Dumb Political Correctness

I had to laugh at this.

This article and others like it is why I read The Atlantic despite it's leftism. The most interesting point is near the bottom of the article.

That article was interesting, and pretty good, although I think its one flaw is assuming that people's self-evaluations are accurate.

This article and others like it is why I read The Atlantic despite it's leftism. The most interesting point is near the bottom of the article. Democrats who go to college and follow the news are actually dumber about Republicans and their views than those who don't. And it isn't a lack knowledge. It is affirmatively believing something that is wrong. They know something that isn't so.

Man...you went right to the attacking college educated liberals as the most "interesting part of the article" as if on cue for the theme of the article. Not sure that was your intention but it was ironic nonetheless.

Good article and it very aptly explains the West Mall. We clearly need more posts explaining the other sides views. ;)

Than again, it's also sad this post was lost amid the FF drivel. Such is the state of the West Mall.

It's interesting because the opposite should be occurring in colleges. We should be becoming more knowledgeable about various points of view and the people that hold them. Instead, we're becoming less, and as the article suggests, it's a much bigger problem with Democrats. Something's wrong when that's happening.

It's the difference between getting an indoctrination and an education.

The real problem is that in the internet age we are all seeking confirmation bias. The less educated aren't as keen on the internet, or have as much time, which accounts for some of the difference.

The internet certainly drives confirmation bias and is a major part of our general polarization. I would definitely agree with that. However, I don't think the disparity of internet use between college educated people and non-college educated people is enough to account for such a big difference. Keep in mind that anybody with a smartphone and a data plan can be on the internet. You don't have to have much money or education to do it.

Either way, a college education should give people the discernment to look beyond superficial internet analysis of politics. It clearly does not.

Your underestimating the technical divide. I work for a luxury retail company with fulfillment centers in rural USA. A consistent conversation in the last 6 months have centered on how Technology illiterate the employees in those fullfillment centers are. My role is to modernize the employees systems and I'm consistently told these employees are carrying flip phones and applying through the local library.

My experience while vacationing to my hometown in NE reinforced this. My farmer uncle, who has a Computer Science degree still only has access to dialup internet access on his farm, one that sits less than a mile outside city limits in the largest town in the West half of the state.

In short, the technology divide between urban and rural communities is MASSIVE.

I don't doubt that the technology divide is substantial among those who don't have access to it. However, there are two points to remember. First, we aren't talking about that many people - certainly not enough to lopside the stats that much. 81 percent of Americans have smartphones. 73 percent have broadband at home. 90 percent use the internet at least some. Link.

Second, the impact of college only seems to impact Democrats. As the article states, Republicans who go to college don't misjudge Democrats more than Republicans who don't graduate from high school.

Prosecutors have told a judge that an avowed white supremacist responsible for a deadly car attack in Charlottesville, Virginia, was “like a kid at Disney World” during his high school trip to a German concentration camp.

FBI Special Agent Wade Douthit read grand jury testimony Friday from a high school classmate of James Alex Fields Jr. The classmate said Fields appeared happy when touring the Dachau camp and remarked, “This is where the magic happened.”

The statement provoked audible gasps from a packed courtroom crowd that included dozens of people who were injured and the mother of a woman who was killed when Fields deliberately drove his car into a group of counterprotesters at a white nationalist rally in 2017.

The “Unite the Right” rally on Aug. 12, 2017, drew hundreds of racist Trumpster white nationalists to Charlottesville to protest the planned removal of a statue of traitor and Confederate General, Robert E. Lee.

Again, what's a "hate crime"? He should be in jail for his actions. Neither he, nor anybody, should be jailed for what people imagine is in their heads or hearts.

This guy didn't leave anything up to the imagination. He left a trail for everyone to know what was in his head and heart.

And he should rot in jail for his actions, not for whatever you may think about his mental state. I am not for the thought police, not under any circumstance.

Yeah you are. The difference is he wasn't a liberal. Somehow that exceeds being a White Supremacist in your book for disdain. At the very least it draws more condemnation from you.

Funny, I don't think you should rot in jail. I believe the way you and other liberals think is ultimately destructive to this country, but I don't advocate imprisoning you or them for it.

I don't think this kid's mom (Where the hell is his dad to be the voice of sanity??) is trying to expose him to pedophilia. However, she is selfish and so blinded by political correctness that she is delusional. Obviously the mom is getting all kinds of publicity and praise from the LGBT activist clan and those who sympathize with it, which is virtually all of the media and popular culture. She's benefiting.

So where does the PC element fit in? Well, in most contexts, we know that if dudes are howling and throwing money at somebody dancing on stage, it's because of sexual pleasure. If the girls at Sugar's decided to do their routines in sweats and a big t-shirt, nobody would waste his time or money. If they do it topless, dudes will show up and throw cash at them. There's a reason for that.

Suppose that instead of this being a boy, it was a 12 year old girl dancing scantily clad and dudes were throwing money at her and howling at her. Everybody would call her parents monsters for letting her do it, and they'd rightly call the guys at the club pedophilic perverts for watching and "enjoying" her.

So why not say the same thing in this context? It's because it's politically incorrect to discuss gay men in the context of pedophilia and child molestation. If someone did that, he or she would be demonized for "perpetuating stereotypes" about gay men. However, anybody with any sense can see that regardless of any stereotypes, what's going on here is perverse and pedophilic. Yes, the guys cheering and throwing money to want to have sex with the boy on stage for the same reasons guys at Sugar's want to have sex with the girls on stage. That's why they act the same way.

Does this mean every gay guy is a pedophile? No. Would I let the guys who watch this boy babysit my kid? No.

The problem with 'hate crime' enhancements is that it opens up the door to appeal or, worse, an inability to GET the conviction in the first place. Prosecute the offense that actually can be proven, specifically the assaultive act and, in this instance, the death of another person.

Hate crime provisions are one of the dumbest things ever placed into criminal codes...and I say that as a member of a class that is ostensibly covered BY such laws.

Yuck
Unstated is that they were all "political progressives" - we know this by simple default
--Bad word warning--

Given that California has been insolvent for a while now, offering free college and free medical care to illegals (a new bill puts some of them into Medi-Cal) seems like real clear thinking to me.

Even crazier is that legal, tax paying Cali residents who are without health care can be penalized by the state. Free health care for some groups. No health care plus penalties for another group. No wonder Texas is filling up with Cali refugees.

They need to break up California into 2 or 3 separate states. Then the working class in Central and Eastern California would have a chance to make it work for them.

Perhaps. However, the plan that almost went on the ballot would have been a disaster for Republicans. It would have yielded 4 safe Democratic senate seats and 2 swing seats that would often but not always elect Democrats.
