CONCACAF Gold Cup

TexanWolv,

You're right that was uncalled for, however In my opinion Beckerman has been very good in the first two games. He also helped settle the team down in the first few minutes after he came on tonight. I just don't see how you can say he sucked.

Can anyone figure out Bradley's strategy of playing a 2-4-2 formation with no goalie?

That doesn't strike me as a way to win most games.

The game was played on delay down here so I had read your comments before seeing it. Not a pretty performance. Since most have already commented on performance let me get on my soapbox about something else.

One thing that must come to an end is MNT games on turf. Watching them play on the road at Sarprissa is painful enough once every four years we shouldnt have to watch them on turf in the US when there are plenty of grass stadiums. Watching the ball skid along last night just didnt feel natural and is not acceptable. Last week in Seattle was one too many but twice in one week in two different stadiums shouldnt happen.

NO MORE TURF GAMES for the US MNT!!!!!!!!!!

So, Mexico wraps up Gold Cup pool play by blanking Guadeloupe, 2-0.

Quarterfinal pairings are now set:

Canada vs. Honduras
U.S. vs. Panama
Mexico vs. Haiti
Costa Rica vs. Guadeloupe

(Excuse any inaccuracies; I typed that from memory after the broadcast.)

I'm guessing the U.S.-Panama winner advances to face the Canada-Honduras winner. Same for Mexico-Haiti and Costa Rica-Guadeloupe.

What a sad, sad tournament ...

I am ready to see the quarterfinals next weekend but I was really hoping that the US would play their quarter in Dallas. Obviously that would have meant that they finished in a lower slot, but that would have been fun to attend a game a little closer to home.

I am assuming that Bradley plays a stronger lineup now with the players that were added to the roster when we got the move to 30. I was trying to find the additions to the roster and couldn't locate them. I know Feilhaber was one and I believe M Bradley was added so that he could serve his suspension.

Beckerman has improved a lot since his move to Salt Lake. I agree that he tends to hold the ball, however he compensates with a very quick release. He has that little hitch that freezes the defender and then gets the pass away on the half step.

I hope he gets an opportunity to play against better quality teams just to see if he can be successful. The reality of course is that he has little chance of breaking into the 2010 WC roster no matter how well be performs. DM is the deepest position in the pool.

GemStateJim,
huh? Why is this tournament sad?

Also, there are no games scheduled to be played in Dallas, so I have NO idea what you are talking about there man.

July 18 in Philadelphia:
Canada vs. Honduras
U.S. vs. Panama

July 19 in Arlington at Cowboys Stadium:
Mexico vs. Haiti
Costa Rica vs. Guadeloupe

Sorry GemStateJim,
I notice now that it really was in regards to Nap's comment about the matches in Arlington. You are correct in that not only was I not clear, I was just wrong in who stated that.

Also, for the record, Arlington is not a suburb of Dallas. If you want to call it a suburb of Ft. Worth, fine. If you want to say the matches are in Ft. Worth fine. That doesn't bother most of us from Arlington. I am actually from Pantego, not even Arlington. Tarrant Co. is Tarrant Co. For those who are from there, we do not like to be wrapped up on the incompetently run douchery of a city known as Dallas.

How about "The Metroplex"?

That's the biggest hick name ever invented for an urban area.

DFW Airport isn't in Dallas either. Or even Dallas County for that matter, yet people always say that they have a layover in DALLAS.

I used to give a **** when people would say that they are from Dallas when they were from Richardson or Plano. (I was born and raised in Dallas, DALLAS. DALLAS. Not the suburbs, not the next county over...) But really, I couldn't care less when someone from the Inland Empire says that they're from "LA" or that someone from Overland Park says that they are from Kansas City.

With the exception of the TX/OU game, Arlington is as Dallas as any big time large field sports are going to get to being played IN Dallas.

If it were up to me, I would play it every four years and rotate the host countries. There is no reason why El Salvador, Guatemala, Costa Rica, or Honduras can't host the tournament. I know, I know, the stadiums blah blah blah. The copa america has no problem playing in decrepit venues.

concacaf has the gold cup every two years to generate $$$, and nothing more. And I am guessing most of that goes to the bloated salaries of Warner and Blazer.

I heart threads like these, you guys who contribute and make great reading/learning and the fact that the off season for American Football is enjoyable since we are passionate about other sports like this.

So thanks hombres, for all you contribute and help make the summers more than tolerable.

Who is in the potential lineup for the Panama game tonight? I believe Parkhurst, Cherundolo, and Davies have all returned to their club teams and I think I remember hearing that Bradley is not going to call in Altidore or a few others until the semis (assuming they qualify). Does anyone else know of others who may have also left for their club duties?

Nice touch by panama attacking the refs after the game. I thought he called a game that was a little more in favor of Panama, and how can you argue the penalty kick? Either way, nice to see our young boys move on to the semifinals.
As a side note, do you ever think we will see an American referee officiate a Mexico game in Mexico... or anywhere?
