Fall Camp / Practice

I watched a few YouTube reports. Some common notes:

The DL could be the best since Hampton and Rogers. Might even equal that duo.
The DL is beating the OL.
QB position is still up in the air and may be for some time.
CBs are looking very, very well. Safeties should be good. DBU could be back.
Brockermeyer may start at LB, and that’s even with Gbenda coming on strong.
WRs and OL are a bit behind, but still promising.
Bijan is Bijan. If he gets even decent blocking, he’ll be a star.
Kai $ is a reliable catch for a first down.

I like your report at this point Chop.... D usually is a little out front of O in fall camp. ESPECIALLY with a new HC and new O dealing with normal growing pains like we have.

I have faith, unfounded yet, in Sark O brilliance at Bama and the UT Offensive coaches... hell, what else do I have at this point? :idk:

I think the biggest O challenge is that Sark, Flood and the other Alabama offensive coaches are used to having one of the very best OLs in the nation. Now our OL last year was at least average, but nothing like what Alabama's been used to. Fortunately, a superstar RB can make the blocking look a lot better. Over the past 5 years, we've gone from the worst OL in the conference to a decent enough OL. We need to take it up another few notches. They practice against a top 5 D front, so that will help.

Our 2 QBs aren't Tua, but they'll be at least on par with some QBs Bama has had within memory. My take away from what folks are saying is that the new coaches are less-than-impressed with our WR corps thus far. Position coaches are going to have to earn their keep. Meanwhile, the way people are talking, Kwiatkowski looks like the second coming of Leon Fuller or something.

Oh, and as sorry as he may have been in general, Herman left the DL stacked.

Reposted from me on another thread:

Summary of scrimmage items I have seen so far:
  • defense played well
  • D-line will lead the team
  • secondary is talented and experienced but still tinkering with the pieces to find the best fit
  • linebackers are Overshown and then everyone else - he better not get injured [caveat, I have sense heard several compliments on Brockermeyer like Chop said]
  • offense was a work-in-progress
  • QBs played sub-par - someone will need to step up in scrimmages 2 and 3 to earn the starting spot; it's not so much about practice reps as performing under the lights
  • WRs played sub-par - we are very thin at WR; we need Moore to be Mr. Consistent, Omiere to stop playing tentative, and Whittington to finally show his 5* swagger.
  • RB - will lead the offense
  • O-Line - seems like there is experience and depth but, like secondary, still tinkering to find the best fits

Hullaby has the raw tools (esp the quickness and speed) to develop into a very good LB. The position coaches gotta develop. I've seen Gbenda complimented by more than one commentator, as well as Brockermeyer--but they all need work. The development bar has been set very low by our prior couple of regimes. Fortunately, I think this bunch of coaches are a different breed altogether when it comes to the nitty gritty of player development.

Further updates. Apparently the o-line and QBs were a little worse than initial reports. Thompson with multiple interceptions. Neither QB had any time in the pocket, with multiple sacks on each QB.

That is a little worse than "the defense beat the offense". Texas will play some stout defenses and good d-lines this year. We can't have multiple interceptions and tons of sacks and win.

Offense really needs to step it up. O-line, QB, and WR cannot all be weaknesses going into the season.

Uggggh. Looking even worse, huh?

I'm mildly optimistic about our OL. I really think we were at least average by the end of the year, and we return almost everyone. We won't look like the Wisconsin (or Alabama) OL next year, but I think we'll be pretty good. Flood must do his job and earn his hefty keep. I get the young QBs struggling with a new system. We'll go as far as our QBs can take us. What I don't like are these WR issues...

If we are as stout as stated on defense, we can run or do short passes 85% of the time and win 10 games. What I hate is forcing the passing game, multiple 3 and outs, etc that can be avoided if we call plays that the offense can execute vs. what we want them to execute. Big difference

^That would be a very tall order this year - by all reports, ou is loaded on offense. I'd consider it a big thing if the defense can hold ou down enough that the Texas offense can have a chance to win the game.

By the way - it's 1:00, and ou still sucks! :hookem:

I thought Casey played like nothing mattered in the Alamo Bowl...like a street pick up game...in a way that likely wouldnt translate right off the bat to being the man in big time games in a new season. I have been one talking him up and touting his ability/upside.
Have to look critically and say....Took quite a few risks and was very lucky to not have 2+ INTs including a pick 6 that was dropped and a pass over the middle that should have been picked in that Bowl game.
I love Casey, his potential , and think he has tons of upside....but many things pointing me to a scenario right now where Card wins competition or takes over at some point due to safety with the ball...which will be very valuable with a strong defense and an offense that already may have other growing pains to deal with. Time will tell. He better cut those down to nil or he will be beaten out.

Hmmmmmmmm.

Sometimes the choice is:

1. A reliable bus driver with a high floor; or
2. A Wild West gambler with a high ceiling.

I'm telling you, Chop...if we could put these guys in a VitaMix we would have the perfect QB!

With the caveat that in mid-August I am usually optimistic, I tend to discount the very negative feedback coming from the QB & WR positions. We’ll see. I think CT is a gamer, and he will show it on 9/4. Further, Bijan is probably not a factor in the fall camp. If I was the HC I’d keep my meal ticket in bubble wrap.

Bottom line. I’m jazzed about Kwit and the D, and more optimistic about the O than (apparently) most.

Anyone that doesn’t expect for the reports after scrimmage # 2 to be much more positive?

Oddly I have been super impressed with Coach Banks and sp teams. He held a camp just for sp teams this summer. Recruited and got verbals from the best kicker and long snapper in the country and now this … sp teams matter :hookem::hookem::hookem:

Heard a report that R-Fr OL Logan Parr was hanging in the 2 deep looking like he belonged out there.

Also, Crawford is looking like he could be a shut-down guy on an island, although there are guys in front of him.

Schooler is running first team at DB, as is Card at QB now (QB battle still raging).

We will be good at DB and DL for years to come. This year is going to surprise people and folks will want to play for Texas on defense. The issue is recruiting OL.

I have high hopes for WR Washington who showed some flashes last year. Haven’t heard much on him yet in the Fall camp. Just a bunch of griping about the quality of our WR corps.

Well, we are really deep at TE...
(being both funny and serious with that one--I think this coach actually knows how to use the various TEs on our roster).
