Horns vs Jayhawks Game Thread

Whew! Horns win! 9-3 for the first time in too long! The D still needs to learn how to administer the coup-de-gras in the 4th quarter especially when on the road. I'll be interested to hear what Tom has to say in the post game.

Now for WVU and OU...

Critiques aside we are going to big 12 CCG. How many gave this team real chance to do that at start of season?

And PS - Kansas never an easy place to play, and I’m guessing the fact that it was kansas’s Coach last game and sams worst Gabe didn’t help.

Hook’em
Vince and company almost lost there.....

Ehlinger's TDs are third most in program history.
His 2018 compares well to recent Longhorn legends.

2018 Sam Ehlinger: 34 TDs, 4 INT
2008 Colt McCoy: 45 TDs, 8 INT
2005 Vince Young: 38 TDs, 10 INT

I just ran some quick numbers based on W/L %.

This 2018 UT football season will finish better than any of the last 5 years.

It has the opportunity to finish better than any of the last 8 years.

2018 possible records:
9-5 0.64 (2018 worst possible W/L %)
10-4 0.71
11-3 0.79 (2018 best possible W/L %)

2017 7-6 0.54
2016 5-7 0.42
2015 5-7 0.42
2014 6-7 0.46
2013 8-5 0.62
2012 9-4 0.69
2011 8-5 0.62
2010 5-7 0.42
2009 13-1 0.93

Tough fourth quarter but this was the same Kansas team that scored 40 on OU and just got held to less than 20. Sam had his worst game of year and no Gary Johnson or Brandon Jones in second half. There is a lot to use from this game as they head to Arlington next week.

On the other hand, I think the D had a fine game. Held them scoreless till late in the third. 17 points allowed to KU is not bad. Below their average in the B12. Not to mention it took a very quirky on sides kick recovery on their part to get 17.

We scored fewer than any other B12 team Kansas played this year except K State. I'd say the offense performed below expectations today. And I would lay that at the feet of the coaching staff primarily for going into a shell in the 4th quarter, and then Sam had a below average day.

For some reason our coaches get overly cautious in the fourth quarter when we have the lead.

Well, it wasn't a thing of beauty, but it met the objectives - (1) get the W and (2) keep everyone healthy. When the season was about to start, I said I'd consider it a good year to go 8-4 and get a decent bowl game - and the team has already exceeded my expectations. I think they're about a season ahead of any reasonable schedule we could have expected. Winning the Big XII Championship would be terrific!

I think Sam was most certainly off today. Maybe his injury or maybe just a bad day. Everyone is eligible for one those from time to time. Even tom Brady.

It was nine years between our first and second Big XII championships.

It's been nine years since our last.
So according to longest sunshine, we are going to be Big 12 Champs!

Which is worse? Our fans when we are doing well or our fans when we are struggling?

I am proud of this team and where the program is headed.

Sam was obviously still hurting today. Over throwing consistently means you can't follow through with the ball. I so hope he is 100% by next week!

Missed conversing on the thread but I did watch the entire game. It was more stressful than I cared to endure! I don't know if Sam's injury had anything to do with his two interceptions. They were a rewind of last year. Just awful throws. I can't figure it out.

The team is not a consistent powerhouse but we have a very talented roster. We seem to have melt-downs that cannot be explained. The struggles with the onside kicks was frustrating. I guess Dicker is still experiencing freshman inconsistencies as his two out of bounds kicks didn't help.

In the end it was a road game against a team that always seems to play over the heads against the Horns. They had something to play for: 1) It was Texas 2) It was goodbye to their old coach 3) Their new coach was watching 4) It was Texas

Take the win, step back and imagine how you felt after the Maryland game and contrast that to being in the Big 12 Championship Game. Or for that matter, how you felt during the spring and your expectations knowing Tim Beck would return, an unsure quarterback situation (see negative threads about Sam) and losing Poona, Connor, Malik, Chris Warren, Hemphill-Mapps, DeShon Elliot, Dickason (!) and Holton Hill.

We are headed in the right direction. Last year our 4q meltdowns resulted in losses that we viewed, at least early on, as moral victories. We still have said meltdowns, but mostly we pull out the W. We got the W today, and thats good enough for me. Weve already got 9 wins and all I wanted this year was 8. Anything else going forward in 2018 is gravy as far as I am concerned.
