Colt McCoy's Numbers Thru 2 Games ...

QB Efficiency of 158.23 (10th in NCAA)
44-58, 76% completion rate (9th in NCAA)
7 TD's (4th in NCAA) and 1 INT
504 passing yds (26th in NCAA)

Still the leading rusher on our team with 116 yards, 6.5 average, and 1 rushing TD ...

Tell me again why anyone should be concerned about if our backup QB gets meaningful snaps, or looks happy on the field when he does get to play?

I simply don't get it. Colt is looking as good as I've seen him, all that is I'm hearing on the radio shows and message boards is the perceived injustice being served to #7.

Since when is the back-up QB entitled to playing time when the 3rd year returning starter is red hot? People can focus on this, I'm done. I'm gonna sit back and watch McCoy toss another 3/4 TD's against Arkansas.

I'll tell you why, because it's more important to get the backups as close to the starters as possible, this for all the following reasons.

1. If someone goes down at any position, you don't loose much at that position and it hopefully won't cost you the game. (can't loose once in today's seasons)
2. It is certinly more important to have a well rounded top to bottom team rather than having one dude reaching for some school record, and/or worrying about having your coaches name/program run through the dirt for running up the score.
3. It certinly also helps recruiting as well, and it's much better than wasting game experience and time running the fullback up the middle so nobody's feelings get hurt.

We also don't use our early season non-confrence schedule nearly as wisely as we should, we are not ready for the RRS, and usually aren't by the time the game gets here.

You are wrong.

It is way important to be concerned with the temperment of a back-up QB, and to make sure he sees at least as much playing time as the starter, and really, more than the starter, because hey, he's just one play away from being the starter, which is why the 3rd string QB should see more playing time than #1 and #2 combined.

Colt is playing well, but there is reason to be concerned with backup playing time since Colt has gotten hurt each of the last two years.

It's always a good idea to have a good backup, ask the Patriots.

Just because it's Arkansas week, and some here don't seem to grasp that Arkansas has a problem with D and not O, here are Dicks in comparison.....QB efficiency:McCoy 158.23Dick 149.39

Completions:
McCoy
44-58, 76% completion rate
Dick
47-75, 62.7% completion rate

TD's, Int's:
McCoy
7 TD's, 1 Int
Dick
6 TD's, 1 Int

Passing Yards:
McCoy
504
Dick
641

Not too much much of a difference.

Kansas State two years ago is enough reason for me to want to see the backup QB with a lot of PT.

A violent game, that's really your argument?

So essentially every team should jog out their backup QB for a quarter in every game "just in case" the starter goes down?

Guess I'll yell for Brad Johnson in the Dallas/Philly game next Monday too ... just in case.

The UTEP game was 28-13 in the 3rd quarter. It's not like we kept Colt in when the score was 66-7.

How many meaningful minutes does the back up at USC, OU, Florida, Georgia get? Are their backups playing during meaningful possessions in the middle of the first, second, or third quarters?

I'm not trying to argue one way or another here, this is just an honest question. How much time do these other successful programs give their backups?

The fact that last year when he got knocked out of the kst game and then played like *** in the tamu game should have you eating crow.

Have you already forgotten?

McCoy is not invinceable, even Vince got hurt sometimes.

OU backup saw ZERO passes in a 26 pt win in Norman over Cincy.

UGA backup saw 5 attempts in the 39 pt win in Athens.

Bama backup saw ZERO passes in a 14 pt win over powerful Tulane.

Pete Carroll let the USC backup throw TWO passes in the 45 pt romp over UVA.

Tressell let Prior throw 6 passes in the 43-0 win over Youngstown.

Paterno's backup threw 8 times in a 66-10 win over CCU.

Mack is par for the course, yet everyone is up in arms.

gotta agree with BH. i'd like to see more playing time for Chiles, but nobody here can name one other big time program that currently and actively splits the QB position. the backup generally comes in for mop-up duty. depending on the lead late into the third quarter or in the fourth quarter, will we see that back-up get some playing time.

chiles went in at the appropriate time to relieve colt. because the score wasn't too silly, chiles should've had better plays to run.

i'd like to see this ghostly 'q' package more often to help get chiles some playing time. can't let such a talented player go to waste.

Chiles needs to see time as a receiver or running back, not QB. Harris should be the backup w/ Chiles the emergency QB. From what I can tell and saw last spring, Harris is about as good a runner as Chiles and 10xs the passer.

A number of the mentioned backup QBs at other schools have much more experience than Chiles. For example, USC's backup, Mitch Mustain, has a whole season of experience throwing the ball. Joey Halzle at OU has thrown around 70 passes over 2+ years. Again, Chiles has thrown only 14 passes, and only 5 completions.
