Education (Not Just UT)

It's unbelievable how stupid they become when their emotions fire up. That's a perfect response to what was said.

My Father was a Ph.D. in Poli Sci and he warned me I would be kicked out of school (college) if I were caught cheating. He was Cuban. There was no, "They pick on minorities" in his cautionary words. It was across the board. You cheat, you get caught, you're out. I carried that with me all the way thru as my 2.39 GPA will attest to! Ha...

They are just pathetic. Those are the Liberals; not the Democrats. Democrats are rational. Liberals are beyond reason. They will never give up either. We just have to crush them at the polls. They are mentally ill. I truly believe that. No matter how high functioning they appear to be.

Jungian psychology defense of plagiarism:

All thoughts are in our collective unconsciousness, so nobody should really get any individual credit or attribution for their work. And everybody should be able to utilize any thought as their own--since all thoughts are part of our collective unconsciousness after all.

For a college President, you're mostly looking for a good manager. Someone with leadership ability and business acumen. It would be nice to be an academic heavy weight as well, but the skill set is different. Being a good fund raiser and promoter is more important than what you have published.

Now, someone who gets caught with 20 plagiarism violations probably shouldn't be heading up an elite University. The lack of the most basic academic integrity just doesn't fit.

This joke went over a lot people’s heads.

Lol. Yep. Both of them are in for some real headaches.

The transition of Matt Yglesias from aloof but mindless left wing talking point regurgitator to intelligent adult is really remarkable.

The Gay "debacle" wasn't about merit. It was about a DEI candidate getting exposed for having very little of it, and even more about the insidious processes by which DEI promotes meritless candidates in many companies, government "jobs", and academia all over this country.

"Merit cannot be defined."

Then I guess UT should recruit some more of those National Undefinable Scholar Finalists.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/books/2024/01/04/claudine-gay-plagiarism-examples-harvard/

"The alleged misuse varies in scope. In some places, it appears that Gay took verbatim wording — ranging from sentences to paragraphs — from academics she cited, but without placing that text in quotation marks. In others, she appears to have paraphrased or lightly modified the texts she drew on, without citing the source in the same sentence or paragraph. In a few cases, she did not make any mention of her source."

Ex-Harvard President Claudine Gay reveals downfall of once respected 'elite institutions', WSJ argues

""The real lesson of Ms. Gay’s resignation is that too much of the American academy has abandoned its core mission of learning and free inquiry in favor of political indoctrination," the editorial board concluded. "In other words, it has abandoned the classical liberal tradition that earned it public respect over decades. That respect won’t return until these institutions return to that mission."

The Wall Street Journal bashed elite institutions in American society, with Harvard as just one example, for undermining "their own credibility and fuel[ing] public cynicism."

Those "elite institutions," the editorial board continued, have chosen to look down on and demean "half of the country that doesn’t share their views" as being "racist," bigoted or "anti-science." "

Ok, why do you say it is surprising they say it is hard to define “merit” when they cannot define “woman”? Seems understandable to me.

Not sure I see a real point by Hess.
Is it she did not believe in it but only embraced DEI to get ahead?
So?

DEI ideology has overwhelmed everyone involved at Harvard that it is impossible to tell who is truly culpable.

How do you stump a group of professors?

Introduce your companion as a “meritorious woman.”

I am encouraged that there are people who have started to step up and speak to the insanity of wokeness and Demx.
I Want to feel hope

Some very good colleges that are not dominated by the woke agenda:

Hillsdale
U of Chicago
Washington & Lee
Dartmouth
Pepperdine
George Mason
Princeton
U of Virginia
Duke (maybe…?)
SMU
Tulane
BYU (snark about their academic rep if you must, but their alums tend to do very well)

6721, I agree totally with you on this. Problem is that right now there are too few of us to make a big impact - hopefully the numbers will grow. And one of the outcomes (I hope) will be a Conservative wave in the 2024 elections - toss the liberals out on their butts.
