If you love to eat, what city would do it for you?

In Texas, I would put Houston easily at number 1... last night, I had Bosnian (delicious, really). This past weekend, we visited a great new restaurant called Voice. Had Pakistani last week... you name it. You can find it here.

Otherwise, if it weren't for the cost, London has an immense variety. Rome is delicious on so many counts as is Bologna and I would definitely include Buenos Aires.

Husker....Chains in Houston? You mean they don't have Applebee's, TGIFs or Bennigan's and their ilk in NY and SF? Really?

We have excellent local establishments.

In the US, NYC is the best city overall for food. If you don't agree your either:

1) Havn't lived in NYC, or lived here long enough.
2) Don't have the palate to appreciate good food.

There are definitely cuisine (TexMex and vietnamese) that I miss from Texas. But, as far as fine dining and overall quality, only Paris can compete with NYC.

San Francisco
Paris
Aspen
Buenos Aires
NYC
San Deigo/Del Mar/La Jolla
San Antonio
Boston
Carmel
Florence
Austin
Houston
Washington DC/Alexandria/Baltimore
Ft. Worth
Vail/Beaver Creek

Shhh, it's a secret. Everybody does not need to know the gASTRONOMICAL joys of Corpus!!!

I feel dirty.

Ive been to San Fran many times and I have been disappointed numerous times although I would put them #1 for asian and asian fusion.

Vegas is awesome because every major chef in the nation has a satellite restaurant there. Vegas is technically #1 based upon sheer volume, quality, and variety but it is kind of a cheat city because all of the greatness comes from upscale restaurants only.

The LA area has some awesome retaurants, but I'm also throwing in the Newport/Laguna Beach area.

I've been disappointed in a lot of New York restaurants that receive a lot of hype.

Chicago is a personal favorite of mine, Ive never had a bad meal anywhere.

I would put Houston up with any city on the list.

The only international city I have spent a lot of time in is Buenos Aires. Unbelieveable food at the places I went. Best steak I have ever had at one place.

haven't done much world traveling but i have been to Vegas, NYC, diff parts of Cali, Miami and lived in houston, austin and San Antonio.

NO ONE has the mexican food that san antonio does... it just doesn't come close, and this is coming from a person who was born raised and doesn't particularly care for the city... couldn't wait to get out. That said, while they have the market on TexMex... that's about it.

after that...
NYC
Houston
Vegas

you can find anything to eat in NYC, in Vegas so long as you do your own searching and try not to get caught up in the big names you'll find good food and at reasonable prices too. authenticity is a little easier to find in houston though because of the way the city is arranged. Want asian food... run around the harwin area, you'll find what you're looking for, the texmex leaves something to be desired but only if you know better, italian... well it's already been said, that's an easy one. The restaurants seem to be endless in this city... so much so i'm tempted to put it above NYC... but not quite.

It's not all in the same area, but the overall options available in LA surpass other places I've been to. It's got strong asian and mexican influences, including very authentic places.

I liked San Francisco, NYC, and Paris as well, but I probably need to spend more time in these places. Food in Europe is an amazing experience, but I would always miss things like mexican and bbq.

Houston is tops in Texas. Much more affordable than other big cities, too.

I'm not including price as a factor. If that's the case, bye bye to most of my top 5.

I think Houston has as much range as anyone, but obviously LA has what Houston has in spades.

NYC, NO, Vegas, their high end is probably ahead of Houston, but if we talk tex mex, then they're behind.

Austin does have crappy Chinese.

In terms of cuisine, I don't think I would put Austin anywhere near Houston. Austin, with all its good merits, is by no means a culinary capital.

you would think with as many asians that have moved to austin you could find some decent food but you just can't.

My boyfriend is constantly talking about how much Houston sucks and one of the reasons: the food. He thinks the food isn't that great, as well as there isn't enough variety. He once told me that "there are no Ethiopian restaurants" here so I did a quick search and found at least 3.
I'm not a big Houston lover (ok, ok I am. It still is in Texas after all), but the food here ain't bad.

Athens
Hong Kong
Cairo, Egypt not Illinois
San Antonio: best in Texas
Seattle which has moved ahead of L.A.,San Francisco and Vancouver

Don't know how SA is the best in Texas. Also, I wish Austin was a little more like Texas, but I don't want to derail this thread.

I liked the food and restaurants in Lyon better than Paris. New Orleans is also at the top of my list. In Texas, Dallas beats Houston when it comes to high-end restaurants, but Austin is a favorite of mine because I would be perfectly happy to eat Tex Mex and barbecue every day, and Austin and the surrounding towns have the best combination of the two.

I like the food in New Orleans, but it lacks variety. If I was eating Cajun or Soul Food, it would be number one, but two genres out of 100s doesn't make you king.

I'd say NYC is the overall best, but it has a serious lack of quality Tex-Mex. After 8 years living up here, I am still shocked that it hasn't arrived. Nearly every other genre, I'd put it in the top 3 in the US and number 1 in most.

Houston's "Tex-Mex" pretty much sucks, but damn if Pico's isn't some of the best Mexican food I've ever had anywhere (even if you do have drive to Bellaire).

Pico's

I'm a simple man. Some might say simpleton. For me, the three basic food groups are: Tex-Mex, BBQ and seafood. Don't really care about the ethnic melting pot variety of influences, celebrity chefs or such epicurean stuff, so my top three be:

1. Austin
2. N'awlins
3. SFO

Amen.
