Injuries and Iowa State on the road

I have not seen anything on Eagles that indicates he would not go to Iowa State to play. Texas needs Jake Smith too but I think this will be more Straight Ahead running game so we really need the offensive line and the defensive line as usual to win their battles.

Eagles is listed as a starter at the ZWR on the Depth Chart for ISU. Jake Smith is second team at HWR.

All this unseasonably cold weather and big wind for football games up on the plains, reminds me of some nasty upsets we've suffered when playing at Tech. We're usually a much better team, but when the temperature drops into the 30s and the wind whips up on the plains, strange things have been known to happen.

It sounds like the wind won't be too bad on Saturday, and ISU is probably more pass-happy than we are (ISU 323 yds passing per game / 156 yards rushing per game). It shouldn't matter too much. Our equipment guys should have all the cold weather gear ready to go.

Let's just hope Jack Trice Stadium isn't Jack Ice Stadium on Saturday (or would that be Jack Frost...?).

Glad to see some (non-overtly hostile) ISU fans posting on these boards by the way.
The ground is already frozen in Iowa, but they may have a tarp on the field and they may be blowing warm air under it. I am worried about field conditions. Normally the natural grass field at Jack Trice wins awards for the best grass field in the country. But these last two years the weather has been terrible and the field was in bad shape late in the season. This year has also been a crappy weather year and I don't think the field ever fully recovered. With the cold weather already invading Ames, I'm worried about the condition of the field. I saw some rough looking NFL fields last Sunday.

I hope this year is the last of this bad weather trend. I love real grass and would hate for them give up and replace it with field turf. But if it doesn't get back to normal next year, I fear the days of real grass are numbered.

I also much prefer natural grass fields. Our equipment managers better bring a few different types of cleats for Longhorn players--you never know what will work best on a field in questionable condition.

Jake Smith is second team at HWR.
That is where jake belongs. DD is the most productive WR we have. He is the biggest threat to get open and get into the end zone on any given play. I hope jake's head isn't too big, and that he can accept that he is playing behind a better player; and that his time will come, that he will be better next year, and still better the next.

His time as a star is coming. He will have great QB's to work with his entire tenure here. Look at the pipeline of who is coming. WR's should be very happy.

If aTm was playing ISU in this weather, they'd be accusing ISU of watering down the field the night before and turning it into ice.

It will be a challenge to stop (or slow down) Purdy, even in crummy field conditions.

Then again, the ISU page says he's from Gilbert, Ariz, so he's probably not very good in cold weather. :smokin::rolleyes1::smh:

Yeah, Gilbert is just south of Phoenix. Purdy played HS ball in dry weather with November daytime temps in the 80's and in the 70's at night. We're in Tucson, and I wear t-shirts and either gym shorts or short pants if I'm outside, even at night. But, the cold alone won't stop him. Our D better come ready to play and knock the crap out of their O.

Psyclone and other ISU lurkers, let me hear your thoughts on this matchup. Here's how I see it:

I think for us (UT), it's mostly about keeping Purdy in check. Our rushing defense is pretty decent at this point in the season. Our pass defense could still use a lot of work. ISU is strong in passing and pedestrian at the running game (I think). So it's strength on weakness (UT strong rush defense v. ISU weak rushing game) and weakness on strength (UT weak passing D v. Purdy's/ISU's strong passing attack). Our (UT) DBs have been like a hospital wing this season. Fortunately, the health of some of our better coverage men is finally good, and they'll be tested. I'd expect some press coverage, mixed in with our usual grab bag of blitzes, and unorthodox looks. Not sure how the cold and possible wind will play into this. Our team is not used to cold weather.

On O, I understand you (ISU) had some problems with Northern Iowa's dual threat QB, so that could bode well for Sam Ehlinger and the Horns O. We'll try to run the ball on you with both our RBs (led by Ingram) and Sam, our QB who does a good Tim Tebow imitation on the field and will sometimes plant your DBs on the turf (no kidding). We take plenty of risks--some of them warranted--including frequent trick plays.

Oh yeah, almost forgot: Our coach is a certified genius and he has a really great binder that he gets his play calls from.

Whittington should have been put on a shelf for this year...Herman said he is having pain....scar tissue.....etc, etc.... Gonna mess the kid up and he will end up useless if they aren't careful.....

I'm a little concerned about the health of our defense. Campbell never reveals anything. Some of the guys play hurt and are not 100%. Our defense is pretty good, but only when they are healthy.

I'm also concerned about our offensive line against your defense. If we aren't overmatched there, I feel pretty good about us being able to move the ball. We have developed a running game behind true freshman Breece Hall, although for some reason we decided not to run the ball against OSU and it cost us. Against Oklahoma our second back had some good runs also. It took a little while to overcome the loss of David Montgomery, but I think our running game is pretty good now. Whether it's good enough against Texas or not, we will see.

I met Mensa when he coached at Iowa State. I could tell right away that Ames was not a fit for his wife. Many fans weren't all that impressed with him as offensive coordinator, but that may have been because he wasn't allowed to run his offense. Or maybe he just didn't have the talent. You could tell he was destined for greater things though. I don't know what Urban Meyer saw in him to pluck him from ISU, but I guess that is what makes Urban an elite coach. It's fun seeing him heading up a Big 12 team.

I have no idea what to expect in our game. It's unseasonably cold up here. And snowing already this year. Ridiculous. I just hope the playing conditions are good and we get a good game out of it.

Interesting he was OC for one of ISU victories over UT. I think the new regime is quite new to him and separated by over a decade. Texas did well to control hte game last year, but Montgomery was out for the first half.

I was aware you had a bunch of guys hurt, but thought you were getting them back.

We are, but we lost a couple of more; our starting TE and Punter. A couple we have already had back are nursing injuries like our Senior WR still has hamstring issues.

These hamstring issues for Johnson seem chronic. Is it just him, strength and conditioning issues, not stretching properly, hydration, etc. etc... ? This hamstring issue along with him not lighting a huge fire this season will prevent him from being drafted. It also sucks that Herman has not played him and his brother at the same time in the offense, when he had ample opportunity since his brother looked tough running the ball the couple of plays he got when Collin was out hurt. He runs as tough as any of the other backs and is supposed to have break-away speed.

Only one reason he has not lighted a fire (in your eyes) is that he has not had enough throws. The combo of he and Dev should be lighting up everyone we play, but you have to throw him the darn ball.
