Eagles Requesting Campus Changes

I suggest The University hire quality fee counsel to review any agreements concerning the building, funding, naming of those buildings prior to any decision. Look at the egg on the faces of the city officials in Houston when some dumbass awarded a contract to drill in Memorial Park. Baker Botts is a great law firm, but they were quick to grab the park back for Ima Hogg's estate.

Does the school have similar agreement on those buildings? Who paid for the statues?

Where would I draw the line? Probably at actual demands, or at least ones that were self-serving and were not justified.
Looks like this^^^^^ is where some of us will have to agree to disagree.
The "were not justified" part
This " justification" can only be accomplished utilizing some type of logic or reason that is deeply flawed, in my view, and is contrary to virtually everything I value and believe.

Thanks for the measured response, but I’d like to pin you down.

Is The Eyes a reasonable request?

If so, again let me know what specific demand would represent your Mendoza Line, that you would not cross.

If this remains ambiguous, it will never stop.

I wonder if any of this would be an issue if UT did not have a lot of $$$. I bet the puppet masters would leave us alone. Just saying!

Plan to Drill for Oil in Park Creates Dispute in Houston

Liddell Sapp was no match for Baker Botts. No drilling and the park continues to be a beautiful refuge in the middle of Houston, featuring public golf course, tennis courts, running trails, bike trails, arboretum. No war, no trial.

When someone that's contributed more than 557 yards and 6 TDs to the university decides to make his demands known, maybe then I'll pay attention. Until then, The Eyes of Texas are upon you...

This isn't just about Brendan Eagles. Losing one guy is not a big deal. The problem is I bet there are a substantial number of black players who agree with him, at least in part, on some of his "demands."

Coach/AD should meet with them and just sit down and listen. It doesn't mean they have to give them everything they want.

I would bet $1000 that if the coach/AD made an honest effort to listen and concede on half the list they provided, that at most we would lose Eagles and nobody else.

I don't agree with Eagles on the Eyes of Texas but at the minimum the coach should tell the players that it's not mandatory to sing it after every game.

If the coach/AD release a press statement saying that Eagles is a clown and there's no chance any of those list items will happen, then I'm telling you right now 30+ black players are going to walk. Good luck beating OU or anybody else in the Big 12 if that happens.

I do not think you realize that we are already done. The team is fractured. The players will rebel. They have been told UT is a racist, evil institution. They have been told, by Herman, that the fans are racist. Why would they play hard at this point? Politics are more important than winning now to the program as a whole.

If they give in to the demands, they lose all the ticket holders and big donors (which they will probably lose anyway). Without them, no one is paying Herman's salary or for first class facilities, etc.

The program is in the toilet either away. If you think winning is still on the table, you are delusional.

The only hope at this point is to fire Herman and release every player who is angry about the Eyes of Texas from scholarship and start over. Maybe we could save enough donors to win again in 5+ years. However, I think it is a lost cause.

These players are incredibly dumb because they just pissed off the donors who were going to pay their licensing fees for a cause that has nothing to do with ending racism.

I did not think "the destruction of Texas Football" was on the table for 2020, but man, this year keeps getting worse.

UT is "not making a statement until Monday" because they do not know what to do.

What’s new? Haven’t beaten them (consistently) in so long I cannot remember. I’ve sat thru lackluster seasons so long now I’d tolerate it some more if it meant maintaining some semblance of dignity and honor to those traditions I’ve held as part of The University.
The threat about recruits sounded like extortion to me, or at least made it sound more like demands than requests.
I am definitely on the side of sit down and talk. I only pray the players are mature enough to do so.

Any player supporting this crap will get nothing but ridicule regardless of their name, number, race or position. I’d be willing to bet Eagles does not graduate from Texas. He will stir this up and end up in the transfer portal. Good luck getting an offer though. No coach wants cancers on his team.

On some level this exercise seems counterfactual.

But I don’t have a problem being honest.

When I read this list, none of the things stood out to me as unreasonable. When I read about “The Eyes of Texas” I’ll be honest, I didn’t understand. I didn’t get why this was included. Then saw that they imply that athletes are required to sing. It seems like a no brained to me that they shouldn’t have to. Then I read about the blackface minstrel shows and I get it. It doesn’t affect me in the way that it would affect BIPOC, so I don’t know that is productive. “White guy doesn’t see problem with it” isn’t exactly an unpredictable or productive response. From my position of privilege, it doesn’t bother me in the way that it could bother others. I think an open dialogue, discussion, and research would be warranted. If they came back and gave a respectful and warranted response as to why it was staying, I don’t know that I’d be up in arms. But if I lose this tradition, I know that people matter more.

I don’t want to cop out, but you’re asking about a request that would be my line. But I don’t have all the information.

If, for example, some said to take down the bell tower that would make me say “what?!?” But if there were cause, I’m not saying I couldn’t be persuaded.

If the players were demanding change in a week or they’d quit the team, I may be more inclined to say goodbye (though I would hope that reaching out and having dialogue would change their minds).

If they said they refuse to play with white players, that would go too far.

If they said that athletes should have reduced academic requirements or conversely, make a requirement that all UT students take certain race/history classes, then that would seem outside of their scope and a bit too far.

Problem with Hook Em or Bevo? Yeah that would be hard. But would depend on what that problem is.

Those types of things.

This list, in comparison to those things, seems even more reasonable.

And his threat is extortion. Do what I tell you or else. Is it just me or wasn’t his original threat to not play? Now it’s not helping recruit.

Regardless of how it turns out, who wants this cancer recruiting anyway?

I’m waiting to see what Golden, Bohls, and (as mentioned earlier) Campbell, Young and Williams have to say.

“If” Golden & Bohls are, in unison, a dissenting voice, that will signal something. However, if all five support the demands, it’ll be game over for the argument, and then game over for the program.

It’s not only the BMDs that generate large amounts of money. It’s also the fans, like me, that will immediately stop purchasing licensed apparel. That’s big dollars as well.

In fact, if the University caves we should consider a demonstration, and a mass burning of our Longhorn gear. Can you see that? Mostly old white guys burning their burnt orange gear?
Probably be a pretty good sized fire.

A human being, surely you have been offended before. If not, you are indeed quite privileged.

You may well be right. I just saw the Atlanta police chief resign earlier and a police officer fired because last night a man who was being handcuffed decided to fight with officers and steal one of their tasers and then attempt to use said taser on the officers and was shot and killed in the process.

We are in a time right now where there is no due process and police officers are literally now being castrated from protecting their own lives simply because someone wants to fight with them and endanger them. The entire Atlanta police force should resign in protest because their mayor and police chief are now putting their lives at risk.

Yeah I’ve been offended. I’ve never felt offended because of my race. My whiteness has not been the cause of any struggles in my life.

I can assure you, believe it or not, there are worse or equal things one can be offended over. Also, all people can choose to let their feelings control them or they can control and overcome their feelings.

I’m not into extortion so if 30+ black, white or green players threaten to leave if their demands aren’t met, cool. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

This is much bigger than beating OU.

By the way, this happened to the University of Missouri a few years ago... how did it turn out for them?

Believe me, the UT program is toast at this point.

Everyone has read and no where are they saying they are quitting the team or refusing to play, right?

They’re saying that if they’re completely ignored they won’t participate in recruiting or help get donations.

Why would they?

Days before the University, athletic department, and coaches all told them they mattered, their voices would be heard, and that they were committed to reducing systemic racism. So if these people flat out ignore them, why would they participate in these two specific activities?

Am I missing something?

Funny how different things are observed by different people. 23 draws a line at Bevo and or Hookem but not the ‘Eyes’. Me? The Eyes have it. Bevo, no way he leaves but as cool as he is, especially with the kids and all, but I’d quickly let him go before the Eyes. To me that song is Texas and when the words “the eyes of Texas are upon you” are sung that is exactly what I think of at the time. I’ve always imagined that as a player it’s a lot harder to sing and/or listen to when you lose. That’s what it means to me. As far has having to sing it? BS they font all sing now. Heck it irritates me when I don’t see them with Horns up during the playing. But I’m just an old sap.

Can't argue with this at all.
