Coronavirus

Actions have consequences. In Italy, two similar regions, Lombardy and Veneto, took different approaches to the community spread of the epidemic. Both mandated social distancing, but only Veneto undertook massive contact tracing and testing early on. Despite starting from very similar points, Lombardy is now tragically overrun with the disease, having experienced roughly 7,000 deaths and counting, while Veneto has managed to mostly contain the epidemic to a few hundred fatalities.

Similarly, South Korea and the United States had their first case diagnosed on the same day, but South Korea undertook massive tracing and testing, and the United States did not. Now South Korea has only 162 deaths, and an outbreak that seems to have leveled off, while the U.S. is approaching 10,000 deaths as the virus’s spread accelerates.

Consequences.

Do we know the political makeup of the dead? Are they mostly Democrats or Republicans? I'm thinking Democrats because they are dumber, but I have no solid intel to back that up.

Fauci apparently said today that 25-50% of the population is already infected. This is why the curve bends, it’s just not due to social distancing. If so, this is good for start of football season. I would have guessed 10-20% max, likely 1-10%. So color me surprised.

This is probably why the models are predicting high levels of death, etc. However, that assumes a lower level of asymptotic cases. In fact, the vast majority may be asymptotic, thus the reasoning we have high levels of infection and lower than expected deaths and hospitalizations.

The antibody test will resolve this riddle.

Government failing to adjust fast enough to a crisis is not a partisan issue.

No, but the Democrats and media are doing everything they can to make it one. It's very weak though, because they've been so inconsistent. They say the GOP didn't take it seriously early enough, but at the time they should have been acting, Democrats were saying we were overreacting and being xenophobic. They were saying to go out and party in New York City and Chinatown. They say we should have had stockpiles of masks, but the Obama and Bush Administrations also ignored agency warnings to build such a stockpile.

The bottom line is that almost nobody really saw this coming. The few who did (and there were a few from both parties) weren't listened to. And should they have really seen it coming? And what exactly should they have seen? Should they have seen the possibility of disease coming from overseas? Of course. Our people travel overseas all the time, and we're very open to foreign visitors. However, should they have seen a reasonable probability of a disease that would warrant the shutting down of almost the entire economy to contain? I don't think so. Why would they? We've never had to do anything like this before.

Wake up Mr. Deez

I'm awake. How is our situation similar to Italy's? Their cases and deaths per million dwarf ours. They're a far more crowded country, so it's much easier for the disease to spread. They're a much older country (in terms of age), so the cases they get are more likely to be lethal. I know it's your preferred narrative, but the case is just laughably weak.

If you want to make the argument that New York City is like Italy, then you might have a case. However, that reflects badly on Bill De Blasio who was telling people this was no big deal about ten minutes ago and to go on with their daily lives. In New York City, that means crowding tens of thousands into Yankee Stadium. It means millions cramming into buses and subways with people inches apart from each other. But you don't want him to look bad.

And of course, your people are saying we shouldn't even restrict travel. You were ok with letting thousands fly in from Wuhan everyday and cough on people. (Side note - I don't actually believe that. I think a President Obama or Biden would have ordered a travel ban, because it would have been suicidal and insane not to. However, large numbers of Democrats at least faked that they had a problem with doing so.)

My guess is you're not married nor in a serious relationship. With the negative view you have on life you wouldn't last 5 minutes in a serious union

When this shelter in place thing is over, PLEASE get laid.

He doesn't have to wait. He's still got Rosie Palm. She isn't social distancing.

How about Jerome Adams, Surgeon General? What a drama queen. He says that this will be the worst week of our lives. He compares it to Pearl Harbor and 9-1-1. He implies it’ll be worse than those events because they were local and this will be nationwide!

Dr. Birx doesn’t help much. She says this isn’t the week to go to the grocery store or the pharmacy.

I guess they think the panic level isn’t high enough.

Privately, Republicans admit that the $77.9 million system that is now failing Florida workers is doing exactly what Scott designed it to do — lower the state’s reported number of jobless claims after the great recession.

It’s a sh-- sandwich, and it was designed that way by Scott,” said one DeSantis advisor. “It wasn’t about saving money. It was about making it harder for people to get benefits or keep benefits so that the unemployment numbers were low to give the governor something to brag about.”

Republican Party of Florida chairman Joe Gruterswas more succinct: “$77 million? Someone should go to jail over that.”

With hundreds of thousands of Floridians out of work, the state’s overwhelmed system is making it nearly impossible for many people to even get in line for benefits.

After a record number of claims were reported Thursday, DeSantis said the state would resort to paper applications, build a mobile app to handle the flood of traffic and deploy hundreds, even thousands, of state workers to provide stopgap help.
Maybe Jared can design the app???!!!

I admit I gained a couple pounds too, despite exercising about the same
Also, there is more trash in the trashcan (its much heavier to roll out)
We run the dishwasher much more often
Electrical bill will be up, but gasolene will offset somewhat (+ less cost of TP, of course!)

My weight is holding steady thanks to plenty of time on this sweet machine.

Wife and kids are home, so our porn consumption is steady at zero. (Despite Deez' contention, we are really pretty damned vanilla.)

Alcohol consumption is probably up a bit, but not much. Weed consumption, like porn, is steady at zero.

Gaming, yeah, up thanks to the kids.

Making a point to not eat more but I will admit it's difficult, again because with two college age kids at home, snack food is more prevalent than when it's just the wife and I.

Glad to see Fox News feels the colloquialism "weed" is appropriate there. :whiteflag:

Wait, two college age kids and weed and porn consumption are at zero?

I think someone is dreaming.
