine Pitt team that finished the season 3-7-1? Impressive use of a victory not even in the year to justify your title.

UW lost 1 game and that was at USC to a 9-3 Trojans team that played 8 teams ranked in the Top 20 that year and beat the Big 10 Champ Ohio State in the Rose Bowl.

The biggest sin the Dawgs had was that they didn't win their conference outright and beat OU and Switzer in the Orange Bowl which on this board is more than enough justification for their title.

Don't you have Danny Ainge highlights to watch to convince yourself you were once a basketball power as well?

An NFL team could play 12 average to poor college teams and people would claim that proves they can't possibly be the best team.

"An NFL team could play 12 average to poor college teams and people would claim that proves they can't possibly be the best team. "

I realize I am not very smart, but what the heck does this mean and how does it apply to this situation?

I'm confused as to why this is even a thread. Who gives a **** about BYU? We are Texas. BYU is not even in a conference that matters, little lone the Big 12. Why a Cougar fan would come to a UT board and start a debate is beyond me.

Cougar Blue has about 25 posts. Cougar Blue shows up in the off season and announces BYU as the next non-BSC team to watch. Next month Cougar Blue will be back to say that the darkhorse in the Heisman race is the BYU quarterback.

My guess is that 1) Cougar Blue has made similar posts on many other football forums and 2) Cougar Blue is an intern in the BYU sports information department.

At the risk of further hijacking this thread, I have to mention that the 1984 BYU team has always been the worst MNC during the past 40+ years.
1984 BYU is to the MNC, what Gino Torreta is to the Heisman Trophy.

Can't blame BYU for the system that forced them to go to a bowl that faced them against a 6-6 Michigan team. At least now they would go to a BCS bowl and have a shot at playing someon.

Your right. At that time BYU was locked into the Holiday Bowl. What is interesting though is the fact that UW was penalized in the bowls for tying for their conference title, but not playing in the Rose Bowl.

National Coverage had just started in the mid 80's, but it was no where near what it is today and I truly think that the lack of national exposure hurt UW and benefited BYU.

First of all, don't be fooled by my username or the fact that I have only posted a couple of responses on this site. I attended BYU but bleed burnt orange and I've visited this site everyday for the past 5-6 years. I'm proud of the fact that I went to a good school, but even more proud of being a 5th generation Texan and rabid longhorn fan since I was old enough to hold a football.

Cougar Blue - you are the reason I never could stand the BYU fanbase. You are a prime example of the lack of football IQ that BYU fans as a whole suffer from if not worse. Usually I can always count on after the third or fourth game of the season after BYU has beaten teams like Montana St., Wyoming, New Mexico and Tulsa and all the like, to begin hearing talk about BYU running the table and busting the BCS. "This is BYU's year"

However, I can see after two "descent" years BYU fans are as DELUSIONAL as ever...... already getting riled up and claiming a possible National Championship before the season(s) have begun.

Then when objectively challenged, you bring up Pitt, A&M Texas teams 10 to 20 years ago w/o so much as even doing your research to see where those teams finished, as already pointed out. You logic is flawed and you make everyone from BYU look stupid.

BYU, just like any "descent" Non-BCS team, like a Boise St. can win against a BCS team on a good day. But BYU and all the rest has no capacity as far as depth to even compete in a BCS league, with the exception of maybe the BIg East(although WVU spanked UO), week in and week out. Teams who compete against strong competition every week, not just one or twice at the beginning and end of a season is what makes a team deserving of the "Mythical National Championship". Until BYU gets the balls to join an elite conference and prove every week that they're legit, then it would be best to keep your delusional opinions and gripes to yourself and do your research before you come on a board such as this and try and argue with fans who actually know & "watch" college football, not just the team they're rooting for and an occasional glimpse at the scoreboard and a teams ranking while you singing "Rise and Shout the Cougars are Out...RA RA RA!"

Cougar Blue, congratulations, you win the award for most irrelevant guest to Horn Fans!

I love Texas. I hate A&M and OU. I have feelings of respect and disdain for schools like USC, Ohio St., LSU, and Florida. I'm even a little bit interested in Boise St.

I do not, however, give a flying **** about Brigham ******* Young University. What a ******* waste of Division 1.

Why the hate for BYU? They are a good program. Anybody care to recall what happened the last two times we played them?

BYU is every bit as good as any of the other teams in the Big 12 outside of Texas and OU. Year to year that might change but I would without question put them in the top half of any BCS conference.

First of all, no they're not. They may look comparable in any single game, but put them in the Big 12 facing talent each and every week and they'll jockey with Baylor for doormat of the Conference.

Second, I don't think there's any hate. It's just surprise that someone from BYU would come over here running their mouth. I mean, it's BYU. Who cares about BYU? Who even thinks about BYU? Their only relevance is as an obscure trivia answer.

Wildcat. Take the totally subjective out and just look at some facts. BYU is 9-3 against B12 teams since 1980. Inclouded in that record is 3-0 against us and OU. Last time BYU played UT BYU won 47-6. BYU is not in our class, but I don't think you can point to anything objective that would suggest that they woudl be at the bottom of a BCS conference. Clearly it's harder to play BCS teams every week, but they would not go from 10-2 to 2-10. No way. They consistently beat the BCS teams they play. Not all of them but certainly their fair share.
