New Yankee stadium now at $1.3 Billion

Nice

Steinbrenner's got a bigger pocketbook than Jones

The city retains ownership of the land, but I believe the $1.3B tag is a little skewed. Supposedly that includes several hundred million dollars for parking garages and highway improvements.

I would also guess that compared to Arlington, the cost of construction is higher in NYC.

From keeping track of Yankee Stadium construction, like the new Giants stadium and Wembley Stadium, land costs push them over. Yankee Stadium is also constructed of a steel frame.

Chunk of land in the tristate area near I-95, or swamp in Arlington, TX? Real estate is what pushes Yankee Stadium over Jerry. Amenities will be nearly equal.

yea, that was my first thought too. The architecture seems a bit Romanesque, like something out of Gladiator, especially with the sky looking like that

Actually, the facade is intended to mirror the original, pre-renovation facade. Compare:

Incidentally, in searching for the above photos, I came across this old aerial of Uppermost Manhattan and the Lower Bronx straddling the Harlem River. It shows just how close Yankee Stadium was from the Polo Grounds.

Does Wrigley count as "multi-purpose" since the Bears played there for 50 years? If so, the Yankee Stadium is also multi-purpose since it was home to the New York Football Giants after the Polo Grounds was torn down in 1956 until Giants Stadium was built in 1973.

Off the top of my head, other, more modern multi-purpose stadia still in use for Major League Baseball are:
* Angel Stadium (home of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and former home of the Los Angeles Rams),

* The Metrodome (home of the Minnesota Twins and the Minnesota Vikings),

* Dolphin Stadium (home of the Florida Marlins and Miami Dolphins),

* RFK Stadium (home of the Washington Nationals and former home of the Washington Redskins) and

* Shea Stadium (home of the New York Mets and former home of the New York Jets).

I don't know how you cannot consider Wrigley as not multi-purpose, since for more than half its history both football and baseball were played in it. The 1922 renovation was done specifically with the intent that it be able to fit a football field.

And that's not unusual for the era. Yankee Stadium, the Polo Grounds, Ebbets Field, Comiskey Park, Shibe Park, and Tiger Stadium all hosted both NFL and MLB teams. The truth is that the trend towards baseball-only stadia is only fairly recent.

The Yankees aren't the most valuable team in sports, the Cowboys are.

According to Forbes, the List goes:

1.) Cowboys (took this spot for the first time last year)
2.) Redskins
3.) Manchester United
4.) Yankees/Pats (seem to alternate this year)
6.) Real Madrid

A couple of thoughts per this thread. First off I HATE the Yankees, but I think the new stadium looks AMAZING. I love the way that it pays tribute to the past, while staying fresh and up to date. I don't like the glass/steel look of Jerryworld, but I do believe it will also be an amazing facility.

Also, Jerry world is NOT built on swampland. I find that pretty funny that someone would even say that.
