Dining next to a celebrity...

I was once leaving Boulevard in San Fran. As we were exiting our table the man leaving stopped to let my wife and sister in law walk in front of him like a gentleman would. I look the man in the eye to say thanks and it was Ronnie Effing Lott. I am a diehard Cowboys fan, but despite that RL was about my favorite DB in the NFL ever. I hated to bother him, but I did ask him for a pic when we got outside. He was cool with it, and was very humble at the degree of appreciation I had for him as a player.

I was next to Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty at Luling BBQ in Houston not long ago. I said hello, and told him I enjoyed their music. He was cool, and I am pretty sure I was the only one in the entire place that recognized him. He was pretty cool.

years ago I sat at a table next to Sandra Bernhardt. That's been a repressed memory. Thanks for bringing it all back to the surface. The chomping and slurping, the yelling, the cackle....God I won't be able to eat for days now that the mental scar has been picked at.

Evander Holyfield was on my flight once. We went out to the runway and waited about an hour while thunderstorms pounded the airport. After an hour we went back to the gate and eventually they canceled the flight. Nobody said a word to him because he looked really pissed off the whole time.

Saw McConaughey walking through the airport in Houston. He was looking pretty scuzzy, with greasy hair, wrinkled clothes, and sunglasses on. He looked like he didn't want to be seen.

Saw Angelina Jolie a couple of times while she was dropping off her kids at daycare when they were staying Austin recently. They're gone now. My wife saw Brad there another time. I asked her if she ****** him, she said no but she thought about it.

I'm an advocate for leaving them alone. If it's someone you like, they deserve the peace and quiet. If it not someone you like, their ego doesn't need to be stroked anymore with continuous attention.

Leave them alone?????? I think not.

If I ever cross paths with Lt. Sobel I will shout HI-O SILVER CURRAHEE!!!!!!!!!!

I always leave them alone, except...

Over spring break in Hawaii, I was in line to buy baseball tickets and I noticed Fred Willard a few spots up. I told him that I loved his work in "Fernwood 2 Night" and he busted out laughing.

I had dinner with Mike Rowe at a Texas Roadhouse in East Texas. People came up to him non-stop during the whole meal...probably about 30 or 40. Pictures, autographs, the whole deal. One person brought his nasty kid with **** all over his face up to him and said "Mike, here's a dirty job for ya, clean off my kid's face for me!"

He did it with a smile on his face and commented later to me that "this was the price of admission" to being a celebrity and he didn't mind it.

After dinner he bussed his own plate to the kitchen because the waiter said the kitchen staff would like to meet him. Good guy.

My wife and I were eating a Morton's in SF during the MLB All-Star weekend and Ivan Rodriguez and his family were seated next to us. We left him alone. Also stood next to a bunch of other All-Stars(and their families) as we waited for our coats. We left them alone, as well.

The few times it's happened , I just leave them alone. Maybe just a nod when I'm walking by.

Augie actually approached Cajunhorn and I at Cedar Street a few years ago on a Friday night after the aggy football game. I think he was just bored and wanted to talk to somebody. When he said, "My name's Augie." I just laughed and said "I know." Had a couple of cocktails and talked a little about Omaha that summer before. He's a nice guy.

There is no way I would recognize the vast majority of people you mentioned on this post. I'm a big football fan, but I"d probably recognize about 5 guys in the NFL or on the horns. Wouldn't even recognize Ricky now that he cut his dreads.

So, what I'm sayinig is I have no idea what I'd do if I was eating next to a pro athlete probably, as I wouldn't recognize them out of uniform. I don't care to go introduce myself to some jerkwater celebrity.

We did see Newman in Rome at the airport with a big group. Of course someone went by with the hello Newman bit. I'm sure he's only heard that eleventy billion times in his life.

TxArch-yes, we were the couple at the table just before yours, and in a booth just on the other side of your table was Joe Ely and party. Hope your spouse (?) had a happy birthday.
Had I known a famous HornFans poster was dining in the same room, I would have introduced myself and asked for an autograph.

With my grandpa's connections to MLB, I've been to over a half dozen of All Star games.

Most ball players are punks but some are nice.

cool:
tony gwynn (signed every single person's autograph and spoke the whole time)

john wetteland: awesome guy. Even took off his world series ring and let this one dude put it on!

edgar renteria: i think it must have been his first or second all star game. but he came through with his smoking hot wife. he stopped and signed autographs on one side of the line, while his wife went and grabbed stuff from the other line for him to sign and she brought it back.

matt williams: giants slugger was cool

glavine, maddux and smoltz all walked in together. glavine signed a few and the other two watched and took pics with fans, but no autographs.

frank thomas

sosa

punks:
Moises Alou
Kenny Lofton
Jack McDowell
Mark McGwire
Bonilla
Pudge Rodriguez and Juan Gonzalez
Kirby Pucket
Albert Belle

and the biggest douchebag of all of course was Bonds. I was walking around the hotel all by myself and saw him sneak through the side door and started walking towards the elevators where I was walking. So he sees me and I see him. I look right at him and just kept walking right by him. Didn't even bother.

THe next day, at the all star headquarters was a big brunch for all the MLB teams and a lot of players. Well I am in line scooping up a bunch of bacon and i hear this annoying winey voice complaining about the size of the orange juice glasses. Then we sit down and he sits at a table behind me and immediately starts cussing out his agent "f you!! this is what I F'n pay you for, deal with this $hit," etc etc. I really wanted to knock the crap out of him

Letterman was cool the time I saw him. He shook my hand.

Hell, I almost don't count Longhorns.

Back when I was going to most all of the UT baseball games, where I sat behind the UT dugout and was, uh, one of the more "enthusiastic" fans, I bumped into Augie at a steakhouse as I was leaving. We smiled at each other and I told him something like "nice game today" -- he answered with "are we gonna hear you out there tomorrow?" with a big ****-eatin grin on his face. Augie recognized ME -- that was pretty cool.

I saw Lily Tomlin at Vespaio once. We were too occupied by the guys determined to crowd us out of our booth to hassle her.

my old man ate dinner next to barry switzer back when he was coaching the cowboys (speaking of repressed memories). got him to sign a napkin "Hook 'em Horns, Barry Switzer". i doubt we still have it.

Hassling Lily Tomlin? What? Does she even qualify as a celeb?

Used to work downtown, so I've seen more than I can name. One time, Treat Williams came in with a date and we sat him alone in this one room. He requested to sit in the crowded room instead. So some of them like attention.

I leave them alone, but it comes with the job.

Luke Wilson was eating next to us at Guerro's about two years ago. A few college aged girls came up and chatted w/ him, but for the most part, people left him alone.

Same story as Dallas the tiger, same place, but he was there having a drink flying solo. Didn't feel the need to bother the guy.

I was in a bar one Saturday afternoon many years ago. There were only 3 other people in the place, so we ended up sitting with them and talking for an hour and a half. They were talkimg about being in town making a movie, etc., but I remained clueless. When we left, my date said how neat that was talking to Wayne Rogers (of MASH) and only then did I realize that was him. So I was totally cool without even knowing it!

saw miranda lambert a few weeks at a reno casino (playing there the next night). me and my buddy were hammered drunk and were trying to be discreet/funny (basically drunkasses) and had to call her out. she tried playing it off and finally submitted. ended up being cool and inviting us to the show... VERY hot in person. not a lick of makeup on at 1230am and still good looking.

Sat next to Mack & Sally at Alligator Grill (now Waterloo) at 360/2222. It was the evening of 09/11/01, so nobody was in the mood for small talk.

When we got up to leave, I flashed the horns and said hook 'em. He smiled and replied accordingly. On any other day, it would have been a great experience.

The other night I was eating dinner with the girlfriend at a pizza place in Uptown Dallas. Chief David Knuckle (in uniform) and his wife sat next to us. It took all I had not to ask him if he liked his gig.
