Patterson does not want to be on the road recruiting. He does not want to deal with other aspects of the job of defensive coordinator, or "assistant head coach in charge of defense" as you called it. He doesn't want 18 hour workdays all year long. He wants to do more than just a traditional analyst, and said he wants to do for Sark what Dick Tomey did for Mack Brown.
So that means *if we want his help* we create a position that doesn't actively recruit, but may advise on kids to pursue (or not pursue). We create a position that advises, self scouts, and does a lot of what Jerry Kill did for Patterson at TCU. We let him enjoy a well paid, semi-retirement role, and we take advantage of his wealth of knowledge and experience without asking him to go beyond what he is willing to do.
Or, we fire coach K, try to force the DC role on Patterson and watch him walk away too.
Are our defensive coaches coachable? I still fear the "too many Chiefs" syndrome.
.
Sark said that he will be more involved in the defense. Hiring Patterson was a step in that direction. Coach K had better listen up, or he will find himself back in the PAC-12 (or worse). From what I've seen coach PK can't think on his feet during a game. The D gets worse as the game goes on. He's outmatched between the ears.
Unless someone takes his headset away from him, I don't see this working out. It's like Ted Williams handing Mario Mendoza a bat and saying "this instrument can hit .400 if you're like me". PK is no Gary Patterson.
I actually thought of that! I was voted Coach of the Year, for a 1st and 2nd grade team roughly 30 years agoI answered the job posting and applied, so of course nothing is official.
And i think i am qualified to coach the longhorns because i coached the powder puff freshman girls flag football to victory over the upper class at the college i attended!I actually thought of that! I was voted Coach of the Year, for a 1st and 2nd grade team roughly 30 years ago
I’m serious in that I almost applied. I would love to get a rejection letter from UT to hang on my wall.I didn't apply because I want to be in the press box with a headset Sark & K.
That would be an awesome experience. Just to sit upstairs and watch and listen.I didn't apply because I want to be in the press box with a headset Sark & K.

Maybe we can get some better halftime adjustments with GP's assistance.Exactly! And I am unanimous on this. Our D gave up 57 points in a loss to Kansas, yes . . . KANSAS! At home. That was despicable to be polite about it. I believe GP will help get our D get headed in the right direction and help PK get is mind right and his head screwed on properly. I expect solid improvement when the D is on the field in 2022.
What are "Halftime adjustments?"halftime adjustments
I have heard rumors, some distant rumblings, that some coaches will try to make plans to thwart the opponent's success. And this happens ofttimes during the mid game break when players are resting from their labors of the first two quarters of what is called "American football". Some of these teams do not make these mysterious changes very well or at all. What are "Halftime adjustments?"![]()
