Cotton Bowl Update

Thanks for the pics.

I would expect this to make the TX-OU game a bit louder. It looks like that double deck structure in the endzones will allow for a bunch of new and better toilets and concessions. Maybe this will reduce the number of fans around here calling for moving the game and ruining one of the greatest lasting college football traditions.

I had an interview with Charter Construction( the GC) and they took us on-site. They told us the bathroom/concessions would increase by 60% and that the seating would be right at 92,000. Also, the added concessions and restrooms will be arranged below the bleachers so that you can view the fair from the concourse.

The seats added so far are only on the Texas side but the ou side will be ready by the fall. the ou side loses seats because it must wrap around the jumbo-tron which was installed around 10' too close to the field. i think the lost seats will be compensated for by giving some of ours to ou.

it is sad that the old blue/white seats are gone, but adding the bleachers is why they were able to reach 92,000.

if i was a dallas taxpayer, i would be pissed my money is going to pay this much to renovate this dump of a stadium..

What everyone fails to remember is that under the new agreement signed between Texas and OU, very soon the home team will get to select the side their fans will sit in.

Texas had complained for sometime about the Okies having the tunnel and hurling **** and insults at our players, band, and spirit organizations. The Okies have complained for years that Texas has an advantage of being in the enclosed end (louder), that Bevo gets to be on display instead of in the tunnel for their schooner, looking into the sun as the afternoon progresses, & the fact that a small group of their fans have to sit in our endzone to make up for seats lost because of the tunnel. Add to that the fact that the North side looks directly at the replay board & they are itching to sit on the north end.

I don't know when the new agreement goes into effect, but don't be too surprised when we find ourselves on the south side of the Cotton Bowl for a game.

The agreement is already in effect, and Texas declined to move last year.

And for the poster who complained that this venue was a dump; I suppose when they build something you consider newer, bigger and "better" than Jerryworld, you'll want to move the game there - even if it's in OKC or Houston or God knows where!!!

It's a football stadium, for God's sake - and they play one of the best college games in history there. If you need more creature comforts, then watch it on TV from the Four Seasons or something.

10 mil is a relatively small price for the number of seats they are adding. there are several other renovations that could have taken place (like an underground club) that just would not fit in the budget.

i got 10 mil from this site...its the only number i ever saw. maybe it was just for the first phase of replacing the seats with bleachers.

They indicated they were negotiating with a current bowl as well as a couple of possible new start-ups.

Anyone have any idea as to who might move their bowl game to Fair Park.

My first thought was the Fort Worth Bowl might make it's way over to Fair Park, but it was mentioned later in the article that the Fair Park people thought the area could support three bowl games. Their list included the Ft. Worth Bowl or Armed Forces Bowl or whatever was included as one of the three.

I actually think it is a good investment. I like Dallas, but the fact is that Dallas is Generic-Town, USA. We do painfully little in the way of cool events akin to Fiesta in San Antonio or SXSW in Austin or Mardi Gras in New Orleans.

These aren't things that show up on any financial ledger. They are just things that give a city personality and make it enjoyable and liveable. They are things that make a city a community. And since businesses relocate to communities and people move to communities, that's important both from a financial and psychological standpoint.

Texas-OU is one of the few things that Dallas does that is a community event. Were Dallas to lose it, it would be horrible for the city and its residents. Perhaps not from a financial standpoint, but certainly from a "soul" standpoint.

Fifty Million is a small price for a soul, wouldn't you say?

And by the way, people on this board will retort that I am a long time critic of Arlington's investment in JerryWorld, and accuse me of hypocricy. But if they recall, I have only been a critic of the view that JerryWorld was a good financial decision that will actually make money for Arlington and its residence. If Arlington thinks it's worth $375 Million to be able to say "Home of the Cowboys" on their city limits signs, then I say good for them. That's a legitimate and realistic reason to consider shelling out that kind of money.

Another thing to keep in mind is the impact that TX/OU has on the Fair. I'm afraid that the Fair may head downhill should the game be moved from Fair Park. That would be a huge blow to Dallas.

To reiterate mdmost's point, the opening of the DART rail line in 2009 is going to be huge. The DART station is going to be right outside the front gate of the State Fair--you won't even have to cross the street to get there.

Personally, I think that is going to be a kick-*** experience. I'll park at the Mockingbird Station and take a train full of fans down to Fair Park. And whenever I'm ready, I'll just stumble back to the front gate and take a train back and maybe hit Trinity Hall at Mockingbird Station. No parking, no traffic jams, no walking through sketchy neighborhoods.

Well technically, Jerry World can boast having more "seats" but those are really standing room only. Given our fans are pissy over seats at the CB, you really think they want to pay an *** load to stand the whole game? Especially the older fans?

I live in Arlington, and really support the new stadium. That said, I see only good from the Cotton Bowl renovations, and welcome them.

Look, Texas will probably play a game in the new Arlington stadium sometime in the next few years- a Cotton Bowl game or a B12 championship game. Texas fans can then decide which experience is better for them. Until then, I only see good things coming from the CB getting bigger.

I also see the new stadium as being a good thing, because now the game can stay in the metroplex indefinitely, even if Dallas decides to stop supporting the old stadium.

I can see it now. If we play in Irving after the CB contract is up, we'll be playing at an outlet mal.

I think you just want to get in JerryWorld without having to get financing. Don't worry. I'm sure once the Cotton Bowl replaces the Fiesta Bowl as the Big XII BCS tie-in, we'll get to see it plenty. I'm not a traditionalist by any means, but I see no advantage to going to JerryWorld.

See my thread on this very board about that issue.

I didn't realize how bad the neighborhood around JerryWorld is. It easily gives Fair Park a run for its money.
