I'd include- I'll Be Long Gone by Boz Scaggs except the chorus is too uplifting. Also a strong 2nd for John Prine's- Sam Stone

Speaking of the Scorpions - "Still Loving You"

and going back even further in time ...

Nazareth - "Love Hurts"

Oh, and just about anything Jackson Browne did/does.

This thread is a sad state of affairs. I expect it to be linked to Goth bbs's anytime now. Great (yet sad) songs here.

Somebody Saved Me by Pete Townsend.

But there was a soul on whom I could depend
He worked himsef crazy while I laid in bed
I never leaned on a person like I leaned right then
And when I finally woke up clean my friend was dead
Stoned dead

That was Pete's tribute to Keith Moon.

Let's wallow! I'm waiting for a tow truck so I have time to make a list. Some favorites, special emphasis on artists suffering mental breakdowns:

- Big Star - Holocaust - the sound of a great band disintergrating on tape.
- Modern Lovers - Hospital
- Pretty much everything on Blonde on Blonde and Blood on the Tracks
- Betty Harris - I'm Evil Tonight
- Neil Young - On the beach
- Joy Division - Love will tear us apart
- Kinks - Nothin' in this world can do can make me stop worrying
- Dusty Springfield - What do you do when love dies
- Lucinda Williams - Pineola
- Magazine - Permafrost
- Reigning Sound - Funny Thing
- TVZ - Only him or me
- Television - Torn curtain
- Richard and Linda Thompson - Shoot out the lights
- Eddie and Ernie - Indian Tears
- Without You - Harry Nilsson

any number of Magnetic Field songs...

"100,000 Fireflies"

You won't be happy with me,
But give me one more chance
You won't be happy anyway.

"I think I Need A New Heart"

but the words you want to hear
you will never hear from me
I'll never say "happy anniversary"
never stay to say "happy anniversary"

"Born On a Train"

But I've been makin' promises I know I'll never keep.
One of these days I'm gonna leave you in your sleep.

"When You're Old and Lonely"

When you're old and lonely
And the rush of life is past.
Days go by too slowly and
The years go by too fast.

"Saddest Story Ever Told"

Once upon a time we fell in love or at least that's what you said
You say I can find someone else but I just wish I was dead

"Summer Lies"

All the sweetest things you said and I believed, were summer lies
Hanging in the willow trees like the dead, were summer lies
I'll never fall in love again.
I whispered too but the things I said were true
and I gave up my whole world for you
I gave you all the best years of my life
and half the worst and now you're gone

"The Desperate Things You Made Me Do"

I dedicate this song to you
For all the desperate things you made me do
I'd like to beat you black and blue
For all the agony you have put me through

"All The Umbrellas In London"

if i make it tonight it'll be all right
it'll make a good song or something
i've been trying to give myself reasons to live
and i really can't think of one thing

all the umbrellas in london couldn't stop this rain
and all the dope in new york couldn't kill this pain
and all the money in tokyo couldn't make me stay
all the umbrellas in london couldn't stop this rain

El Oso said it first. There is NO sadder song than George Jones' "He Stopped Loving Her Today." I nearly drove off in a ditch the first time I heard it.

I also nominate "Members Only" by Bobby Blue Bland.

There's an album called Heartbreaker by Ryan Adams. Check it out along with the rest of his stuff, and it's all you'll need.

Written by Dorsey Dixon, made famous by Roy Acuff, "The Wreck on the Highway." Gut wrenching.

Many George Jones songs. I can't listen to "You Comb Her Hair" if there's any one else around.

Thanks everyone. I might have to expand my mix to a 3-CD "Suicide Watch" box-set edition.

Also, I like the Dylan suggestions, but for me, the real heartbreaker is "Most of the Time."

The most appropriate Jeff Buckley song for this is "Lover You Should've Come Over" from the "Grace" album.

Do NOT listen to this after a break-up.
It's never over, my kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder
It's never over, all my riches for her smiles when i slept so soft against her
It's never over, all my blood for the sweetness of her laughter
It's never over, she's the tear that hangs inside my soul forever

Gets me every time.

I'd also like to add "Day After Day" by Badfinger.

and to bridge this back to the sad moments in movies thread from a couple weeks ago, "when somebody loved me" by sarah mclachlan is pretty sad when you're watching the movie, and probably the rest of the time too.

Gotta agree with those crowning He Stopped Loving Her Today. Used to have a friend that would curse his exes and say, "Saddest song ever." whenever it came on. Mark Jones...no relationship to George except in his love of drink and bitterness toward certain women.

Del Amitri has has a few, but the two that stand out are "Nothing Ever Happens" and "Be My Downfall"I consider Del Amitri the best rock/AC band that nobody knows about. They had one radio hit, "Roll With It." If you like wicked, well-written pop rock, they're one of the best.

"Nothing Ever Happens" is one of the best songs of the last 20 years, IMO.

NOTHING - lyrics

Post office clerks put up signs saying position closed
And secretaries turn off typewriters and put on their coats
Janitors padlock the gates
For security guards to patrol
And bachelors phone up their friends for a drink
While the married ones turn on a chat show

And they'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

Gentlemen time please, you know we can't serve anymore
Now the traffic lights change to stop, when there's nothing to go
And by five o'clock everything's dead
And every third car is a cab
And ignorant people sleep in their beds
Like the doped white mice in the college lab

Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before

And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

Telephone exchanges click while there's nobody there
The Martians could land in the carpark and no one would care
Close-circuit cameras in department stores shoot the same video every day
And the stars of these films neither die nor get killed
Just survive constant action replay

Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before

And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

Bill hoardings advertise products that nobody needs
While angry from Manchester writes to complain about
All the repeats on T.V.
And computer terminals report some gains
On the values of copper and tin
While American businessmen snap up Van Goghs
For the price of a hospital wing

Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before
Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
They'll burn down the synagogues at six o'clock
And we'll all go along like before

And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

DOWNFALL - lyrics

The bus is pulling out and I guess I'd better go
Before I make a grave mistake and let my feelings show
And twenty miles away she waits alone for me
But when I try to picture her you're the one I see
And in another situation I could put up a fight
But you will be my downfall tonight

So the night is coming down, drowning us in blue
And it all points towards the things we know we shouldn't do
And as I look at you and I fall under your spell
Well I know I should be thinking of her lying there herself

And when faced with temptation you know a man should stand and fight
But you will be my downfall tonight

Be my downfall be my great regret be the one girl
That I'll never forget
Be my undoing be my slow road to ruin tonight

So the bus is pulling out and I'm grounded here with you
And I want to say the sweet things babe I've always wanted to
So tell me now the tail-lights have gone out of sight
Baby won't you be my downfall once again tonight

As I clicked on this thread George Strait's "You can't make a heart love somebody" came on my mp3 player, so I'll nominate that one.
