Help! I need some advice***UPDATED

My son received his acceptance letter to UT. WHOHOO.

We now read where it says HE HAS TO ATTEND summer classes from June-Aug in order to attend fall classes.

Well, besides the fact that we have paid $10,000 thus far for a two week Hawaiian vacation which is one of his graduation gifts, we cannot back out of the trip.

He purposely took Dual courses in High School and finished all freshman college credits. So he really wont be starting as a Freshman.

Can anyone give me advice on this? My husband called the school today and got some kid who had no idea and would have someone call us back, and we have yet to hear.

Plus, he was already accepted to Dolbie to live, but cannot be there until fall.

Who rents a room for two months in Austin?

So, we have learned that he does have to attend summer school and will probably miss Hawaii, but we are all fine we that.

So since I don't know the diffrence between the housing, my son will be staying at DOBIE because it seemed to fit what he was looking for.

My question is this, a friend asked where he was going to stay, and we told him and his comment was "isn't that where most of the jewish stay"? The next evening he came up to us at an event and said he was talking to my son's school principal and the principal also made a comment about the same.

I took that as they were talking about it being a cheap place, but my husband corrected me with they think it is for the rich.

WTF? Why would it matter where he stayed if he researched and chose thiis to be the place he wanted?

What am I missing here that this seems to be a big deal?

Does it actually have to do with any type of faith?

Well, I am not sure why he HAS to attend summer school, but I'd say that graduation gift goes out the door.

10k? For a high school graduation gift that will last for two weeks? Versus a UT education that will last a lifetime?

Time to put on the mommy pants and make a decision for the kid.

$10,000 for two weeks isn't that bad. that is 3 round trip tickets, plus 14 nights in a rented house, and a deep sea fishing trip. This is a huge vacation for us all.

That's not even the point here. What I gather is that there are so many freshman coming in that it is a requirement that they attend summer school. And since my son has taken all the requred courses, what on earth is he suppose to do?

he may be a provy. he has to attend summer school and pass the courses before he get gain full acceptance to UT,

sounds like your son got a provisional acceptance into ut. he has to attended both sessions of summer school and meet the minimum gpa, otherwise he has to enroll at another school in the fall. I don't think there's anyway around it.

Maybe, if you can't get your money back directly from the airline and hotel, you can still purchase trip insurance or can reschedule the trip.

Yeah..that sounds like provisional.

Choices are either attend a different school and try to transfer into UT after a semester or two. Or skip the vacation and go to one of the best universities around.

He would never give up his chance at going to UT. EVER.

But, damn, we paid for his freshman courses during high school and checked with UT to make sure they did dual credit and they said they did. So does that mean he will take sophmore classes?

I was in the same situation as your son when I entered UT. As I understood it when summer session was offered to me was that it was start in the summer or loes your spot as a UT admit and there is no getting around this offer. Start in the summer or don't come at all.

On a personal note...that summer was the BEST summer of my college career and it provided a smooth transition into college because you can make friends in your smaller classes and (almost) everybody lives in the same dorms (Kinsolving and San Jac). Take the on campus housing option they offer and don't worry about rent.

Also, I didn't go to class the entire week of the US Open and didn't really feel the affects from not going. Not going to class to go on vacation is def. an option if you ask me. Then again, my GPA was nothing to brag about that summer...well really ever. PM me if you have questions.

just a tip here...i did not have to take provisional to get into UT and i regretted it for a couple of reasons:

1. all of my friends who did absolutely loved it. said the classes were easy as hell and that it was a great summer.

2. getting ahead another semester is a great idea. you will eventually have the option to either graduate early (not recommended) or take lighter course loads in upper division (recommended).

he has to take 8-10 hours from June - Aug. per the agreement. That's not a problem.

My point is, why does he have to re-do courses he has already taken? He purposely took these college courses so that he could get those out of the way, as his intentions are to go to medical school so anything he could do help himself get there, he did. Yes, UT was called about the courses, and they did say they were acceptable.

Mary, I can understand your frustrations with the guidance department, it sounds like not everybody was on the same page at UT when they were telling you about the classes your son has already taken.

I can't speak to UT specifically, but I would keep calling around to see what can be done. Perhaps if he has all his freshman classes out of the way, he can be accepted as a sophomore (kind of like a transfer student) and therefore avoid the summer classes? I just wouldn't give up yet, sometimes it takes several phone calls to get the person who really knows their stuff, or has enough pull to make things actually happen.

Good luck, and congrats to your son!

Something you might try: if there are still two summer sessions, sign up for one class in the session during which the vacation dates occur. Have your son meet with the prof to see if he can do some work ahead, or make it up upon his return. Maybe a happy compromise can be achieved where he can still go on the trip.
They arrange things like this for athletes who have to be out of town for games on several occasions. Maybe the instructor will allow some flexibility here. Won't hurt to try.

He should go to summer school if they say he has to and I will volunteer to go in his place to Hawaii.

When are we leaving?

I would call or personally go to The Office of Admissions to speak to a counselor soon. My friend went through a similar experience. She was told she must attend the summer session(s) to attend U.T. in the fall. She had taken several dual credit courses in high school and was told by a U.T. counselor she would be able to register for other classes; in other words, not duplicate what she already took in high school.

Now, for me, I took dual credit courses in high school through a local community college. I made sure that these credits would transfer to U.T. I did have some friends I met my freshman year at U.T. that had to retake classes since their credits did not transfer for some reason. Not saying this is the case with your son, but something you can discuss with a counselor.

So overall, have your son attend summer classes, even if he has to miss the vacation. My friend mentioned decided she wanted to travel for that summer and would just end up transferring into U.T. the next spring. She never got admitted back into U.T. and I know she regrets it more than anything.

On that note, congrats to your son and you! Hopefully everything will work out soon!

Just a side note - this is a good introduction to the byzantine bureaucracy that is UT. Seek out a counselor in your son's college and try to work through it. Pretty much the only way to get things done is to seek out allies, and deal with the administration face to face, as early as possible.

He has 43 college hours, and he took all his history, math, sciences for freshman, which were approved by UT before he even regisitered for these classes. And as stated in the link, it states to take the freshman courses to get ahead of incoming freshman for fall. So basically, he will be taking sophmore classes.

I am really confused, but I will see if I can set up an appointment to meet a counselor. Does anyone know who exactly I need to phone? I see so many numbers and I am so confused.

Thank you all for helping me with this. It is exremely frustrating. And just so you know, he would never give up UT for a Hawaii vacation.

Whoever helps me the most, can just take his place.

Maybe "you" can't back out of it (but I don't believe that) but "he" (son) may have to.

So are you going to deny your child a UT education because you want to go to Hawaii?
