Hmmmmmmm. So they’re probably going with Bednar, huh... The “animal.”
113 SO. 20 walks. Throws up to 97mph. Good breaking ball.

Warm up the bats Horns. Let’s light him up!

I just hope we win our second game then.

Sorry, I don't remember Steve Labay starting the game, but I do remember him twisting their hitting star into the ground when he threw the "LaLob" for a third strike, then going back to the outfield.

I don't remember Cookie ever starting any game in Omaha, just remember telling Randy Hendricks to call Skoal and get him an endorsement after the Jim Katt (??) remarks, "Cook has called time out and is going over toward the Texas dugout. Looks like he's going to change bats as he calls the batboy out." Katt was left speechless as Cookie reached in his hip pocket, pulled out a can of Skoal, took a dip, strolled back to the plate and stroked a base clearing double to give us the lead.

There’s some pretty evenly matched teams in the CWS.

I don’t think any scrubs slipped in.

Possessing one of the best rotations in the SEC, Mississippi State baseball looks like an Omaha team

Why Mississippi State baseball needs more from starting pitchers

MSU'S STARTER WILL LIKELY BE:

Christian MacLeod
6'4" 227
4.24 ERA
6-5 reord
113 SO
29 Walks

"He [MacLeod] doesn't have the overwhelming velocity of some of the other arms on the staff..." Throws 89-92 and up to 93-94. Good curve ball. Possible early rounder in draft.

Christian MacLeod

OR IT WILL BE:

Will Bednar
3.53 ERA

7-1 record
113 SO
20 Walks

"Bednar's an animal..." Throws mid 90s, hits 97 mph when he's on. With good control. Has a good breaking ball.

Will Bednar

Or

Eric Cerantola - a 6'5" Canadian who throws 98 mph and has a "hammer curveball" with (allegedly) a spin rate of 3300 rpm (yeah, right…). Some control issues. "He may hit the backstop but ..."

Relievers:

Landon Sims
6'2" 216
10 saves
1.55 ERA
85 SO
14 walks

Hits 98 mph with his fastball on a good day with a hard breaking/late breaking mid-80s slider and a curve.
"His fastball is a nasty pitch with ride and late cut."
Middle relief workhorse
At least one commentator thinks Landon Sims is the best pitcher on the staff.

Landon Sims
We're likely to see this reliever

Houston Harding
2.87 ERA
59 SO
17 walks
Lefty
Change up and off-speed trickster

Parker Stinnett
1.56 ERA
30 SO
13 walks
Stinnett, a JC transfer, is "a dogged competitor" and aggressive with put-away stuff. Uses a wicked slider to get SOs.

Brandon Smith
4.29 ERA
39 SO
10 walks
Recovered from Tommy John surgery last year.
Now throws in the Lo 90s or higher.

Preston Johnson
4.44 ERA
38 SO
11 walks

Chase Patrick
2.13 ERA
9 SO
5 walks
A sidewinder delivery

Dylan Carmouche
6'5"
1.23 ERA
11 SO
3 walks
Low 90s, good movement on his fastball, tricky changeup, and a decent curve ball.
But, "a bit erratic."

Stone Stimmons
6'3" 220
transfer from Furman
Throws low 90s with a decent slider in the low 80s.
Changup sinker is tricky pitch.

Yeah, these guys can throw. And they can throw hard. Warm up the bats, cuz ice cold hitting won't get it done.
Yep, Bednar’s an animal…

Texas ran into buzz saw and in spite of an outstanding pitching performance by Madden and Hansen, the Horns will have to play out of the losers bracket. Bracket two has Texas playing Tennessee Tuesday afternoon in an elimination game and UVA playing Mississippi State in the winners bracket Tuesday night.

N.C. State slips past Vandy 1-0 thanks to a solo home run in the 5th. The Wolfpack had 15 strikeouts over 8.5 innings - were they thinking they could break our record? :smile1:

There has been some phenomenal pitching at the CWS thus far. The two teams I thought would be in the final, Texas and Vanderbilt are going to have to come out of the losers bracket, Texas will have to do it with 4 elimination games, Vandy with three.

I was wondering about this stat, and Kirk Bohls gave me the answer:
...an even dozen teams have dropped their openers and still won the CWS, including Texas as far back as 1950 after losing to Rutgers. Oregon State has pulled it off twice, most recently in 2018, but it’s difficult. Only three teams have done it since 1998. There are no sure things in Omaha, but 35 of the last 39 national champs won their first game.
Bohls: Longhorns swing and miss

Horns win 8-4 to advance in the losers bracket and Thursday they will get the loser of tonight's MSU-UVA game.

Horns will likely start Hansen Thursday even with his two innings of work Sunday as he didn't throw many pitches and that may well have been his throwing day anyway. Texas will have fully rested Quintanilla, Gordon and Nixon in the pen. I will say it again, if there is a team in Omaha with the pitching depth to come out of the losers bracket it is this Texas team, its all about the bats.

Well said, FWHORN. The key lies in scoring to give the pitching some good run support. I wish the Horns were not in the loser's bracket, but it's what it is.

Miss St had no hits and no runs thru 7.

They have scored 6 so far in the 8th and still batting,

Score 6-4 Miss St

UVA absolutely dominates for seven innings but their pitching just comes apart in the 8th and chokes away a four run lead. MSU wins and has the two to win one slot for bracket two. The Horns will face UVA in an elimination game Thursday night with winner having to beat the Bulldogs twice to advance.
