Favorite Fictional WW2 movie

wtf.gif
What, no movies with The Duke???? C'mon!!! Sands of Iwo Jima (true event - all fictional movie storyline) or even The Fightin' Seabees.

We're talking John Wayne here people. Wars existed just so The Duke could act them out. And no nod from the Chuck Norris MIA series??? I'm so disappointed in this group.

Caine Mutiny has gotta be near the top (in spite of that crappy love interest subplot).

A lot of my other faves have been mentioned already, but one that hasn't is Run Silent, Run Deep. Great submariner movie with Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster.

And a good u-boat movie was The Enemy Below, where destroyer captain Robert Mitchum squares off against u-boat captain Curt Jurgens. Quality stuff.

Many of mine are already listed but I'd like to add The Big Red 1 w/ Lee Marvin.

It's one of the few WWII combat movies that never show an HQ scene. It's all about Marvin's platoon as they go through N. Africa, Sicily and France. Good stuff.

Hell in the Pacific

two men, one Japanese, the other American, are marooned on a Pacific island. They end up killing each other.

The two men were portrayed by Lee Marvin and Toshiro Mifune.

And John Wayne dodged service in the war so he could make money playing a war hero. John Ford never let him live it down; harassed him about it till the day he died.

Das Boot. Even though it's based on real-life events it's overall a fictional movie.

The best individual scene, however, is the one from Kelly's Heroes where the 3 Shermans blow the whole railyard into oblivion while playing serene folksy music over the loudspeaker.

Did I miss someone mentioning "The Great Escape"?

My favorite non-fiction WWII movie is "The Thin Red Line". Most folks thought it moved too slow but man, could Jones develop a character and then blast you with dialogue. It also had great actors Penn, Nolte, Caviezel, Brody, Harrelson and JC Reilly...allsome cast and movie...

Hookem Danno

I'm going with one that has no "true event" tie in and for that it can be none other than Kelly's Heroes. Woof, woof!!! That's my other dog impression.

They Were Expendable

wolfman: Not really consdiered fictional. It is based on the real life heroics of Lieutenants John Bulkeley (Brickley) and Robert Kelly (Ryan), the movie accurately depicts the defense of the Philippines by American PT Boats from December 1941 through April 1942 for which Lieutenant (later Vice Admiral) Bulkeley was awarded the Medal of Honor and Lieutenant Kelly the Navy Cross.

A very good if underated WW2 film is "Hell is for Heroes" with Steve McQueen, James Coburn, Bobby Darin, Bob Newhart. Action takes place somewhere in Europe, so it's not based on a specific engagement.

"The 49th Parallel" is about a beached u-boat crew trying to make it thru Canada to the (then) safety of the US. More suspense than fighting, but good nonetheless.

"Attack" is a Robert Aldrich-directed film with Jack Palance, Lee Marvin, and Eddie Albert.

I'm going out on a limb here, but I'd say that any movie that deals at all with World War II is based on a true story, however loosely, that depends.

The number of posters who cant comprehend "fictional" seriously blows my mind.

Enemy at the Gates is about Visili Zeitsev, the most famous Russian sniper to come out of Stalingrad/ WW2

The Great Escape ENDS with the words, 'this is dedicated to the 50" because its based, largly on truth.

And as for the above post that all WW2 movies are based on some fact - I present The Dirty Dozen- which isnt in any way shape, or form based on any freaking event in WW2.

Kelly's hero's also isnt based on any semblance of a real event

And both of those are great fictional WW2 movies.

full metal jacket was WWII??? wtf?

oooookay

then I nominate, DR STRANGELOVE! WHOOP!!!!!!

one fictional thing about The Great Escape is that no Americans were part of the escapees in the real escape, they had gotten moved to a part of the camp that had no access to tom dick or harry shortly before the escape happened, but hey how do you keep James Garner and Steve McQueen out.

How about PT109? that was fictional, of course the movie followed the script laid out by Poppa Joe pretty faithfully.
