Horns vs UCONN

Vol Horn 4 Life

Good Bye To All The Rest!
42-24 UCONN at the half.

Texas is shooting 30.8% fg and 16.7% from three point range. UCONN is leading in rebounds 22-13.

Taped it and have only been able to watch a little over half of the first half. It was bad basketball, and my initial thought was that the issues the team had in game one they still have in game 9. There doesn't seem to be any real improvement. They will have to shoot a very high percentage to have a chance in conference play. Based on what I have watched so far as well as a few of the other conference teams, I see them finishing in the bottom third of the conference unless they make substantial improvement in execution on defense and offense (and shoot near 50% on most nights).

UConn was reeling before the game against us and finally put it all together to take out their frustrations. I think most people had this as an L before the year started, but it's a shame that the Huskies finally stopped playing down to mediocre opponents.

Like I said on the NC State thread, we have to play a certain style in order to keep us in games. That's not necessarily a problem if it works, but in the event that we run up against a physical, power-forward-heavy team, we're forced to dial up the style points, and they clearly didn't do that against UConn.

Disappointed in Larry and Weaver. The one thing they really have to do in games like this is protect the ball and make sure that Johnson et al get solid looks. They were very bad. Terry is still clearly limiting Mark, so he must be at 50%-ish. UConn is just a better team.

Larry and Weaver should definitely see Tre more. The team needs more movement in the offense which is not on them. I’m not blaming the lose on them. The players and “COACHES” have to take responsibility. Also, would love to see more pick-n-roll with Shedrick. UConn basically beat us with it. I had to go look Larry up. Looks like he was an assist and defense guy at his previous school and could score in that offense. The previous coach had a moving offense and they didn’t play alot of one on one ball either. Hopefully, they all can find their grooves on the offense and play defense. I’m still rooting for the guys. I would like to be in the gym during practice to see what goes on behind close doors.

UConn is bigger and and much better coached. They play team offense, share the ball, move, roll to the basket and pass to the open man.

Meanwhile the Horns are playing one on one, not moving or rolling to the hoop, few passes and not dishing to the open man.
It’s going to be long season.

WELL SAID🎤. Stop blaming the guys; I’m sure they running what the coaches are instructing them to run and what they practice daily. I’m a fan just like everybody else, we on the outside looking in. Maybe they can mimic UCONNs offense because it “works,” but the coaches have to want to change it and make adjustments to their offense.

Nobody is blaming any players. Tournament Terry is the one being questioned with every scheme and play concern. With so much change in the roster I'm not sure many really know much about the players.

The scheme and play is very concerning. I wish we had the same playing style as UCONN. It’s definitely the type of offense. As the previous post state, “UCONN plays team offense, share the ball, MOVE, roll to the basket and pass to the open man” that's the difference. We can do the same but that offense has to taught. We can turn this around before conference but it has to start from the head. Hopefully, the guys can provide input. Coaches and players helping to make it better before conference. It can be done🤞🏻🤘🏻

When you're as small a team as we are, the pick and roll game is a lot less effective.
Which is why you need an offense of constant off the ball motion, off ball back screens and back cuts. Instead, we the offense seems to be an offense about nothing, with the ball going back and forth at the top with some screens until it generally gets to Kaluma or Johnson with 10 seconds or less on the shot clock and they go one on one. Same as last year with Kaluma/Johnson instead of Abmas/Disu. Its "tournament" Terry's offense.

On defense, they lack the intensity and the aggressive switching that we saw under Beard. It is what it is and in my opinion Texas is going to be stuck in the middle to the back end of the conference while under the Terry program. I want him to succeed but I just don't see it happening.

Good catch, same offense as last year but this year its with different players. Some players doesn't look as sharp in this offense. I’ve gone back and watched some of these guys at their previous schools and they look like totally different players in the offense and defense here.😳 Different coaches, style of play and some may thrive in different systems. Hopefully, they can pull it together and be successful here.

Positive take away they beat New Mexico St😀🤘🏻

Best thing about the New Mexico St. game was that Mark looked much better and in the flow of the game. Maybe he has gotten over his injury. Caveat, New Mexico St. didn't play much defense and were smaller than Texas. The bad was Tre Johnson leaving with some type of injury although it didn't look serious.
