The best breakup song ever...

I GAVE HER A RING

By Steven Fromholz

A chip of a diamond, in 10 karat gold
I hocked all my dreams, all my secrets I sold.
I bought all the love this poor boy could bring her
I gave her a ring, she gave me the finger!
We had talked to the preacher and her mom and dad.
We talked of the future… oh, the plans that we had.
I sang all the love songs this poor boy could sing.
Must not have liked what she heard
‘Cause she gave me the bird
When I gave her my ring

I gave her a ring
She gave me the finger.
I said “Babe, that’s the wrong one,”
When she held out the long one.
The look in her eyes said I need not linger.
I heard the fat lady sing when
I gave her my ring and
She gave me the finger!

She flipped off our love…
There’s nothing crueler.
So, I carried that ring on back to the jeweler.
He said “This ring is like love, son, there’s no guarantee…
Like when you gave it to her, I’m gonna give it to you,
When you give it to me!”
I heard the fat lady sing
When I gave her my ring and
She gave me the finger!

Fromholz is greatness

Holes in the Floor of Heaven by Collin Raye

It's has a good ending, but I still get emotional.

Another strange one that gets me choked up is "Daddy Never Was the Cadillac Kind". It reminds me of my grandfather.

Bringing up Collin Raye reminds me of another good heartbreaker, "Love, Me." I usually get a little misty-eyed when I hear that song.

jmatt's first list...very on point.

Kris Kristofferson, Sunday Morning Coming Down

And somewhere far away a lonely bell was ringin'.
And it echoed through the canyons,
Like the disappearing dreams of yesterday.

Holes in the floor of heaven was Steve Wariner and not Collin Raye... But yes that one is a great song...

I nominate - Goodbye by Air Supply

I can see the pain living in your eyes
And I know how hard you try
You deserve to have much more
I can feel your heart and I sympathize
And I'll never criticize
All you've ever meant to my life

I don't want to let you down
I don't want to lead you on
i don't want to hold you back
From where you might belong

You would never ask me why
My heart is so disguised
I just can't live a lie anymore
I would rather hurt myself
Than to ever make you cry
There's nothing left to say but goodbye

You deserve the chance at the kind of love
I'm not sure i'm worthy of
Losing you is painful to me

I don't want to let you down
I don't want to lead you on
i don't want to hold you back
From where you might belong

You would never ask me why
My heart is so disguised
I just can't live a lie anymore
I would rather hurt myself
Than to ever make you cry
There's nothing left to say but goodbye

You would never ask me why
My heart is so disguised
I just can't live a lie anymore
I would rather hurt myself
Than to ever make you cry
There's nothing left to try
Though it's gonna hurt us both
There's no other way than to say goodbye

Alan Jackson "Remember When"
One Republic "Apologize"
Garth Brooks "The Dance"
RHCP "Under the Bridge"( I may be wrong on the song title)

I completely agree with George Jones "He stopped loving her today". Tears me up every time I hear it. Speaking of GJ.. he's gonna be at the Star of Texas Rodeo this year.

"Layla" by Derek and the Dominoes. You can just feel the anguish and hurt during the instrumental section. Very moving.

"Alison" by Elvis Costello. His aim is true, but she's got a husband now.

"Julia" by The Beatles. John's ode to his deceased mom. "Half of what I say is meaningless, so I say it just to reach you, Julia." Gets me everytime.

Porcupine Tree - My Ashes

Joni Mitchell/Sarah McLachalan - River

Sarah McLachlan - Angel

Blackfield - End of the World

Run for the Roses & Leader of the Band-Dan Fogelberg
Mr. Bojangles-Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
Wildfire-Michael Murphey
Vincent-Don Mclean
In the Ghetto-Elvis
I Can't Make You Love Me-Bonnie Raiit
Love Child-Supremes
Send in the Clowns-Judy Collins
Both Sides Now-Joni Mitchell
Go Rest High on that Mountain-Vince Gill

Dreamland - Dale Watson (His tribute to his finance, killed in a car wreck)

Tell Lorrie I Love Her - Keith Whitley

Don't Close Your Eyes - Keith Whitley

What Have You Got Planned Tonight Diana? - Merle

Marie, Townes Van Zandt

Most of that No Deeper Blue album takes hopelessness to whole new levels. It truly lives up to its title.
