I'm happy for Kevin Garnett

KG asphyxiated the Lakers' in the 2nd quarter by placing his foot firmly on their throat and then along with Rondo and Allen ripped out their heart for good measure.

yes he did.

Point is, he did it not when the game was on the line, but in a much less pressure situation. ANYTIME the pressure has been on in the 4th quarter he faltered. That is my only point.

Garnett may be a stark raving lunatic, but if hugging Bill Russell and telling him "I hope we made you proud" is indicative of the behavior at a typical "10th grade rap party," then they must be pretty genteel affairs.

no, but he also never had the label of a guy that couldn't finish in the 4th quarter of the big game. This specifically has been the knock on KG.

I never said someone had to score 40 pts in a playoff game to not be considered overrated

Interesting discussion. Just for shits and giggles, I looked up career playoff stats for Duncan and Garnett:

Duncan
20.2 points per game (#15 all time)
14.5 rebounds per game (#2 all time)
3.3 assists per game (#32 all time)
.449 field goal % (#29 all time)
2.06 blocks per game (#6 all time)
.88 steals per game (#42 all time)

Garnett
20.4 points per game (#14 all time)
10.5 rebounds per game (#8 all time)
3.3 assists per game (#32 all time)
.495 field goal % (#14 all time)
1.12 blocks per game (#22 all time)
1.35 steals per game (#14 all time)

Pretty good numbers for both players. The LinkThe Link

The simple fact is that the second after Garnett signed with the Celtics the entire team began to believe they could win & win big. Then they spent the off-season, scrimmages, 82 regular season games, the playoffs & the finals learning the one undeniable truth about KG's game: he never quits. He never takes a play off. He may not always hit an open jumper & his low post game--like David Robinson's--is more dependent upon speed & timing than bulk & power, but he never stops hustling & doesn't let a missed shot prevent him from gathering a tough rebound or gaining defensive position. His speed down court repeatedly neutralized fast break opportunities from the opposition.

Effort. Desire. Commitment. Intensity. Anyone who doesn't think that the rest of the Celtics didn't learn invaluable lessons from Garnett throughout the 82 game season & that they didn't benefit from his "every second of every game" approach during their march towards the championships is watching something other than basketball.

Here's a bit of contrast for the "he didn't deliver points in the 4th quarter" crowd. Before game 7 in '84 Cedric freakin' Maxwell told the rest of the Celtics "climb on my back, boys." He delivered a 24-8-8 game. So by the logic of some Cornbread's a more "clutch" performer & obviously has a better legacy than Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Dennis Johnson, Robert Parrish & Danny Ainge.

To the poster who commented on KG's discussion with Bill Russell:

You picked the one coherent statement Garnett made to Russell during their entire hug-versation. The remainder of Garnett's jam session with Russell consisted of Garnett screaming into Russell's ear: "I Got Mine. I Got Mine. I Got MIne..."

For the record: I am a Spurs fan. And, I rooted like hell for Boston in this series.

if any of the big 3 are not there, obviously Celts don't win it all. You also have to give a lot of credit to Posey , Perkins and Rondo.

People said Laker bench was so much better, they were wrong.

Nobody's arguing that Garnett isn't crazy; I just think it's unfair to label his post-game behavior as classless.

As for his hug-versation with Russell, it may make a little morse sense in its full context:

in 2003 Parker was a very good player and held up very nicely vs. Jason Kidd. Malik Rose and Stephen Jackson (now averaging 20ppg in the NBA) were good players who had major minutes. Then you had David Robinson who closed out his career with 13pts and 17rebs. Manu off the bench with SteveSmith. The 2003 club was better off the bench and at guard but worse off at the frontline with an older DavidR, no Will Perdue, a same Malik Rose and an older Kevin Willis. I'd say 2003 was more talented than 1999.

Who did Minnesota have in 2003?

KG, Wally S, Anthony Peeler, Troy Hudson, Joe Smith, Rod Strickland (36), Gary Trent, Kendall Gill, Rasho Nestrovic. A very soft team!! I'd say the Spurs had a better team with both KG and TD out of the equation.

Wow. I am just shocked by the hatred for Garnett. Like I said before, the guy never complained in Minnesota and played his tail off. He plays with a lot of emotion and we have all watched him grow up over the years. He is a bonafide stud.

Anyone who says he wasn't a factor in this series didn't watch it. He had two horrible games, but he was stout defensively in the others. In fact, he was GREAT defensively and offensively in two of them. Garnett is a player.

Parker minutes vs. Nets 2003

40, 41, 43, 31, 33, 24

points

16, 21, 26, 3, 14, 4

4 good games, 2 bad ones. Led Spurs in scoring twice, TD the other 4. Still a very good player in 2003 and arguably top 5-7 at his position that year.
