Ike Will Threaten Texas-Arkansas

They'd better not reschedule it for the 27th - I've specifically planned a weekend getaway for that day since it's the one time I won't be missing a UT game.

Thankfully, the number of times in my lifetime that a hurricane has brought enough wind and rain to Austin that a football game would need to be postponed is 0.

Not to mention the traffic problems created for those of us who don't live in Austin but are coming for the game.

Maybe the only game I attend this year and IKE comes along. I got a bad feeling about this storm and this game

Bet Arkansas is praying for divine intervention...they'd love to cancel getting embarrassed on national TV to an old rival. Sure hope Ike stall long enough to get the game in.

Well, postponing would only benefit Arkansas so you are correct there. Playing Bama before Texas would definitely give a young team some much needed time on the field.

But if, or when, this out matched team gets "embarrassed on national TV", it will probably help you forget what happened the last time a team from Arkansas was part of an embarrassment in Austin on national tv.

Sucks, I will have to come in for the game from out of town. Hope they can get an idea before the game, I don't wanna have to battle evac. traffic on the way back up to DFW after the game.

Don't be surprised if Arkansas is "unable" to reschedule.

Considering their first 4 opponents are ranked no lower than 11th in the AP poll.......

Crap. Since Ike is currently aimed directly at me I was hoping that I could come up as early as Thursday!

the 27th just won't work. there are no hotels. (cue the trailer/mobile home jokes)

every hotel in Austin area will have very limited vacancy IF ANY.

best bet is to move this game to Thursday/Friday night.

landfall in corpus would give us a hell of a storm in central Texas. it isn't the hard rain and wind that would stop the game, just the lightning and possible tornados that WILL spawn from the hurricane.

luckily the corpus area isn't too populated. i'm not too worried about Texas highways (with the exception of 37) being one way only.

move the game to thursday night or push it back to a certain december date which will live in infamous arkie history. abc/espn can run with the greatest game story. nixon. yay.

i can't believe you people. i'd rather be in austin with a hurricane approaching than deal with thousands of inbread arky fucks roaming the streets.

Ike will not affect our game. It's expected to make landfall in Corpus right around kickoff. That means it wouldn't affect Austin weather until Sat. night at the earliest, and even that will likely mean only moderate thunderstorms.

Current Austin weather forecast just calls for a 40-50% chance of rain Saturday afternoon/night.

So I guess other teams in the South that moved up/changed locations due to Gustav didn't have any upset season ticket holders? C'mon peole, think about someone besides yourself once in awhile.

Those schools were in the direct line of fire of Gustav(or so they thought). We are not in the direct line of fire of Ike. We could get high winds and rain (see Mizzou game '96).

The only way we should be affected is if Houston evacuates and the University is part of the evacuation plan.

Most models have it moving north once it hits land. The dots are 12 hours apart so you can see that Austin may be right in the middle of everything.

I just posted this over in West Mall.
Dr. Masters wunderground blog was just updated. He's a pretty reliable met and tries to post reasonable predictions. He's giving Ike a 50% chance of hitting Texas a CAT 3 or higher. Here's the link:

The next 18 to 24 hours will give us a better idea of when, where and how strong.

However, if you live along or near the coast from Corpus to Galveston, you should be rushing to make preparations now. For those up the coast to LA, you should keep a watch as well. Ike could swing a bit more north before it's all said and done.

Given the scenario of a major cane hitting the coast Friday or Saturday, my guess is that UT will cancel the football game. They'll probably wait until tomorrow afternoon or night to make the final decision, but it will be the right one if current projections hold up.
Millions of people will be affected and the focus of the state should be on helping them and preparing for what could be our worst disaster since Carla.

TexPete,
depending on Ike's strength and speed, Austin could easily experience tropical force winds, if not higher. For instance, if Ike hit around Corpus as a CAT 3 and moved NW at 15 mph, its tropical force wind field, which extends 150+ miles, would already be reaching San Antonio. Austin would be experiencing tropical force winds only a few hours later. In a worst case scenario, Austin could experience CAT 1 or even CAT 2 winds if Ike moved fast enough. This doesn't even take into account the higher gusts that would occur within the thunderstorms.
