Looking at the stats for pitchers after 4 games, right now the pitchers to watch are:

Gordon (this is a given) 0.00 ERA
Duplantier
LBJ
Shaw
Lummus
Stehle
Moorehouse
Adding Tole

Stehle and Moorehouse, obvious here, we need them to step up and be solid starters, we need probably 5-6 innings out of each no matter who they face, minimum. If they can get to 6 then LBJ, Shaw and Duplantier can get us through 9, anything past 6 would be a blessing for the bullpen.

Shaw and Lummus have limited action but I was watching Shaw in the last game and he was hitting very tight spots, it was impressive. He keeps it up, he's going to find himself in a bigger role as he earns confidence from the staff. Would like to see more from Lummus and Tole, still early.

Curious to see what role Duplantier, LBJ and Shaw get going forward, their ERA is looking ok to great, Duplantier and LBJ could supplant a weekend starter if Stehle and or Moorehouse falter. I think they (Stehle and Moorehouse) can both contribute and I don't think they are out of starting roles just yet, we NEED them to get it figured out. If Stehle and Moorehouse do figure it out, then we have our relievers and closers figured out too. If not, I don't want to think about it, cause if LBJ and Duplantier move to weekend starters, would put tremendous stress on our bullpen.

Hurley - i pegged him for a starter, so I missed that one. He's not fooling batters right now, he needs to find a way to do that and I think he will but he needs more innings. I think he's serviceable and can fill in as a reliever but I would like to see more movement on his pitches and fewer hits/runs from him.

Stuart - is looking slightly better than Hurley at the moment. I was expecting him to contribute more already but he is similar to Hurley, he's allowing a few too many runs but there is small sample size on him right now.

Minchey, O'Banan, Grubbs, Howard, and even Whitehead - Would like to see these guys get an inning but we also don't have as many innings to give, taking into the fact we still have so many that are currently close to contributing that need innings.

Me too.

At the worst, Hurley will make a solid enough middle reliever who can eat a lot of innings. He was a quality starter at USC, and PAC baseball isn't all that far behind the Big 12 (Stanford, UCLA, Oregon St, Oregon,...).

"Big Ben" Seiler
6'6"
245 lbs

LHP

Grad transfer from Sienna.

Strikeout pitcher. Averages well over 1 strikeout per inning.

Holds the NCAA (last season) record with 19 strikeouts in one game, vs. Niagara. Had a 16 strikeout game vs. St. Peters.

Got hit hard by Auburn.

Here's a scouting report from Lindsay Crosby, the "Big Baseball Guy" on Twitter. Click his link:

(not a real big heat thrower despite his size. Sounds like his curve and slider get a lot of his numerous strikeouts)

Dude gets a lot of strikeouts, but Auburn drilled him with hits. Disciplined batting may carry the day.

Siena's Seiler sets NCAA season-high with 19 strikeouts vs. Niagara

Agree on Whitehead (put him in to bat--something he's quite good at...) and O'Banan (give him a few mid week innings against crappy teams at first to see how he'll do).
I have a bit of a different opinion on Minchey, and especially Grubbs.

Minchey--the tv producer (who gets his info from coaches/program people talking to him before the game; or more likely coaches talking with the broadcast booth guys) had Minchey listed up on the board with Gordon, Morehouse, and LBJ as a potential weekend starter. This guy is the wonder-boy. Home-schooled. Real young. Only played in private leagues. Was on nobody's radar until we "found" him. We have no idea how he'll do in an actual college game, but his stuff is smokin' and the coaches seem to love him.

Grubbs--BAMF on the mound. Grubbs will be our best pitcher if he gets the chance.

If Grubbs and Minchey are that good, they should get on the mound then.

Looks like it’s:

Fri: Gordon vs Seiler
Sat: Morehouse vs Manase
Sun: TBD

maybe Stehle already lost his starting spot?

Texas baseball's Tuesday romp has given Longhorns some new confidence

"O’Dowd will probably serve as a pivotal piece in Pierce’s expected return to small ball. The former Vanderbilt Commodore boasts a steady bat in the middle of the order and should move speedier athletes such as outfielders Eric Kennedy, Dylan Campbell and Porter Brown around the basepaths.

“He’s seeing the ball well,” Pierce said Tuesday. “He’s a leader in the clubhouse, (and) he’s a leader on the field.”

Also of interest is the fact that O'Dowd's Dad was the GM of the Colorado Rockies. Now he runs a baseball technology company in Austin with Jack's brother.

Jack's father, Dan, and older brother, Chris, run a tech company out of Austin called Win Reality. Win Reality allows baseball and softball hitters a chance to train and improve their hitting via virtual reality. The company has grown quickly and has been running commercials on MLB Network.

Indiana is an average D1 team (think Kansas State or maybe West Virginia at best). But they do have good power hitting, and they return 8 starters.

"However, Texas could just as easily get caught in an offensive shootout with Indiana at some point during the weekend. The Hoosiers are expected to go yard plenty this season, with All-Big Ten sluggers Carter Mathison and Matthew Ellis returning in hopes of breaking the team's single-season home run record again in 2023. Big 12 Baseball Preview: Round Rock Classic Headlines Weekend

INDIANA AT TEXAS
"Texas finally got their first win of the season this week against Corpus Christi A&M. Unfortunately they won’t get a team like that coming into Austin this weekend. Indiana has a veteran team that returns eight starters from last season. The Hoosiers bring in plenty of experience which is something the young Longhorns don’t have. However, Indiana does have pitching issues with their starting rotation. I know Lucas Gorgon will get a quality start for Texas but who else can step up? That’s what I want to see."

Seti Manase

Transfer from Tacoma CC

West Region pitcher of the year for Junior Colleges

Samoan dude from a military family.

jUNIOR COLLEGE STATS
1.69 ERA (some sources say 1.85)
averages more than 1 strikeout per inning
(in community college)
Fastball in the mid to upper 80s.
Good movement on his breaking stuff.

Manase got Indiana's only win in 3 game series with Auburn with only 1 inning or work. Now IU is trying Manase out as a starter.

Looks like Manase might actually be Indiana's best pitcher (either Manase or Sinnard), but he will start game 2, while Big Ben Seiler will start game 1. This could be a nice test matchup for Zane Morehouse. Don't expect Manase to go too long, even if he's doing well. This guy started the year as a closer.

Fastball sits in the mid-80s, hitting the upper 80s. Throws good breaking stuff and a tricky changeup. Had an impressive Junior College baseball career.

"Seti Manase (Puyallup, WA / Graham-Kapowsin HS). Manase shows a mid to upper 80's fastball with quality secondary pitches."

"JUCO transfer RHP Seti Manase pitched the 9th in our win over Auburn and mowed them down in order in a non-save opportunity for a good start to his Hoosier career. Now we will see how he does as a starter."

"Seti Manase has been selected as the Tacoma Community College Male Athlete of the Year. Seti has had tremendous success this year on and off the baseball field. Recently awarded the Most Valuable Player by the NWAC's West Region, Seti leads the Titan's pitching staff with 9-2 record and 1.85 earned run average, striking out 84 batters while only walking 8. :yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes:
One of the best pitchers in the Northwest Athletic Conference, Seti led the TCC Baseball team as they played in the NWAC championships over Memorial Day weekend. Seti will graduate this spring and is currently being recruited by a number of NCAA Division I schools across the nation. Outside of TCC, Seti comes from a military family and is very involved in his church. Titan Head Baseball Coach Ryan Mummert describes him as “one of the nicest humans you will meet.”

Seti Manase will be on the mound in IU's home opener tomorrow...

Craig Yoho

Fastball in the 90s with some movement, with an outstanding changeup, and a decent curve.

One of IU's "go-to" relievers.

Pitched 2 innings vs. Miami (Ohio) giving up 0 runs, while throwing 5 strikeouts. Likes to come up high in the zone (and high out of the zone) for strikeouts.

Has had injury problems for most of his college career.

Was primarily recruited as a shortstop.

Started his college baseball career at UH. Promptly transferred to IU.

"An outstanding changeup, unique fastball property and a nice breaking ball all were keys to Yoho’s success throughout the evening, Mercer said, and he managed the game “really well.”

See quick video below---Check out this left to right movement at the plate (thrown by a RHP). Could this be a Fernando Valenzuela-type screwball??? Or just a fastball that has some really good (and weird) movement??? Or just an optical illusion caused by the camera angle???
(my "baseball eye" is often not sophisticated enough to determine what a pitch was when it moves in unexpected ways. Heck, sometimes I even have a difficult time distinguishing between a curve ball and a slider...)

Whatever it is, I hope we don't see much of that pitch...

That 2nd Hoosier batter is Jessee. He may be the best batter in the Big 10. Real good ball player. Geno struck him out in the 1st.

Big Ben strikes out Brown on a curve ball low, then gets a really nice fielding gift from his SS. No runs.

Geno got robbed on a strike call. Put a few men on base.

But worked his way out of it. No runs through 2 for Gordon and the Texas D.

When he really needed a strikeout with men on base, Gordon went to his changeup.

This is a smart pitcher. He’s both a Rembrandt and an Einstein.

Nothing doing on offense yet through 2. 1 hit by us. Big Ben Seiler of IU is handling our batters like Geno is handling theirs.

Infield hit. It rolled past Gordon and Jack couldn't charge up fast enough to get the out. It wasn't bad fielding or poor placement of the D by the Coach. Luck just favored the Hoosiers there.

ANOTHER STRIKEOUT FOR GORDON!!!

No runs against Lucas "Geno" Gordon through 3 innings.

Gordon's pitch count is getting up there though.
