Good for Conan

Looks like Conan will be off the air by next week, with Leno back in charge of the Tonight Show.

it would have to be by his permission, or that would have never seen the light of day.

Kimmel initially comes off as ballsy, but how ballsy is it when it is blessed by Leno, and being used by Leno to get ahead of the inevitable criticism that is going to rain down on him over this whole situation.

Interesting and savy move on Leno's part. In reality, Kimmel comes off as a co-conspirator instead of an adversary here.

Probably most Conan supporters won't see it that way, and get on the "watch Kimmel rip Leno" train.

Leno could be taking the advice of former Governor Bill Clements and just laying back and enjoying the inevitable.

That's right. He was the scuba diving for abortions instead. Hard to keep up with all the crazy politician comments.

I am not a good judge of TV talk shows because the ones I end up liking go away. I liked the Arsenio Hall show quite a bit back in the day. That got canceled.

I don't watch Leno any longer other than specific things. Stuff like Headlines, Jaywalking and Ghost Walking with those two Aussie dudes are hilarious. If a certain guest is on that I like or want to see interviewed (even though it is always questions set up in advance) I will tune in or most likely record it and watch later while I fast forward through the rest of the show and commercials. I do the same with Letterman if a guest of interest is on. I cannot stand his monologues or his top ten lists nor have I for quite some time. So I go right past that.

DVR's are awesome.

I would prefer a Leno show with tidbits like Headlines and footage of his car collection which is quite impressive.

Seems like Jay began hanging around with Brent Favruh and Urban Meyer. What changed your mind, Jay?

The reality of the situation is that Leno is guilty of nothing other than (1) being successful at 11:30, and (2) not wanting to be forced into retirement. Conan is guilty of nothing other than (1) seeking his market value, and (2) expecting his network to stand behind him. Both of these guys got steamrolled by a group of executives which have done very little over the last decade except to relentlessly drive NBC from the most successful network into a steaming hole in the ground.

Per the article, I actually agree that Leno at 11:30 is the right decision financially. The problem is the reasoning by which you come to that conclusion means it was also the right decision 6 years ago when they set this train in motion. What blows my mind is that Zucker has the gall to act surprised by the stir this caused. Basically, NBC just gave up a half season of ratings from 10-12:30, while demonstrating remarkable poor judgment by screwing over two successful talk show hosts, local news affiliate's ad-buys across the country, and nearly a half dozen production studios (including passing semi-successful shows like Medium off to competing networks) who were vying for 9p prime time slots... did he think no one would notice?

Conan got ***-raped on national television, of course he was going to talk about it. Leno got nationally embarrassed at 10p (from a ratings perspective) and then had to play the bad guy at Tonight for a second time, of course he was going to talk about it. Letterman is still pissed about 18 years ago, of course he was going to talk about it. Kimmel is a straight up provocateur, or course he was going to talk about it. Zucker is a straight up idiot if he thought this was going to happen quietly... and actually that lines up quite nicely with his tenure at NBC, which has been marked by repeated and public failures in pretty much every time slot.

This makes me absolutely sick.

Getting rid of Conan is a BAD BAD move. Conan is tops of all the "new wave" of late night guests. Terd Ferguson on CBS is terrible. Jimmy Fallon hasnt been around long enough to be the next one...

Leno has lost his luster.. He isnt worth my time or yours. I cant wait til they move him back into his old time slot, they see his ratings still suck balls and they dread ever making this move.

FOX will pick up Conan. He has ties to a lot of people there from working on The Simpsons. FOX doesnt even have a late night show... What a great way to start off with someone who is already established?

NBC you are my favorite network.. But damn you really pissed me off today.

I will NEVER watch an episode of Jay Leno ever again. And I hope some people around here do the same.. He isnt worth it.

Leno will continue to crush everybody. He's not the bad guy if you read the article above. Conan belongs on cable where he can get away with more. He has not been funny in over a decade and seems tentative to do things. He is lucky to be away from NBC. He needs a better playground to get back the edge he one time had.

It would be huge if HBO picked Conan up.

====================================
He will win the ratings war at the old time slot just like he was doing before he left.

I don't get HBO so I hope Conan doesn't go there. I have to think Fox would offer the most money because they would have a shot at a larger audience compared to a cable network. A show on Fox at 10pm CST vs. 10:35 might also give him a leg up on the other networks.

Leno is not the bad guy in this - it's not his fault that NBC valued him more than they did Conan. I also agree that Leno will probably reclaim the #1 spot.

Can't wait for tonight's episode of Conan. He's been on fire all week.

Conan has been the funny one the past decade while Leno is the one who isnt funny anymore. You have it backwards my friend.

Leno dominates the older crowd. Now that crowd has gotten older, they dont watch late night tv because the comedy has either outgrown them, or they are in bed by 8:30.

Conan is the king of the new generation.. Its time to let Leno go. How much longer will he really stick around? And then when he decides to leave again he has no one good to replace him... NBC will end up with no one.

As much as I love Jimmy Fallon now-a-days in his new role, he still has a LOT of work to do to be the next Tonight Show host. You dont just get that job by default.

It just really pisses me off that tonight is the last night I will get to watch Conan. Someone who I thought would be around forever on NBC.

FOX - Please pick him up. I dont have HBO, and neither do alot of other people.

And what is this "Conan has been holding back, he is being reserved with his comedy and not pushing the envelope"..

Do you even watch his show? Have you watched any of it at all this week? How about the episode with Ricky Gervais? Why dont you goto NBC.com, watch that, and tell me they still arent pushing NBC's envelope.

I said it before and Ill say it again... Leno isnt worth your time. His ratings are going to take a hit regaurdless because the new fans that watch the Tonight Show are Conan's. The ones that watched the Jay Leno Show are the ones that will follow him to 10:30. Which is obviously a very small margin of people, otherwise we wouldnt be in this boat in the first place.

Its not a time slot that owns the audience. Its what you show in that time slot.

(if you dont believe me.. look at the comments at the bottom of this page with all the people declaring that they will boycott Leno marquee.blogs.cnn.com/2010/01/18/conan-obrien-fans-protest-outside-nbc-studios-in-new-york/)

Ya know, I used to love Sunday night cartoons on FOX. They started at the same time everynight. Now that those shows suck, I dont waste my time on that time slot. If the shows were good, I would.

Same thing with Conan and Leno. Just wait NBC. You will get what is coming to you. ********.

Oh and apparently, his contract says he can start with a new network in September.

CMON FOX!!!! GET ER' DONE!!!!

When I meet random people at drinking events/road trips, etc., I'll often ask them right off the bat if they think Jay Leno is funny. If they say yes, I know we won't be friends. he's about the least funny person on TV. I honestly have no idea who laughs at "Why'd the chicken cross the road" jokes in 2010, but I think they're screwed in the head.

I am getting everyone I know to boycott Leno.

No, It isnt all Leno's fault. But he COULD be the bigger man here and step down. If its his show that is sucking, maybe its time to leave?

But more importantly, I just want to show NBC that you cant just pay off someone and get away with it.

Dont let them have their precious ratings by watching Leno's indian given show! Trust me.. You wont be missing anything.

For those of us who care, they are going to show nothing but reruns of Conans brief time on the Tonight Show until after the Olympics.. Then Leno will take over his old show.

Me and everyone I convince will make an effort not to watch it. I hope that someone does the same here at HF!!!

HOOK EM FOR CONAN!!!!

The bottom line is that Conan did not get good ratings with the Tonight Show. If he had, he would still be there. The Tonight Show with Leno beat Letterman and Conan is losing to Letterman.

The Leno apologists who state that Conan was "getting slammed in the ratings" are retarded. Having Leno's unformatted, ridiculous show on at 10 pm EST is what slammed Conan into the ratings abyss. You could have thrown Law & Order in that time slot, and Conan would have picked up at least a 0.3 share just from that alone.

And the funny thing is, they could have bought out Leno instead when this whole fiasco broke, improved Conan's ratings because of the controversy, and come out in the black ink when all is said and done. $80 million now instead of $50 million now was the bottom line for those morons. Instead, those ******* in suits can't take a ******* joke, get all pissy and buy out the guy who could have been their man for the next 15-20 years.

Looking back, Conan could have saved himself a lot of trouble by building the time slot into his contract, but he was so enamored with the idea of the Tonight Show that his team dropped the ball, and now he's the one that has a lot more free time on his hands. God I hate NBC right now.
