If I gave you $250,000

Fully fund both my kids education.

Put 50K down on a condo in Port A, and toss it into the Rental pool and be black on that from day one. Eliminate our debt. Move to a house near I already live but with a backyard with a NICE pool or one big enough to put in a nice pool, and be debt free from that point on.

Invest the rest

let's see first i would finally be able to get married to my girlfriend. (i'm too poor to do that right now). buy a house for us to live in. put some away for college for kid's in the future. donate a few thousand to World Vision for the people in Africa. and then take my friends (including whoever gave me the money) on a trip to Europe for a couple of weeks. i think that about covers it.

I would probably travel abroad doing work for free and using the money to invest locally into necessary projects. First stop, Bangladesh. They have huge problems with diarrheal disease associated with pathogens (from the latrine ponds) and/or arsenic found in other wells. I would also not use Hach kits for testing water quality.

pay off all debts, including house, then take a family vacation, buy long term care insurance for both me and my wife.

The only luxury item I would have would be to hire a maid to come in once a week.

Then invest the rest, dollar cost averaging over 9 months into some T Rowe Price mutual funds.

I'd start a new distillery making high quality spirits.. Ten years later, or so, I'd sell it and retire, along with my investor(s)..

Pay for a couple more years of offspring college. Save the rest.

Perhaps set it up as a "foundation" to fund a really good home cellar.

10% tithe
Pay off house and both cars
Put some more aside for my son's college fund
Buy some land somewhere for a future 2nd house

for retirement, aside from having cash in the bank, the number one thing you need to do is be out of debt -- all of it. that's why people are saying pay off their mortgage.

Lots of worries about my daughter right now, so:
1. $50k to fully fund her 529 college account
2. $100k in a trust fund mad up of moderate risk mutual funds to help jump start her life when she graduate from college in 19 years
3. $75k to pay off my house
4. $25k to pay off various other notes.

That would then leave the decks clear for me to fully fund my 401k going forward and save up the purchase price of a more fuel efficient car.

To be honest, I don't need 250,000 and I go to a church where I trust where that money would go. I am pretty sure that God says to love him with all of your heart mind, soul, and strenghth. The only consumer debt I have is a small amount left on my car, and then my mortage which we pay comfortably. So really no need to do anything else for myself. I am blessed and would love to be able to just give it all away. I would give it anonymously. The church where I go also is pretty discreet about who gives what. The business administrator is the only person who really sees who gives what.
netslave, I would go to the business administrator and tell only her about it.

Hell, I'd love 1/10 of $250k. My wife and I have spent the last 2 years getting completely out of debt. We're down to the last $4500 on our car and are now trying to save up for a down payment on a house. It seems like as the weeks and months go on that gets harder and harder to do. We used to be able to budget $40 a week for gas (I ride my bike to work). We had a set grocery budget, but both of those now seem inadequate because of rising costs. Sucks.

Haven't told anybody this but I have a very serious itch in my heart to carry gift cards around and just give them to random people. On a smaller scale, I've thought about doing it with $2 bills.

I ran in to get some BBQ for my family and there were about 15 soldiers. Man, I wanted so bad to buy that meal for them all. I didn't pull the trigger and it bothers me still. I did give a couch to a solider who was just starting a family. I was going to sell it for $100 and he agreed to pay. Once I found out what he did and where he was in his life, I couldn't take the money.

So, an annuity to pay out at least $100 a month that I could give away randomly. I wouldn't pay off the house, my interest rate is too bad ***. Student loans would go. The wife would go back to school and stay home with the kids until they are in school. Need more in the 401k to supplement the state pension. Kids college funds. Help family and friends improve there standard of living.
