Dining next to a celebrity...

May father seems to meet famous people in random situations. He shared a hot tub with Alonzo Mourning and rode an elevator with Kevin Costner (and two blondes).

He said that Kevin Costner was a real nice guy and even initiated the conversation.

I have sat next to Madonna at a sushi bar (Nobu Manhattan) and Jullianne Moore at another sushi bar (cant remember).

I mean right next to them.

In both cases I ignored them utterly.

Ms. Moore is unbelievably hot IRL.

Had lunch next to Thom Yorke and family in Florence a few years ago.

I was in LA last fall staying at the Four Seasons. I got back to the room at about 2am and the lock and the door broke. While security was trying to open the door, John Legend and his woman went into the room next to us. But like somebody else said, seeing celebs in LA is no big deal. They're everywhere.

I've had a chance to see/meet a lot of "celebs". During college I was a bellman at a small 4-star hotel in the Seattle area. Dionne Warwick stayed there for months. Privately we joked that she "received the group rate". She was a Diva in every sense of the word.

The hotel also was the team hotel for the Seattle Seahawks so all their free agents and draft picks were brought into the hotel. So, a lot of the NFL's top players came through the hotel at one time or another.

Ahmad Rashad was one of the nicest celebrities and biggest tippers ($100 to carry a single bag when he left the hotel).

My wife and I ate next to Alex Rodriguez when he was still with Seattle. He was with an uber hottie. We let him be. My wife is a huge fan of his. She had recently had one of our sons so was very well endowed. While we were eating she felt something warm in her chest area only to realize that her breast was sitting in the warm olive oil on the table. Her shirt had nearly soaked up all the oil. Needless to say, she was extra embarassed this happened while she was sitting next to ARod.

I saw Ricardo Antonio Chavira who plays Carlos (Gabby/Eva’s husband) on Desperate Housewives at this Cuban bar Chango’s in SA. My friend and I were standing next to him at the bar trying to push our way through the crowd of girls that was surrounding him. We didn’t acknowledge him except for the fact he made some drunk comment to us when we got to the bar. We somehow ended up putting our round of birthday shots on his tab, so that was the only good thing. But he was one of the celebrities that really wanted the attention from everyone.

I see the Spurs players all the time in SA. They are always at the HEB in Leon Springs. No one seems to bother them but tell them good luck etc. All of them are very nice.

And, it wasn’t at a restaurant, but I first met David Robinson about a year ago shopping. He is one of my biggest heroes, so I want to just say hi and that he has been my biggest hero etc. Well, he ended up stopping and talking to me for about 10 minutes. It was the coolest thing ever and he really is the nicest person I’ve ever met. He didn’t have to stop, but he did and took the time out to give me advice etc. I left in shock; such an awesome experience.

once i met mike leach in hawaii.

even cooler - after the 2005 rose bowl game against michigan, me and my peeps went to roscoes chicken and waffles. there was a posse in the parking lot, and i was a little nervous. i'm talking about 20-25 people, many of them african american, and many wearing basketball jerseys and blinged out. the reason i was nervous was there were 20 ******* people in the parking lot just standing there. they parted like the red sea as i went to park, but they were definitely checking us out in the car. disconcerting. who just stands in a parking lot?

we parked, went inside, got seated, and there's ******* allen iverson. that sleeve he wears covers up a naked chick tattoo on his arm. i wondered earlier why 20 people were hanging out in the parking lot. allen ******* iverson's posse does. guess they were waiting for allen to eat his chicken and waffles.

well, he's settling his bill and leaving. we leave him alone, because he doesn't look happy. i'm not sure iverson EVER looks happy, but whatever.

so we figure we got our celebrity quota for the night in LA.

wrong.

not 5 minutes after iverson leaves, a man named vince young walks in with HIS posse, most of which was obviously family. this is right after literally the best college football game i'd ever seen in person, and right after he made that promise to come back to the rose bowl next year.

our table, all decked out in burnt orange, gives him the horns - he smiles, shyly, and gives them back, and settles into the back corner table and slouches, obviously tired.

we left him alone with his family. but still kickass to see him rolling into roscoes chicken and waffles.

Had lunch next to Mack and Colt right before the start of the '06 season. Didn't bother them.

And Augie is perpetually at the bar at Eddie V's, in my experience.

Rob Thomas and Matchbox 20 (in their early days) asked me where to party in Kansas City. They were in our hotel during the Big XII basketball tournament.

My sister, who used to be a ballgirl for the Mavs when she was like 12, got to rebound for Shaq during warmups. She also got to go into the locker room and meet all of the players on the home and visiting teams.

I was at the Final Four workouts at Reunion Arena in 1986, and Dick Vitale came and sat next to me. We talked for quite awhile as we watched the shootaround, and when he left, my dad asked me if I knew who he was. I didn't. I was 8.

I've had several celebrity experiences but the best story involves a friend of mine, Todd, who lives in Minneapolis. He had always wanted to go see a baseball game at Wrigley Field so finally he convinced his girlfriend to go with him on vacation in Chicago. The only way she would spend her vacation in Chicago, though, was with Todd's promise that they would stay in the very luxurious Palmer House Hilton. So they get there and Todd goes off to watch a day game at Wrigley. His girlfriend went to eat at one of the restaurants in the Palmer House and in walks Michael Jordan and Ahmad Rashad, who got the table next to her. She really couldn't care less about either of them and, in fact, she didn't know who Ahmad was until her waiter told her. But she's a chick who doesn't like sports so she just left them in peace. But, still, it was cool for her because they were there for over an hour. So she goes back to the room and a few minutes later Todd gets back and he's all happy because he had just fulfilled this fantasy of seeing a game a Wrigley and because the Cubs had won UNTIL his girlfriend lays it on him that she'd sat next to Michael Jordan for an hour. Todd's a huge sports fan (hence wanting to go to Wrigley) and he said he was so depressed that he'd missed the opportunity to eat next to Michael Jordan that he couldn't enjoy the rest of their time their. Meanwhile, his girlfriend, who could have cared less about MJ, had a great time.

Year's ago I went over to the Dry Creek Cafe to watch the sunset, probably mid 70's or so. There were a few folks up there enjoying the view and the tepid beer. One of them was Steve Worster.
This girl recognizes him, and starts getting all gushy, going "oh, it's Steve Worster, you're the reason I went to UT, I remember going WOO, WOO..." Somewhat embarassing for the guy, we were all laughing.
I think it better to leave the public figures alone and in peace.
