Considering aggy

I have been a longhorn fan since I was 7 years old (1996 season). I remember watching us beat Neb and my life was never the same. During high school my friends would make jokes about how obsessed I was with UT, and how I knew every players name, where they went to high school and things like that.

Well I didn't have the grades to get into UT so I went to UT-Arlington (some of my friends ended up going to UT, and a lot went to A&M). Now I am trying to transfer into UT, (I am not in the CAP program) but I am not sure I have the grades to get in. So I am also applying to A&M.

I decided that If I don't get into UT that I will go to A&M. A&M is closer to home (Houston), it is a better school than UT-Arlington, and a lot of my friends go there. Of course I will still wear burnt orange, attend UT games and make fun of aggys, but I will go to school there.

Thoughts?

Depends on you major and what career you want to pursue after graduation. UT-ARLINGTON has some very good majors. I am not sure I could go to a&m unless I wanted to be a vet. Let's just hope you get accepted at UT. Good luck, either way.

Why didn't you apply to UT? For those who don't get in, as TX residents, you would've been guaranteed admission once you'd satisfactorily completed the CAP program. The CAP program is offered to any kid who is denied admission. Surely you knew this, right? Besides, unless consideration for transfer students is different, Fall 2008 admission is now closed.

Go to one of the UT schools, or UH or Texas State or somewhere other than aggy and then transfer to UT for your sophomore year. It's easier to transfer into UT than it is to get in as a freshman.

Being completely honest, aggy IS a better school academically than uh, baylor, texas state, etc. I think it would be in his best interest academically to go to a&m if he can't get into UT. However, he should also weigh in the fact that he will be living in college station for 2-3 years. Bleh.

I'm in my office looking at the diploma on my wall right now. Imagine yourself doing that in 10 years and it saying A&M on it. Enough said.

For many fields, Geography being perhaps the most outstanding example, you bet your *** people should select Texas State over aggy.

Texan is right. What do you do when someone asks, "Where did you go to school?" You want to be able to proudly say, "The University of Texas." If you go to A&M, you'll have to mumble something incoherently and change the subject.

You can get a good education at a lot of schools besides aggy. Don't sell yourself short. Why suffer for three or four years in a metropolitan outhouse basement.
Go to Texas State, UT-Arlington. or Wofford.
What do you intend to major in? That might make a difference.

Dear God! At some point you might want to consider actually making the grade. If you can't make the grade coming out of high school, and fail to do so again at UTArlington, think about staying put. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad you are considering my school, but come on not everyone gets to be a Jones.

Okay. Let's be serious here for a second.

You should try your hardest to get into UT--it's superior to aggy in almost every academic area. Where you go to school does matter, especially for your first job. The better the reputation of your school, the easier time you'll have setting up a good career.

The same reasoning applies to A&M. There is a gulf of difference between aggy undergrad and the rest of the schools in Texas--UH, Baylor, Texas State, Texas Tech, Sam Houston, etc. The only other school that you should consider should be SMU, if you can afford it. From what I've seen SMU places pretty well on Wall Street at least, most of the banks seem to have a kid or two from SMU in each entering class. This is nowhere near UT of course but is better than pretty much every other school in the state except perhaps A&M and Rice. I can only assume (could be wrong) that SMU is equally respected in other fields.

As much as some of you may hate to admit it, aggy is actually a pretty good school. After UT and Rice, it is probably the next best university for 1000 miles in any direction. Granted, you will have to put up with a lot of retarded **** while you are there, but you need to think about your future and what is going to set you up the best in the long run. Texas State's female-male ratio is attractive but ultimately, that is not going to matter one whit 20 years in the future. A&M's (admittedly overrated) alumni network actually might.

Some food for thought from the US News rankings:

#17 Rice
#44 UT-Austin
#62 Texas A&M
#67 SMU
#75 Baylor
#79 UC-Boulder
#85 Iowa State
#85 Kansas
#91 Mizzou
#91 Nebraska
#91 Tulsa
#108 TCU
#108 OU
#124 arky
#124 Kansas State

Note that U of H, UT-Arlington and Texas State don't even crack the top 125.

Rankings aren't everything, but they do matter to a lot of people, especially recruiters. Don't let school bias get in the way of making the best decision for your long-term life and career goals.

For graduate schools (not directly relevant to you but still enhances the overall reputation of the university):

MBA
UT #18, aggy #29, Rice #48
(the other schools don't even make the list of the top 50)

Engineering (masters/PhD)
UT #11, aggy #14, Rice #30, Iowa State #45

Education
UT #14, Kansas #20, aggy #34, #38 UC-Boulder, #40 OU

Public Policy
US News only seems to rank the top 3, but I know that we are generally considered to be a Top 10 school. I have no idea where aggy is ranked, but considering they have a lot of CIA and former Bush guys I am sure they have a strong reputation in the field. The only other school in the same league would be the James Baker school at Rice.

Again, the general trend here is that there is a huge difference academically between A&M and the remaining schools in Texas. In several cases aggy is actually ahead of Rice.

Here's the thing. If you actually GO to aggy, you need to become aggy. You can be aggy without being aggy but still be aggy and then we won't make fun of your aggyness except when you're being really, really aggy. Join the Peace Corps for a couple years and then try The University again.

Some people were born to just be fans and not students. At some point you just have to buck up and take that job at the taco shack.

Have you considered getting your Bachelor's where you are and then going to grad school at Texas? Or going for a second Bachelor's at Texas?

Don't listen to people making disparaging remarks. Some of them likely didn't go to Texas either.

That UT-Nebraska game seems like yesterday. It completely freaks me out that kids born in 1990 or so are now college-age.

That's just wrong.

They have no memory of Reagan, or even Bush Sr. They missed the 1st shuttle explosion, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the cold war, missed the "good" Star Wars movies, and have lived with the internet and cell phones for most of their lives. He won't ever register using TEX, or do manual adds and drops at the Erwin Center.

<End angry old man rant mode.>

Poster, I am pretty sure he got my opinion. ******* or not, I made the grade and NEVER had to consider whether becoming aggy was a possibility. This whole thread reminds me of the poster my high chool counselor had of the cat hanging from the tree branch. It's cute and kinda amusing, but not worth a whole lot.

If you get denied at UT, they will offer you a chance to go to UTSA, UT Tyler, etc., with the ability to transfer to UT automatically with a 3.2 GPA. That is not as hard to do at those schools, and is a lower standard than UT requires to even be considered for other transfers. If you want to go to UT, then go work hard at an easier school for a year and transfer to UT.
