Houston Astros 2020 thread............

Nice timing Francis
"Astros pitcher Francis Martes suspended 162 games without pay after testing positive for Boldenone, a performance-enhancing drug. He was previously suspended for a similar violation in March"

Bellinger is such an idiot. Ok to say your mind, but pretty hypocritical when your team just traded for Betts/Price. Red Sox got fined in 2017 for cheating already and will be soon for 2018.

Dodgers should have won their games at Dodger Stadium...........they had home field advantage and lost twice in Dodger Stadium...........they need to quit crying about it............If it was such a big advantage then how did the Red Sox win 3 straight in Houston in 2018?

Perhaps worth noting as the 2020 season approaches is that there were no allegations of cheating last season and the Astros had the second highest team wRC+ in the history of baseball

1) 1927 Yankees - 126
2) 2019 Astros - 125
T-3) 1930 Yankees - 124
T-3) 1931 Yankees - 124
5) 2017 Astros - 122 *

Seen yesterday on flashing overhead driver advisory on Hwy 121 Sam Rayburn Tollway North of Dallas:

"The Astros can't steal our signs - drive safely!"

Sorry, I know this is worthless without pics... or linky.

SI article from 2018 referencing how the LA Dodgers use cameras to steal signs
They say the LAD had an army of 20 stealing signs in 2018

I find it hilarious that players are complaining about someone else doing what they also do. We stole signs in pony league. If someone was on second they would signal the pitches to the batter. Head touch, chest touch, etc. Everyone is acting like this is something new.

Vol, sign stealing on the field in baseball has been around as long as baseball. The issue now is the dugout using video to decipher the sign and alert the batter in real-time.

Yes; but when done completely on the field it is impossible to judge. For example, a runner on second base stands on the backside of the bag - is that a preference or a tip of the called pitch?

If someone is reading the catchers signal and relaying that to the batter somehow then it's sign stealing. Doesn't matter if it's by camera or eyes. You can't call one gamesmanship because it's harder to do while the other is cheating. Both are shooting for the same thing....getting the competitive edge. They are all just pissed they didn't think of it first although I've heard other teams also used the camera system.

I'm not condoning it, but sign stealing in baseball has been going on as long as signs have been used. Just like all the stupid stuff football teams now use on the sidelines to call in plays or schemes. Why do they do that? Because someone is trying to steal the play signals to tip off the defenses.

I agree Vol, but it is unenforceable when done in the field because there is no set place where a runner has to be. The runner can be on the bag; behind the bag; foot next to the plate side of the bag; foot can be on the field side of the bag; lead can be 2, 3, 4 steps away from the bag. There is no way that can be enforced as stealing signs.

I completely understand your point and don't disagree how hard it is to monitor and prove, but that doesn't make what the Astro's did any worse just because they did something that could be caught.

My original point was how hypocritical these players are because they all do it yet criticize the Astros saying MLB should strip the title, ban them from the post season, player suspensions, etc. I think MLB got it mostly right and knew where to draw the line. The players should just shut up, play ball and stop being hypocrites.

Agree.

What the Astros did was so far worse and so next level to on the field stealing comparing the two is just not legitimate. They used technology, relaying from non-players and a whole host of things so far beyond a runner at second tipping a pitch that comparing them is like comparing jaywalking to a triple homicide and saying well both are a crime so they are both the same. A runner on second tipping pitches has been going on since the days of Teddy Roosevelt, it is not even in the same universe as what the Astros did.
