Texas (14-0; 3-0) seeks to snap a five game losing streak at Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater. Horns have not won there since a 91-74 win during the 2008-09 season. Oklahoma State (12-2; 2-1) will be defending a nine game home winning streak. They are undefeated at home this season. Horns are riding a four road game winning streak. Texas leads the series 27-15.
Brittney Martin (# 22, 6-0 Sr. G) and Kaylee Jensen (# 54, 6-4 Soph. C) lead the Cowgirls in scoring at 16.0 and 11.0 ppg, respectively. Mandy Coleman (# 3, 6-3 Soph. F/C) is the third leading scorer at 8.0 ppg. Those three have taken 59.1% of the Cowgirls shots in Big 12 games and connected on 68.1% of OSU’s made FGs. Martin is making 51.1% (23-45) of her FGs. Jensen (13-33) is at 39.4%. Coleman has connected on 11-23 for 47.8%. Roddricka Patton (# 23, 5-4 Sr. G) and Karli Wheeler (# 24, 5-8 Fr. G) have hit five 3s each to lead OSU. Patton (5-17, 29.4%) has the most three point attempts. Wheeler (5-10, 50.0%) has the highest percentage from BTA. Coleman (2-5, 40.0%) and Katelyn Loecker (# 45, 6-0 Jr. F; 1-7, 14.3%) have the other 3pters OSU has made in league play. OSU are tenth in the league in FT shooting % at 52.2%. Jensen (7-11, 63.6%) has taken almost half of OSU’s 23 FTs in Big 12 play. Martin and Patton are each 2-2 from the FT line.
Jensen joins Imani as the two players averaging double doubles in Big 12 play as she averages 13.3 rpg to with her 11.0 ppg. Martin is just off of joining them as she averages 9.0 rpg to go with her team leading 16.0 ppg. Coleman (5.7 rpg) and Patton (2.3 rpg) are third and fourth in rebounding, respectively. Patton’s 7.3 apg top the league. Coleman is tied for tenth in the league at 3.3 apg. Martin is third on the team at 2.0 apg. Patton (9 steals) , Martin (8 steals ) and Coleman (5 steals ) are the leaders for OSU in steals.
Martin, Coleman, Patton, Loecker and Jensen have started all three league games for OSU. Loecker (21.3 mpg) is the only starter that averages less than 31 mpg. Martin (38.3 mpg) and Patton (35.0 mpg) are the workhorses for the Cowgirls. Wheeler and LaTashia Jones (# 6-2 Fr. F) are the only other Cowgirls averaging in double digit minutes in Big 12 play. Alana Simon (# 1, 5-10 Jr. G), Diana Omozee (# 5, 5-11 Jr. G) and Jentry Holt (# 13, 6-3 Fr. F) have seen action in all three games but at less than 9 minutes a game. Sydney Walton (# 10, 5-8 Soph. G) and Rylie Swanson (# 21, 5-10 Sr. F) have rarely seen the court in league play.
The undefeated Horns have four players averaging double figures in Big 12 games: Imani (16.7 ppg), Ariel (11.2 ppg) and Empress and Brooke at 10 ppg each. Kelsey is close to making it five players in double digits with a 9.0 ppg average. Ariel (11-18, 61.1%), Kelsey (12-21, 57.1%) and Imani (21-39, 53.8%) are the top three in FG % among players that have taken at least 10 FG attempts. Imani with 13 FG attempts a game while Brianna, Celina and LaShann with an average of 5 FG attempts per game bracket four others that average between 13 and 5 FG attempts a game. That’s eight players that take at least five shots a game. Who takes the most will vary from game to game. Makes it hard to game plan a defense against this team other than looking to take Imani out the scoring column. Brooke (7-16, 43.8%), Celina (4-10, 40.0%), Empress (4-96, 44.4%) and Ariel (3-8, 37.5%) have helped Texas to rank third in league play in 3pt FG%. Texas has three players that have gotten to the FT line at least 10 times in their three league games: Empress (8-12, 66.7%), Imani (8-11, 72.7%) and Ariel (9-10, 90.0%).
Imani is one of two players that are averaging a double double in league play. She is averaging 14.0 rpg to go with her 16.7 ppg. OSU’s Kaylee Jenson is the other player at 11.0 ppg and 13.3 rpg. Brianna is second on Horns’ in rebounding at 5.7 rpg. Kelsey and Celina each averages 5.0 rpg. Horns have two of the top 15 assist leaders in the league in Celina (4.7 apg) and Brooke (3.0 apg). Empress (2.7 apg) and LaShann (2.0 apg) also do a good job setting up teammates for scores. Brianna (7 steals) and Ariel (5 steals) have 12 of the team’s 20 steals. Imani’s 17 blocks in league games tops both the Horns and the Big 12. She has twice as many blocks as the next closet player in the league.
Imani, Brooke, Brianna, Empress and Celina have started all three league games. Ariel, Kelsey, LaShann and Jordan have seen action in those three games as well. Tasia, Brady, Sara and Olamide have played in two of the three league games. Brooke’s 30.0 mpg leads six others that average between 27 and 18 mpg. None of the Horns are among the leaders in minutes played per game.
Projected starting lineups based on the last game:
Texas____________Okla. State
Imani (6-7)________ Jensen (6-4)
Brianna (5-9)______ Coleman (6-3)
Empress (5-9)_____ Martin (6-0)
Celina (5-8)_______ Loecker (6-0)
Brooke (5-4)______ Patton (5-4)
The Cowgirls have the most height inside that Texas has faced yet in the league. They start Jensen at 6-4 and Coleman at 6-3. They bring in Holt (6-3) and Jones (6-2) so they don’t lose much. Martin and Jensen will be the focus of the Horns’ defense as they score almost exactly half of the team’s ppg. Imani will face a stiff challenge from Jensen on both ends and on the boards. Brianna will give a lot of height to Coleman which OSU will try to take advantage of inside. Texas can counter this with Kelsey and/or Sara. Martin will face off against Empress initially although she will be defended by and defense various wings from Texas such Ariel, Brady and possibly even Brianna at times. The PG battle will be interesting as Brooke and Patton are the same size and both have outstanding speed and quickness. OSU basically has used a seven player rotation with a post (Jones) and a guard (Wheeler) coming in off the bench. Texas will go at least nine deep. Foul trouble could be a factor, especially for OSU.

Horns will look to run. The Cowgirls will slow it down. While they will run, with four of their five starters averaging over 31 mpg, they have no problem slowing the game down. Their two tall posts make it hard for most teams to match up with them. That should not be a problem for Texas. If OSU decides to double Imani with both of their posts, Brianna could have a huge game. OSU takes almost as many threes a game as Texas does, but has not yet found the range, hitting only 27.1% from BTA. One area where OSU is vulnerable is at the FT line. They are last in the league in FT% and only get to the FT line 7.7 times a game. Meanwhile, they are putting opponents on the FT line 15 times a game. Horns will need to take advantage of that edge. OSU doesn’t score a lot but they top the league in FG% defense, allowing opponents to make only 28.7% of their FG attempts. They also top the league in 3pt defense at 24.5%. Their offense may not look that pretty but they sure make their opponents look ugly on offense. Texas ranks among the top three in various offensive categories. Whoever can impose their game on the other will have an edge towards a win.
Game time will be at 5 PM CST and televised on Fox Sports Oklahoma (in Austin: TWC FCSC 373 (Fox College Sports Central).
