Colt McCoy's Numbers Thru 2 Games ...

Chiles does need some real reps to get ready, but those reps don't necessarily need to come when the game is on the line.

If Mack would let him throw the ball when he comes in for mop up duty, we would be much better off. But, Mack is too concerned about the perception that he is running up the score, so it is hand off left and hand off right until the clock hits zero.

I don't think that fans asking for the development of Chiles are out of line, especially given his skill set. If he could get comfortable in the passing game, we could do a lot of interesting stuff with this Q package.

Alas, I am of the belief that the Q package was desinged to placate both Chiles and the fan base. I don't expect a meaningful play to come from it all year.

For the record, I think Chiles should get more reps if Colt is going to continue to run around so much out there. If he's going to keep leaving the pocket, we need our backup ready to play. Colt's running ability can be a benefit, but it ups the injury risk quite a bit.

Are you seriouly suggesting that because the starter has good stats, we do not need a well-prepared backup?
That is nuts. Somebody has to be ready when OU or Arkansas twists our qb's ankle in a pileup, or when one of our own starters falls awkwardly onto the back of his leg. It happens.

Right now, I would take McCoy over Stafford and Sanchez, and maybe Tebow. I'm sure you'd argue about taking McCoy over Tebow, but you're the one who said RIGHT NOW, not last year or the year before, is what matters. Last year, I'd easily take Tebow over McCoy, but this isn't last year.

accurate, i gotta go with how pete answered your question.

i don't think anyone ever complained that chance wasn't getting enough playing time when Vince was out there

i seem to remember him coming right into the tech game and leading us to a victory. of course, he had a some ok recievers too.

and to whoever said it, yes florida did the split qb.. but lsu didn't. i think flynn was filling in for an injured qb. then the other guy came back and started. when he'd suck, flynn would go in. when flynn sucked, the other dude would go in.

if colt was to start the arkie game 1 for 9 with an int or two or three... then you bet your *** chiles would be thrown into the game.

the job is for colt to lose based off the way he has been playing.

true... i immediately regret typing the irrevelant information.

I would be curious to know how many reps the back up QB's took total for the top ten teams this last weekend.. Were not the only team not running out 2nd team Qb out on the field..

Kansas State two years ago is enough reason for me to want to see the backup QB with a lot of PT.

the fact that i have a sporting interest in the spread is reason for me to want colt to stay in.

Matt Nordgren got all kinds of playing time in 05. Anyone want to take bets on how the rose bowl turns out had VY gone down in that game and Nordgren come in?

even with a healthy Colt, we're not going anywhere this year. and by anywhere, i mean the Big 12 title game or a BCS bowl. so if Colt does go down, then Chiles can get his experience.

next year is the next good chance at winning some meaningful hardware.

I'll be really surprised if Bradford struggles at all behind his All-American o-line. Next year when they've all graduated however, might be a different story.

I think it is a mistake on several fronts to not play at least the primary backup qb, as well as those near starting status at other positions. Witness: players transferring who do not get a shot at any meaningful playing time. Witness: 1977 OU game, two Texas qbs out for the season in the first half.
Even if the starter has a great season and is made of rubber and kryptonite, he might decide to go pro and leave you with no experience at the position.
There's also the chance of injury when your team is 28 points ahead in the 3rd quarter and the other team is getting angry about it.

Ive said it before Nordgren beats USC without a problem. In fact to get experience he should have come in the 2nd Q against Ohio State. Also Mark Sanchez is like Notre Dame. He has achieved nothing yet some crazy people think he is the best. As for McCoy, is breaking almost every school passing record an achievement? Apparently not. Lastly, do not start thinking like that Davis guy. Games are not practice. Rant complete.

Incidentally, USC is up on tOSU by 32 points with 6 minutes to go, and backup QB Aaron Corp just threw a couple of short passes.

Barton,
For those who think Chiles deserves PT in the 1st Qtr "just to get meaningful snaps", I agree that chiles is not deserving. At 28-13, McCoy should be getting all the snaps save a trick-play. I think that the majority of the fanbase would simply like to see chiles throwing passes even when he's in for mop-up duty. Also, sometimes "mop-up duty" can even be in the 1st half. If we're up 28-0 over a weak team early, I see no reason not to let the backup play, but keep passing, especially if he has no experience.

As most of stated, we'd hate to rolling along for a great season & lose our starter to injury or DWI and destroy our season.

All n all, it appears that in some of our non-conference games, we have the luxury of developing a back-up but aren't using that gift. I doubt anyone thinks Chiles should be getting more PT than Colt, at least as a QB.
