Dec 20 NSD Thread

if they could pull a couple of DLs on top of our unsigned verbals, i'd be fine.

We are still after several more DLs besides Coburn and, based on what Herman said, we expect to sign some more

DT Keondre Coburn
DT Bobby Brown (just de-commited from aggy)
DT Moro Ojomo (just starting to blow up nationally, will be a battle)
DE Joseph Ossai (seems destined to go full aggy)
DE Courtre Alexander (most CBs to us but EJHolland just moved his to cloudy)
DE Daniel Carson (not sure if we gave up here)
DE Max Wright (aggy, some think he is destined for medical squad)

It's going to be a battle for all of the top players at all positions who did not sign early. Programs will be trying to poach our guys just as hard as we will be trying to poach theirs.

I did not hear Herman say or imply anything of the sort. Would you mind pulling a quote for context?

That was sort of funny.

Urban Meyer was complaining about that within the context of his NSD1 presser. Here is a coach with the #1 overall class, who was supposed to be talking about the players he just signed early, but who cannot help himself but whine about things other coaches say. He did not say Herman specifically but he was answering a question about losing Anthony Cook. He was angry. Said some of the players poor tOSU was after had told him another coach said "if you dont sign early, we are pulling your offer."

Yesterday the CB had Brown 93% to Alabama. I'm puzzled at the problems on the D-line recruiting given how good our defense was. I would think they saw the coaching and would want to get in on that. It's amazing we only have one commit (Coburn) and he didn't sign). Not whining or saying we're doomed, just puzzled as I said.

I think some of the other guys we are after are better than Brown anyway

I'm not greedy. I just want 3 of those.

A snippet from Holland on AA --

Ayodele Adeoye’s recruitment came to an anticlimactic finish when he pulled a Texas hat out of his backpack and said he was making the ‘obvious’ choice and sticking with Texas. However, there was nothing obvious about his recruitment. Sources told Horns247 that Adeoye gave OU a silent commitment following his OV to Norman hence the flurry of Crystal Ball picks. He was expected to flip to the Sooners soon after, but Texas did a tremendous job of fending off its Big 12 rival and securing him down the stretch.

Holland's snippet on Grandy --

The Mikey Grandy situation was crazy. According to a source close to Grandy, the JUCO offensive lineman committed to UCLA behind the scenes and had a graphic ready to go. However, Tom Herman and his staff worked Grandy all morning and got him to change his mind. After hours of pondering and waiting for a new Texas graphic, Grandy sided with the Longhorns and filled a major need up front. This was truly a signing day victory for the staff.
All the UCLA folks (their version of us) were flipping out over Grandy on their boards. They thought they had him.

We need the RB and the DT who are currently committed (which makes 25). Then 2-4 more OL/DL.

There has been a long running rumor of a grad transfer OL we are set with. Name not released yet.

Also, there is one more JUCO OT out there who is athletic and better suited for LT than Grandy. Jamir Johnson (6'5,278) is not an EE which is why he is not a hot topic right now. He will sign in the regular period and not arrive until the summer. We are in the hunt and are trying to get him to OV in January. He might fill the big need at an unsettled position.

Here is another article of landing Grandy --
"Herman's pixie dust helps UT fill big need up front"
There was no way the Longhorns could have struck out with all of their midyear JUCO offensive line target. And Herman made sure they didn’t.

Never count out Tom Herman on the recruiting trail. Never.

With their back against the wall, Herman and Derek Warehime rose to the occasion and landed a signature from junior college offensive lineman Mikey Grandy.

Just 24 hours ago, things looked bleak up front for the Longhorns. Noah Banks committed to Florida, Badara Traore intended to stick with LSU, Levon Livingston never made it in for an official visit and Mikey Grandy was leaning towards UCLA.

But then Herman sprinkled some of that famous magical pixie dust on the situation.

According to a source close to Grandy, the three-star prospect was locked in with UCLA and let Chip Kelley and his staff know that he would be returning to the West Coast — Grandy is originally from California.

Grandy made an official visit to UCLA a couple of weeks ago, and the Bruins seemed to hold the advantage. Even after making an official visit to Texas over the weekend, Grandy had every intention to go to UCLA.

But Texas never gave up.

The Longhorns staff spent the entire morning of the first day of the Early Signing Period on the phone with Grandy. It’s unclear exactly what was said, but Texas was able to win him over just hours before his decision.

Herman has pulled some rabbits out his hat this recruiting cycle, but this might be the most important one yet.

Texas has almost no depth along the offensive line heading into spring. And Grandy will be asked to come in and immediately fill the void left by Connor Williams, who decided to make an early jump to the NFL.

At 6-foot-5, 305 pounds, Grandy impressed on the JUCO scene this season and has the upside to thrive in Austin. He will enroll in January and have three years of eligibility remaining.

....5) Figures Herman will look in on Bobby Brown (no mention of him being an Alabama lean now).....

If Brown does go Bama, which most of the sites say will be the case, then maybe it will help kick Vernon Jackson our way. Although I read somewhere Jackson thinks he might want to be a RB in college where as we want him on the DL.

So that contradicts what I heard from Randy Rogers (aka the rumor mill) this morning on the radio.

Yeah, some of the other sites too speculated he would fax it in towards the end if this 3-day window. I think they were going by what Herman said in the presser.
But this seems to be coming directly from the person that matters the most.
So, we will see. Herman has shown an ability to keep working things until he gets what he wants.

It just may be the kid wants to get the biggest bang for each event. This is a lifetime moment being in the championship game. It makes sense to not want mingle the two (the LOI ceremony). But maybe if they win he will want to sign that LOI as if it was a bottle of champagne to crack on the side of a ship...

It's hard because paparazzi media reverse the issue of focus.

You have the biggest game of your life coming up and you want to focus on that instead of what they get their clicks off of? Well, young man, now you get 4 times the distraction as people fabricate stories that may or may not be true, but didn't come from you.

OK, so we have 19 signed NLIs
+ 2 more committed but so far unsigned -- RB Ingram and DT Coburn who together would put this class at 21
At his presser, Coach said he thinks 27-29 recruits in this class.
If so, that leaves 6-8 spots

2 OLs - Johnson + 1? (I dont think the purported grad transfer counts in these #s)
1 Slot WR - Keys? (or Waddle, Moore, Bush)
1 DT - Ojomo? (Brown)
1 DE - Alexander? (but Ark just offered) and/or V. Jackson, Carson, Ossai?
1 OLB - Bonitto or White
1 TE - Nic McTear? (maybe grade issues)

update -- sounds like Vernon Jackson wont sign with Alabama early and will visit Texas in Jan

Cook's NLI officially faxed in now
Some people were trying to make something of that

It did worry me. The first link in Dionysus' first post still doesn't list him. It even has Grandy listed who was at 9pm last night, but no Cook.

Just as a side note; Dandydon.com (LSU Homer site) is gushing about cleaning up in the trenches saying that Orgeron gets an A+ for the linemen he recruited.
